Cobra King Tour vs Srixon zx7

RickAstley

Recommended Posts

Just had my first iron fitting experience and I had the time of my life. Current irons are over a decade old, Nike VR pro combo with rifle 6.5.

fitting results were King Tour w/ $-taper 120 or zx7 w/ rifle 6.0, very slight edge to king tour on stats and both felt like butter. Tough choice ahead. The other thing I need to figure out is top of bag. Currently have a 3 iron and 5 wood. Do I get another 3 iron or go hybrid route?

How did you guys ultimately decide direction after a fitting? I’m loving having a clear direction with 2 clubs that I loved the feel and results of. Feel like I can’t go wrong either way

Probably my two favorite irons this year. The srixons were more forgiving. At least to me they were.

When it comes to a hybrid, wood, or driving iron, it really depends what you want for flight and what you prefer in look.

WITB

Driver 8: Titleist GT2 - Tensei 1k Pro White 6x

Mini Driver 13.5: Taylormade Burner - Tensei 1k Pro White 7x

2 iron: Titleist T250u - Graphite Design DI 105x

Irons: Ping 240 4-PW - KBS Tour V 120X

Wedges: SM10 50, 55, 60 - Dynamic Gold TI S400

Putter: Lab DF3 w/ TPT shaft

Balls: Titleist ProV1

I’m think I’m leaning Cobras. All the reviews are really positive and the mishits felt a touch better.

I think I’d lean more toward a hybrid than iron. I’ve never hit a hybrid, but the reviews seem good and I don’t hit my 3i a lot as is. plus dropping the 3 saves me $200 haha.

only thing I dislike about cobra is a 44* PW… that’s insane to me. Current set is 47*

Have you hit the 44 pw to compare distance to the 47 you currently use?  My experience with the tours was ball speed increased due to the decreased loft, but so did height and spin.  It was a wash distance wise compared to some of the weaker lofted sets I played.

Would you guys take the specs and try to find it used and adjust from there, or do you think at this point it’s worth just getting brand new and built to spec by a pro? I’ve had my last set for over a decade and would anticipate the same here (sorry not a huge club ho 😂).. I’m probably the cheapest person I know and that full new cost has me anxious

Honestly they’re both pretty good. But in my experience the cobras will give you a more high boring flight, the zx7s launch a little lower and are lower spin from everything I’ve seen.

the zx7 wins on the feel no doubt, there’s really nothing that comes close to the zx7 in feel, for the Category of iron it is. I’ve tried to find it in other irons but i can’t. The mim tours from a couple years ago had great performance but the feel was probly one of the worst feeling ever felt. The new tours are a lot better but still nothing like zx7

Yeah definitely try to find them used and in mint shape. If you look hard enough you’ll find em lol, I’m very cheap myself when it comes to golf because these prices are ridiculous. You can find basically demo condition clubs online for almost half the price most of the time

spare yourself by going the miserly route. by the clubs you want, the way you want, the first time. spend the money. and what are the odds you'll find a "used" set the exact way you are hoping for? and BTW, the pro doesn't build them, COBRA or SRiXON does. they are under warranty and perfect. and confirm the "return policy" with the outfit you are buying from. if you purchase one custom set and are displeased with them, the industry standard is you get to return them and try another set instead. good luck amigo, enjoy your new irons! 👍

would it be better to just buy directly from the manufacturer then? Looks like Srixon website says free Arcos tags with purchase.. that’s intriguing

Unfortunately my fitting was indoor so the feel between the two was nearly identical. I’ve read, and heard from a friend who has them, that club to turf the zx7 is clear winner

yea, you can pop the "Arcos" tags off throw them in the trash. BTW the pricing is the same no matter where you buy them. FWIW when special ordering from SRiXON they have no "upcharge" on the shaft or grip of your choice.

Yeah it is the winner for sure. My only wish is the zx7 was just a little shorter in the blade length, and that it launched a little higher. It would then be the perfect iron lol

The tags aren’t any good at tracking stats?

Neither of these irons are going to give you up or let you down.

That being said, the Srixons are only going to be the clear winner in turf interaction if you are on the steeper side into the ball at impact.  The v-sole is designed to get a steep swing into and out of the turf without digging and getting caught.  If you are steep, they can be miraculous.  If you're on the shallow side and adding loft at impact (you said you hit it plenty high) you may hit more thin shots with the V-sole and especially from tight firm lies.  An item for consideration if you haven't hit them from grass yet.

Remember, you're coming from an iron that has very little bounce, sharp leading edge, and narrow sole.  If you played those well, the design of the Cobra will likely feel less foreign than the Srixons on grass.  Also, adjusting the lofts of the Srixons when gapping your clubs could be problematic if you need to go weaker.  That adds effective bounce, which could exacerbate the issue if you're shallow.

I'm not being negative on the Srixons-  They are amazing for the right person (a digger.) They resist digging better than any club I've ever fit someone into. For a specific type of swing, the design of that club can literally make you a better golfer immediately.  Not true of most clubs.

This is phenomenal commentary, thank you so much. My fitter actually commented that I had a very shallow swing into the ball and told me that’s why I had such high ball flight too. Really cool to hear how the ground interaction and effects of weakening the lofts would go.

below are my fitting stats. Note the Srixon was with a rifle 6.5 shaft and I would need that in 6.0. But they didn’t have that.

I have both of the sets you are looking at. Zx7 mkii with PX 6.0 and King Tour with $ Taper. Bent them both 1-2* weak. Cobras feel and look a little more like I am used to with a more rounded profile and wider sole. Feel is a little softer and spin is a little higher with the Cobra irons. Srixon irons have sharper lines and a different sole design. I find the Srixons to be a little less forgiving and more workable. Really happy with both sets.

I am probably only hitting balls once or twice a week right now, so I would probably benefit from the extra forgiveness and I felt that during the fitting too. Any chance you’re selling one of the sets?? 😁
