Did you put a thinner (but equally long) grip on your Jailbird? How is it?

Still haven't taken my Jailbird MH out on the course yet (the weather and greens are miserable here in PA), but just rolling it indoor, I'm wondering if it'd be perfect with a narrower-than-the-standard-3.0 grip.

I'm interested in who's done what in terms of regripping the Jailbird, and what it has done for your putting. I suppose I'm most interested in hearing from people who have NOT cut the shaft down and added a standard grip -- but if you've done that and feel strongly about the results, then go ahead and post about it.

As much as it hurts to do nothing, I have thought about going down to the 2.0 XL grip. BUT, I won't do anything until after I've given it a true test outdoors, which probably won't happen until May, since the greens are still slow and bumpy through April up in NEPA.

I think I should probably wait, also. Good advice there. Thanks.

In the meantime, I welcome hearing how people have tinkered with the grip and what they like/don't like about it.

If you can get the 3.0 off without butchering it, try out the 2.0 by installing it with an air compressor only. Play swap until one suits you.

Sure. But I don't have an air compressor/the ability to do grip swaps myself, and I'm looking for feedback from folks who have already made a switch.

Roger that.
I had a Tank 7 with a Traxion that’s thinner than the 3.0 XL. There is a weight difference (2.0 is 77g, 3.0 is 100g) that you would need to consider to keep the balance the same. Easily done with the counter-core weight.

Biggest difference I found was the larger diameter is more comfortable with my grip (reverse overlap) than it is with the 2.0. Going further, the 1.0 diameter was even worse. Something in just the way my fingers felt somewhat “jammed”. Pistol grips in general feel better for me, but when going parallel, 3.0 feels best.

I also did my “standard” length with the Tank and it’s a different animal, even with the same swing weight. The counterbalance above your hands makes that thing want to swing on it’s own.

Right now I have a “diet-counter-balanced” set up for lack of better terms. It’s 36” (my usual length is 34”) with the 3.0XL, 15g weights, 576 overall weight and D-8 swingweight.

Many will say “SW doesn’t matter with putters, especially counter-balanced”. I totally disagree. The trick I found is to use the same fulcrum point as if it was my standard length, NOT 14” down the grip. Why? No matter how much longer the shaft is, I’m still holding the putter in the same spot. That way I’m using the same reference point.

Not sure any of that world salad helps you, but good luck. Spring is coming!

Very helpful. Thank you!

I understand that this is all personal preference here, but... Were you used to a thicker grip prior to going to the 3.0? Or did you just quickly realize that you preferred it to a more standard grip?

I’d used the 2.0 plenty and was kind of on the fence with it. The larger pistol grips feel a little better I think mainly because of how I grip the putter. When I got the 3.0XL I thought I’d just give it a try and see. Just wanted more bulk, so to speak. When I go back to the smaller grips, like PP58’s, I feel a tendency to grip too tight. I’m convinced that the larger grips do quiet your hands a bit and I think I’m less likely to be wristy on my take away and especially follow through.

I don’t think there’s a huge difference between the two (2.0 and 3.0), but for me there was “something” that was just a little more comfortable with the 3.0. I wear a Cadet Large glove so my fingers are a little short. It’s literally just a little difference where my index finger overlaps and how my hands feel connected that made me like it. As silly as it seems.

I’ve got at least a dozen grips that I swap around and fiddle with and always learning something.

So in the name of “science” I decided to fiddle with a few putters after supper this evening, kinda thinking about this conversation and some of the nuances. Four different grips in play: PP58, Winn Midsize, SS2.0, and SS3.0. I found that in addition to the “comfort” I seem to get as they are getting larger that I noticed my wrist position changes with each one. Smaller grip diameter, they’re turned more towards each other. Larger they’re further out. Definitely something worth considering. If you don’t have another putter, take a wedge and hold it like a putter. Then take your Jailbird and see the difference. You might find you prefer one over the other and it could be why the 3.0 might feel a little off to you.
