Vokey 60 degree - low bounce k vs v grind

Recommended Posts

Looking for some help on grinds.  Anybody played both?  Pros and cons of each?

I play on mostly soft and wet to medium firm conditions in the pnw.   My 60 is mostly an around the greens club ( short sides, bunkers, rough) and pitches around 45 yards and in.  I would like to be able to hit a full shot  if needed off the soft turf.

i also have a mg3 tw 56 that’s stays in the bay year round and 60 t grind that gets outs in for baked out conditions.

I have both and keep both in rotation. I favor the LBK in softer scenarios but both work very well. V grind is easier to open up imo but both are workable and both will dig if you square the face. LBK is amazing out of bunkers and definitely better for soft heavy sand. V grind seems to dig the ball out of tough lies a bit better but I am already too steep and don't need any more reasons to go down after it.

I believe V grind will be my summer wedge and LBK for wet winter conditions here in GA.

I also have both and agree with everything above

I just ordered a 58V grind to swap with my 58LBK when conditions require it.  I’ve played both the M and D grinds in the 58 and felt they were too low / high bounce respectively.  I’m hoping the V grind is the one.  I play most often in the Midwest on soft / wet turf early in the morning so the V may get more use…

Any update to this? With the new release of the V it would be great to hear a comparison between all these. I play in similar conditions in the Northeast

Played both but not extensively. K grind isn’t bad but played different than V grind. V grind was too high bounce. Skipped into the ball a bit too frequently. I play it in the spring and if it rains a ton but even then, nothing crazy.
Bottom line: they aren’t super similar. Trial and error is really the only way to get it done.

I have the following 58 degree wedges and vary based on conditions:

V Grind- use this in most normal conditions, awesome in normal Bermuda and zoysia and soft sand

LBK Grind- I use this in Pinehurst/Southern Pines the most, its great on just about any sand and firm turf

M Grind- I’ll carry this in the Midwest and northeast.  It’s great on bent/bluegrass/fescue/poa

I’ve gone to the V grind exclusively and really like it.  Just the right amount of bounce.  I can open it up or play it neutral with no issues.  I don’t hit many full shots with it but when I do it functions well.

I love the V Grind, I’ll use it any way and for any distance within 90 yards.  The bounce is perfect for the majority of conditions that I play.

Had my V out for its first practice today at the short game area at my club. First impressions are great! Hit a variety of shots and feel like for a low spinner back-ish of stance pitch it has the perfect amount of forward bounce, but the relief allows a decent flop shot if needed. Thinking I should have got the leading edge straightening though. Regardless, going in the bag immediately!

Thanks for all the insights!

I recently ordered a low bounce k with leading edge and trailing edge relief.   I play in mostly soft condition with hard packed, wet bunkers most of the year.  Excited to get this on the course

How’d the LBK go for you the last few months? I’m in the Seattle area so I play the same conditions as you. Was thinking V grind was the way to go but the LBK also has my interest.

V grind - is this a brand new grind?  I have a pair of SM9's I got last year and there wasn't a V available for them.  Thanks.

Think it is the same grind as the Mizzy V grind? Pretty equal?

Wedgeworks SM9 58 Low Bounce K

Wedgeworks SM9 58V

Vokey SM8 58M

LBK - lots of camber, low bounce angle, great on tight lies, incredible out of any sand and green side rough.  This gets limited bag time but for courses like Pinehurst #2/4 and Pine Needles/Mid Pines/Southern Pines in the peak summer months, this is an outstanding wedge.

V - High forward bounce, lots of heal, trailing edge and to relief.  This is my go-to for Bermuda, soft to moderate sand, soft bent/bluegrass/poa.  Works great out of the rough.  I use this one at least half of the year.

M - Sole is a great balance between the LBK and V grinds, good camber, lots of heal/toe and slight trailing edge release.  For me, this is good on anything and anywhere.  Great on firm turf and is a great “only” wedge.  I find that it struggles in the conditions that I play in about half of the year so this doesn’t get much bag time.

