MP20 blades to T100… noticeable?

LeicaRedDot

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Ive had my Mizuno MP20 blades since launch and I love them, but I do wonder whether as a 4 handicap I’m leaving a few shots out there based around forgiveness?

Ive gamed AP2 in the past, and am tempted by the new T100. They look amazing and certainly a players iron without stupid lofts.

Will I notice much difference switching from the MP20 blade to the T100?

Had anyone made a similar switch and what was your experience?

No you won’t, get maybe the 225 or 245 in the 4 iron, other than that. You won’t notice anything.

I switched from the mp20mb irons to the 620 cbs.  They were a little higher spin and more forgiving.

Can’t speak to the mp20’s, but the t100’s are very forgiving for their size.  I had Nike blades and then Wilson v6, and the t100’s are more forgiving than both.  I also think the sole of the t100 plays very much like a blade.  The biggest difference to me is when you slightly miss a shot, you only loose 3 yards instead of 5-7 yards with the blade.  Not a drastic difference depending on how you hit your irons, but maybe worth a green a round.  When you hit a really poor shot with either non of these clubs help much.  The T100’s also spin a decent amount, which I think helps with the very consistent distance dispersion.

T100’s feel fine to me, but certainly not as good as the Wilson or Nike blades, so I imagine it will be the same with the Mizuno’s.  Not sure there is a better looking set of irons throughout the set then T100’s in my opinion though.

Made the same move from MP20 to T100 for the same reasons and regretted it. Feel and turf interaction were way better with MP20 in my hands. Never understood the hype around T100 and I wish I didn't get rid of the MP20 set. T100 was less forgiving than I expected and the MP20 MB's were more forgiving than I thought. Both produced a little more spin than I need. Sold the T100 and moved on to ZX7 and King Tours.

Every one I know at my level (0-5 index) leaves shots out there, just not as many as others.  MP 20s, feel ever so slightly softer than my 620 MBs, but similar loft wise.  I played 620 MB from 2019 to last Aug 2023, when I switched to the new Titleist T100 - 3-PW.

The main reason for the switch was loss of a few yards, and that measly 1' of added loft and minuscule degree of forgiveness is making up for it.  Practice makes perfect more than hoping a club design gets back a few strokes.  Course it all depends on how each of us tackles golf.

With clubs like the aforementioned, forgiveness is NOT as much of a deterrent to missed shots as with sets like T200 or T350 or comparable Ping, TM or Callaway irons.  I have been playing blades for most of the time since the nineties.  When I miss a shot, it's my fault, not the MB.  The same is true with missed T100 shots because that covered double-cavity is not as forgiving as the public is led to believe.  That's the reason the Tour players love it.  But also why T200 and T350 exist.

Buddies that play TM and Callaway 'player' irons tried my T100 out and were not at all satisfied with the results.  Funny, they had the same reaction with 620 CB irons, which I have.

Whether you notice the difference depends on how dialed in your swing is using blades.  What's intriguing the new T100 irons setting in my bag get as much attention as my 620 MB irons.

100% - I'm not good enough to game the MP20, but looks alone would lead me to believe you won't see any positive here.

I made the switch from MP20 to t100 and later to t100s. I am one who just NEEDED the t100s in the bag. They look so good, and the promise of more forgiveness in such a compact iron was intriguing. In fact, I am so drawn to the t100s that I have owned four different sets in hopes of finding out what all the fuss is about.

In short, I saw no noticeable difference in forgiveness and absolutely hated the way the t100s felt. I even got fitted on grass with a trackman. The numbers were very good, but they felt hard as a rock to me. The only way I got the feel I wanted was by going to a much softer shaft, but the spin numbers jumped up to an unplayable level in the mid and long irons.

I’m in a set of 620CBs now and am pleased with their performance. They do not feel as good as the mizunos, but the pre-worn leading edge does seem to offer some additional forgiveness for me. I’d go that route before going to the T-series, personally.

I’m of the belief that you need to leave the player’s category to see a noticeable difference in forgiveness nowadays. I’m an iron geek and have played a ton of different sets. I think something like the Zx7 might make a difference. They are viewed as “player” CBs, but are much larger to my eye, with dramatic sole relief and lower spin. I really liked them, but struggle getting used to the larger profile. I also played some PXG 0311Ps earlier this year, and they are noticeably more forgiving but don’t provide the feedback and feel through the turf that a true blade provides.

I’ve played both MP20 MB and 2021 T100. T100 7 and longer are a bit more forgiving on heal and toe strikes due to the tungsten. Not a massive difference but it’s there. Missing a groove high or low I actually like the MP20 MBs more. It’s a wash either way in the short irons.

I also laugh when people say ZX7s are “much larger” than T100. They’re the same sole width and head length. Titleist just bevels the top line edge which makes the top line look slimmer but the top line is actually the same width as ZX7. I’ve seen someone else post here with caliper measurements to show this. I currently own both and agree visually.

I really wish I had gone back and read this post I made last year again. It would have led me away from the mistake I've just made by trying to scratch the itch of a players CB v my MP20s.

Had a few fitting sessions with the mindset that of course CB's are going to be a lot more forgiving and ended up with a set of T100 with DG s400. Played 6 rounds with them and I hate them, I just can't get on with them. I'm not noticing much in forgiveness compared to my blades, maybe there was 1 shot across the 6 rounds where the toe strike ball speed saved me. I find that I get little feedback on where on the face i'm hitting the ball and I'm also experiencing one of two shots where the ball just flies hot off the face and I'm over the green by 10 yards.

I should have stuck with the clubs I love, but the problem is that testing in the sim can really convince you of anything you want. I went in thinking i needed CB irons, but now I realise that I don't.

I'm back to my MP20s and the T100's are being sold. Pains me that this mistake has cost me money, but this is all part of the golfer's journey.

You are describing my experience, as well.  I love the look of the t100s and have purchased several sets over the years in hopes that they will provide me that little "extra" help.  I just don't see it.  To be fair, I am a once per week golfer at the life stage, and so I am measuring performance based on "missed greens v. hit greens" and nor based on "10 feet short/left/right v. 7 feet short/left right."  I have also never done a "deep dive" into the metrics.  But, what I do know is that I have never had a round where I walked off the course thinking "I am sure glad I had those player's CBs in the bag today instead of my blades.  They really saved me!"

I am of the mind that I really have to get into a different category of irons to see a difference, but there are also tradeoffs.  I see/feel a difference between my blades and a Srixon ZX7, for example, but there is a trade off on the look I prefer.  I see a major performance difference when I go to something like a G425, but trade off on looks and feel.  I am struggling with the balance where I can find an iron I like hitting as much as my blades without significant (and unacceptable) trade offs.

Should you want a tad more forgiveness (not much) and want to keep the mizuno feel in your hand try the MP S-3.  They feel awesome and the new sole design just works real well for me I (my usual divot is about 4-5" long and not much dirt.

not to mention they are, to me,  the best looking irons out in many years.

They look incredible, but I rejected them thinking they wouldn’t be much different to the MP20. Thinking the T100 would be very noticeable.

I’m back with the MP20 now and T100 being sold. Might look at the S3’s next year, but would have to do a proper fitting with a Mizuno performance centre. The club fitter locally to me is not very good
