Mizuno pro 221 vs mp20

Recommended Posts

Had the pro 221 since summer. Love everything about them. Built a short set of mp20, mainly to get a little experience at building, but also for a backup/range set. 221 have LZ 6.0 but couldn’t afford those shafts, so put in dg s300 on the cheap. SS them 1x.  I know shafts are different but have been blown away by the mp20. I think I may turn them into my gamers. Is this a case of the latest isn’t always the greatest? Or has anyone else found the mp20 to be superior?

Question. Is it the 1xSS that has made the difference vs LZ6.0? Or is Dgs300 really your preferred shaft and your just finding out?. Is Impact/Feel so much better on 20? It should be not as good as 221 @impact.

Or. Is it just that the built set are eg spine alighned shafts, d3 vs d1? Custom Built set Should be better than std of same set.

Certainly could be the build. I’ve heard mizuno isn’t great at QC. But I was just trying to get the DG s300 shafts together without heads flying off. So far so good! I did grow up on s300 but was fit into the LZ. Can shaft make that much difference in feel to the clubhead?

The MP20 was better for me. Mizuno started shrinking down the MB with the 221. Apparently the 241 is even smaller. They also raised the CG with the 221 due to feedback from Keith Mitchell. In a vacuum, this will lower the flight and increase the spin. If you hit a low ball with a lot of spin, like me, you may prefer the MP20 like I did. Had my set with MMC at 4,5. Flawless combo. Wish I would of never got rid of them.

The MMC is the real sleeper though. Mizuno is low bounce and the MMC came with stock 32 loft on a 7i. Bent them weak and the things feel as good as a blade but are dead straight. I had the MB but prefer the MMC. Fired 68 with my set in 42 degrees yesterday. They’re long and arrow straight. Love them. I think the MP20 was the best range they’ve ever made.

Totally agree with you on the MP20 MB and MMC. Could of played a full set of MMC's no problem. Big improvement over the MP18 MB,SC,MMC. Really didn't like the HMB though. Big and clunky and didn't combo very well. IMO the 225 was much better than the HMB. I actually thought the MP18 Fli Hi was pretty sweet. Just couldn't make the MP20 HMB work.

I do notice the lower flight with the 221 but don’t have a launch monitor and can’t really tell a difference in spin. I got the 6 iron in mmc to combo with it and it’s lovely. Feels damn good too. Will not be into the 241. Smaller and more spin are not appealing.

Agreed.

I've been playing the 20 MMCs for the last few years.  Great irons and I haven't had any reason to look at the latest offerings.  Feel great, look great and work for me.

Not 100% relevant, but every time I take out my MP-60/67 set for a round, I wonder if they’re going to supplant my JPX 923 Tours. Both are built to the same length/SW specs with the same shafts. But I love the 923T, also. They’re not the same, per se, but if I could only play one iron for the rest of my life, either would do.

Moral of the story, Mizuno makes a great iron. 🤷‍♂️

I've gamed MP20's for 3 years and my golfing buddy has had the 221's for two seasons.  Very minor differences between them.  The 221 does look a tiny bit more compact.  Both feel amazing, and I have similar numbers with both.  I saw zero reason to consider upgrading.  I love my MP20's and will play them until the grooves are gone.

The huge difference I see in your sets is the shafts.  S300s are worlds different from Proj X LZ.  Maybe consider swapping one shaft between the two sets and compare.

I'd also consider taking some impact spray to both sets.  You might be striking the ball at a slightly different location due to the change in shaft or possible swing weight if they aren't identical.

Good idea. Also grew up playing s300 but was fit into the LZ, could be a familiarity thing.

I grew up playing s300 as well. Finally got "fit" and he put me a KBS shaft that never felt right.

Swing what you like and feels the most comfortable regardless of what a fitter might try to put you in.

Have seen some conflicting thoughts on s300 on here in the past. Was hoping LZ would lead to better dispersion but really don’t see it. Turning 42 soon and was buying into the 120 gram is easier to swing later in rounds but I’m pretty fit and not sure how much validity there is to that idea either. I do know that I will never own an iron set again that’s not a mizuno.

Funny..I was around the same age when I was fit and thought (along w the fitter) that a lighter shaft would be better. Like you, I'm pretty fit and just turned 49.

I never got along with the lighter shaft and now I'm shooting about scratch. I've had a few rounds in the 60s this year. Love my 20 MMCs.

I too was fit into px lz 6.0 years ago and immediately sold them. I've been playing dg s300 forever, and can't swing anything else. I now swing the s300 120's, a little lighter, same feel.

Bingo, Keith Mitchell dashed my dreams of the 221 being really playable. He wanted a lower launching butter knife. Mizunos best blade since the mp5 has been the mp20. I think the 241 will be another disappointment, except for a couple tour players who will rotate them in and out of the bag weekly.

Haven’t seen a single mizuno staff player rotating blades in and out of the bag every week. Nonsense. 221 was a nice iron and very playable and I’m sure 241 will be great as well.

The 221 will not have a cult following or be revered like past Mizuno mb's. There was no reason to waste money on them when you can go on eBay and pick up older, more forgiving mb's. Mp5, mp69s etc.., and I'd even say my 14s and 33s are more forgiving then the 221 and the 14s feel every bit as good if not better even with the 221 having copper. I see the 241 being a little bit "better" if they aren't as low launching as the 221 but still not the direction I wish Mizuno would go with their mb's.

I actually don’t mind the lower launch. Not sure if they are lower spinning as advertised..?