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Great write up. I actually live in the same town as yourself and would love some feedback.  I have been playing the V Grind since 2017 and find it excels in the soft, Bermuda of the Triangle, while still being able to handle the firm, tight bent grass you can find in the mountains.

I'm debating purchasing a K* wedge mainly for an upcoming trip to Scotland in 2026.  My understanding is the K* is a LBK with heel, toe, and trailing edge relief and a preworn leading edge. I would have never thought to take a K* Grind over my V Grind to Pinehurst until I read your post.  By any chance, have you happened to try the K* as well since it is so similar to your LBK?

The k* is the 🐐

Tested a friends on golf trip recently. It’s just like my lbk but better turf interaction on tight thin lies. The heel relief in particular helps with this. Also helps in thick spots. Nippy 30-40 yarders also much easier with how much tighter it sits with the preworn leading edge.

if my lbk wasn’t spinning 11.8-12k on Trackman and I didn’t hit it great on a trip I’d have auto ordered k* already.  But plan to soon just in case they take it off Wedgeworks..it’s that good

I really have considered the K* because the pre-worn leading edge would give a little help with the turf interaction.  I always find myself opening the LBK a tad to show a tad more bounce so I can thump the wedge through the turf and clip the ball around the 4-5 groove for a tad more spin.  The V grind is great in the Sandhills, but dry firm and fast the LBK is a better bet for me.  Another huge plus with the LBK is that it is perfect for the Sandhills bunker sand, almost like cheating.

Your comments, in addition to a ton of help from @knudson81, led me to ordering a custom K* this evening.  Once it's here, if you ever want to try it feel free to shoot me a message and we can play a round.

I’m also in the triangle. I’ve been going back and forth on the V, K* and A+. Did either of you consider the A+?  Looking for something to tackle the Bermuda around here. Recently lived out west and gamed an L, which digs too much in soft bermuda here. I play D in 56, which I save for tall stuff and long bunker shots, so want to maintain some contrast in my 60. Also comfortable hitting 56 on short fluffy bunker shots, so the use case for new 60 is short/tight, soft, fairway, and green side bermuda. Everything I read on A+ makes it sound like a weapon in bermuda but curious on your thoughts. Trying to avoid buying all three haha

The A+ would be a $300 shovel if it ended up in my golf bag, way too low bounce for me in Bermuda.

I briefly looked at all the low bounce Wedge Works grind options when I was deciding on which to try but quickly ruled out the A and A+ grind.  The way I understood it, the A grind was created by Aaron Dill working with Adam Scott to develop a wedge suited for firm, fast links courses that you'd find in Australia (think Royal Melbourne). Which, I don't really think is the same as the tightly mown Bermuda we might experience in Pinehurst.

I have heard the A+ described as a smoothed out M grind with the ribbon removed. I used to play the M grind for years and had issues with it digging too much around the green. In theory, I would need an M grind with more bounce, not less which led me to look into other options.

Back in 2017 I was fortunate enough to be fit at Manchester Lane for the 917 driver, fairway woods, 716 irons, and Vokey wedges.  I shared my concerns with my fitter and she recommended I try the V grind. I've since owned the SM9 & SM10 versions and found it to be the perfect grind for the soft, Bermuda grass we play in the triangle.  I also have not had an issue playing off of the tightly mown bent grass fairways that you can find at private clubs in the mountains. So far, and having not yet tried the K*, I would consider the V grind to be the perfect grind for our area.

Hope that helps!

Super helpful, thank you!  I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts after you’ve tested the K* comparing to the V. Happy to have you out to where we have a pretty solid Bermuda shortgame practice area or to play a round. Feel free to message me directly.

Update

I decided to place an order after reading this thread and hearing other members experience with the K* grind.

WedgeWorks informed me that the K* head was backordered until May 12th and I would likely have it in hand around May 19th.  To my surprise, it shipped on May 1st and I had it in hand by May 6th.

I have been super busy and haven't gotten around to practice with it yet. In the meantime, I went outside and took some pictures on my DSLR.

Any update on K* testing?  I'm sold on the V grind but very intrigued by the K* like you were.
