Wouldn't less offset and smaller head be better for an amateur?

Can't add anything to offset/size/sole width argument. But it would be interesting if a survey was taken of the professional golfers (men and women) current on the tour to see what irons they started with as a beginner. I have a feeling it was not 1990 tiny blades. It does come down to practice and how much time any individual can devote. Some more, some less as life gets in the way. Some is natural ability, which goes across all physical activity. I had a neighbor kid who, even on cold MI February days, I would be woken from the thump, thump of a basketball hitting the backboard and then the driveway cement. He made it to sophomore year at a private HS, then stopped. Nature took over and he stopped growing at 5"10" and no matter how much mental motivation, just didn't want to do it anymore,you can't teach height. So he developed his body with weightlifting and is now an online influencer. I keep saying I'll practice more over the winter, but then don't, but maybe, 2024 will be different!! Hope is eternal in the high handicapper mind.

Ultimately, offset is a cosmetic preference. Contrary to popular belief, there are great players like Adam Scott and Bernhard Langer who prefer offset over no-offset.  

 

Unless you have high club head speed, amateurs need launch and forgiveness if they want to score better more consistently.

 

Amateurs don't practice nearly as much as a pro and when even most pros don't play the tiniest clubhead out there nowadays it is unlikely to be the right choice for amateurs looking to improve their scores more consistently.

 

It's not about a larger sweet spot. It's about forgiveness as you deviate from the sweet spot. If your deviation is usually towards the toe, you'll definitely benefit more from a club with more "forgiveness".  There was a study done a little while back though that if your miss is more heel-sided than toe-sided, you may be better served with a blade for more forgiveness. 

 

So, can it work for some? Sure. Can it be fun? Absolutely. But when it comes to better scores more consistently for the majority of people, go with as forgiving a club as you can stomach/love and find a level of offset that works for you. 

 

The swing is just one part of the game. If you can hit the ball straighter more consistently and apply modern course management principles like Decade / Practical Golf, you'll be surprised how quickly your scores drop even if your swing isn't aesthetically good looking.

Never said offset creates draw bias lol.....

 

Said you can get a driver that is draw bias if needed and irons should only have it on certain models when players need offset but its forced on us..... unless playin blades lol
