Things that you do golfing that you know don't matter, but you live by them?

 

Different ball marker every round and never from the course that I am playing.

Wear pants if I have a caddy.

Cannot wear a white glove.

Cannot have a second ball in my pocket - it makes my game ball feel insecure.

So would I be correct in saying that if there's no caddy, you go pants-less?

For the record, I'm the opposite with gloves. I hate to wear a glove that's any other colour than (mainly) white. White with a bit of blue is my favourite.

 

And I have no idea why.

A) Glove is always a Mizuno.
B) I don’t take off the glove while putting. 
C)  Divot repair tool is always the same Scotty Cameron even though I have acquired about 40 of various types. 
D) Ball marker, repair tool, and two tees are in the right front pants or shorts pocket.

Happy to say no superstitions for me. I feel those things only have the “power” you allow them to have. I choose to believe it’s nonsense 😊

Nothing red…ever.

Ball marking coin has to be dated from the 70’s.

Par or better putts coin is placed heads up and bogey or worse coin is placed head down, hiding in shame.

When hitting driver I pull up on the right shoulder of my shirt (this one baffles me too but not stopping now)

I can’t be the only one who gravitates towards certain wood head and shaft pairings based on color scheme, right?

 

I’m just not a fan of gaudy pairing. Rory’s Black/Red Stealth with the Ventus TR Blue is the kind of color scheming that would eat away at me if I bagged it. A Callaway Mavrik with an Aldila NV Green? Shoot me. 

 

I tend to gravitate towards Black/Red/Silver/Gray/White. Mostly muted and timeless. Fortunately, there are so many options out there that I can find something that works for me, but I’ve definitely said no in my head to some pairings because of coloring/color scheme.

Only white wooden tees, and I don’t buy them.  If forced to buy them or use something else I immediately start looking for them so that the bought or colored tees do not need to be used.  I also will never use a full tee on a par 3.  If I can’t find a broken one I just Laura Davies it.  Thousands of dollars spent on equipment every year but My dad told me buying tees is stupid so I’m not springing for them…

I won't use anybody else's tees anymore, but not because it is a indiosyncrasy... it is because most of them get sucked on in people's mouths and stuff.

 

I got a bag of the 3/4 inch tees during COVID and I really like those for iron shots.  It feels like a luxury item, but I will use a broken tee too.

Yall all must have been baseball players😂. I thought I was the only one who had golf superstitions. I can’t have my wallet in my pocket while playing and anytime I’m using less than driver on the tee box I find a broken tee to use.

When I used coins to mark my ball before my unhealthy fancy ball marker phase I'm in now, I would always mark the ball heads up, as I won't even pick up a quarter out in the wild if its tails up.

I don't wear a glove when I'm chipping or pitching, but I do for bunker shots. I've no idea what the origins are/were. It's just panned out that way.

 

I also don't use a tee if I'm hitting an iron and do the old Mark Calcavecchia whack-up-the-turf-into-a-little-lump thing when I'm hitting a 3-wood.

I'm happy to say I've given up most...

 

Still:

 

Won't tee off in front of someone making birdie or better on the previous hole. (Unless I did as well)

Always a broken T when not teeing off w/driver. Yes, I'll break and use a new one if I have to.

Always have same Scotty pivot tool (which is 24 years old) in right pocket along with one T. 

 

During winter I keep a ball in my pocket and rotate the balls after each hole. After holing out I put the ball in my pocket. When I reach the T box I reach in my pocket and can tell by feel the temp of the balls which one I used on the previous hole, so I pull out the warm one. 😁

 

Habits:

 

Clean the club I used after every shot before putting back in the bag.

Repair at least one other ball mark on the green besides my own even if I didn't make one.

Never wear a glove.

Confession time:  Even though I am obviously paid by no one, my shoes and shirt cannot be noticeably different brands.

For example if I am wearing Nike shoes I cannot wear a FJ or Adidas shirt.  I will choose a Nike shirt or a shirt with no visible branding.  FJ shoes rules out the Nike and Adidas shirts.  Luckily (for me) I have plenty of choices of shirts or I probably wouldn't even make it to the course!!!!

I think my only stupid habit is tees have to be wooden and natural or stained not white. But at the same time if playing a course and they have free wooden tees and they're white all bets are off.

My only real quirk is I have to have 3 tees in my pocket.

 

I also do the broken tee thing sans driver but that seems fairly common.

 

I try and hit my first shot of a round with a ball that has been used previously but if I need to put a new nugget in play on the first tee it won’t ruin me.

Based on my HS psychology class. I believe the fact that you realize that’s crazy, means you’re not insane.

I've never been particularly superstitious.  I prefer certain things but even those preferences have changed over the years.

 

The only thing I had that might be considered a superstition was more like a pride thing.

 

My first sub-par competitive round came when I was playing high school golf as a sophomore.  I managed to shoot a 68 in a high school regional tournament up in Amarillo at Ross Rogers Municipal.  The weather was pretty ugly and my dad trudged along with my group through it all.  He didn't get to see many of my high school rounds due to his job, but he wasn't going to miss my first regional tournament.  He was so proud of my round and I was seriously pumped up.  I didn't win the tournament but it was my first top 5 finish.  

 

Dad was waiting at my school parking lot when our bus got back to town, still grinning ear to ear.  He handed me a 1968 quarter and told me it should be my new ball mark as it would remind me of that round every time I put it down on the green.  I used that quarter for over 15 years.  It was my ball mark when I shot my lowest ever competitive round of 64.  Unfortunately, I lost that quarter somewhere along the way and started using any quarter I had around at the time.  

 

Years later after my dad passed away, I was going through his desk at home and found a cloth bag with some coins in it. When I dumped them out and looked through them, it was all quarters.  It was all 1960-1971 quarters.  Apparently my dad had collected those quarters just to give to me when I shot a sub-par round.

I always 'print' my balls with a Dog stencil I got from Tin Cup Products. (not an endorsement, but a shout-out)

My usual playing partners will find my ball and say "Thats yer dog!"

I do tend to play found balls in lieu of new ones and I'll play them until they're lost again or really beaten up. It's bad karma to tee up a new ball for no reason. 

 

Also,  lugging around a wet towel is disgusting. Especially if you get it wet using a random puddle 💩or a filthy club cleaning pail. 💀

Same ball marker every time, carried in my left pocket on it's own. 

I try to avoid using number 4 golf balls.
