Driver Shaft for slow swinging low-ball hitter who is "down" at impact

Obee

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

Looking for something to put in my TSR3 driver.

I have generally gone for shafts that are on the heavier side, but as I age, I think I want some lighter, but not too light.

All recommendations welcome. Something in the 57g to 59g range, I think. Currently playing the Hzrdus black. 6.0

Whatever I do, I probably want to stay at 6.0 or a regular stiff as I load the shaft pretty aggressively for a slow swinger.

My swing:

Ah. 5s or 5e then. It'll feel similar to the hzrdus black but will have more tip stability.

Tighter dispersion, your playing partners will not love that you hit it even straighter...lol

If you like hzrdus black then blue may not be a good fit. Blue will be much more handle and mid section soft compared to hzrdus black.

Tr black has a stiff handle section and stiff mid section and stiff tip section. It'll be like hzrdus black but a bit firmer...depending of what flex you go to.

Ventus Blue is far different from Ventus Black.  I think Black TR in 5S(59g) could be a good fit.

Love La Purisma but haven't played there in a long time.  Long, usually windy because it's in Lompac and challenging but gorgeous layout  I envy you, lol.  As far as shafts go, I would recommend the Diamana PD or Kai'li White even though both have slightly softer handles compared to the HZDRUS black.  TR Red would be better than OG Red if you go that route as both have stiff handles, but the TR Red has a firmer tip and seems to be more stable.  Others are suggesting TR Black, but it's a different animal altogether IMO as it's very stout from tip to handle and has no kick.  It's also very low launch/spin.

If you like the feel of the HZRDUS black, why not try the HZRDUS Smoke Red RDX?  It has the same stiff butt and very stiff mid section for players with quick transitions as the black, but a medium tip section.  I'm about the same swing speed as you with a very quick transition but need a little help keeping the ball in the air. It's 60 grams and will allow you to play a regular and still hold up on aggressive swings.  I finally got my hands on one toward the end of the season last fall, but had some really promising results in the few rounds I got to play it.

Not sure which version you are playing or which weight? If you like this shaft you may want to look at the smoke version, there have been a few versions, but they come in right around 60g or just under.  If you are playing the OG in the heavier weight class you could also go down to to the 6 which is in the low 60's.

What is your driver carry distance? roll out in avg CA conditions? At 93mph you are average for male amateur golfers, so you are only a 'slow swinger' as a WRX'er (everyone swings 105+ and carries 300 yds, hits their 7i 150+). Will you give up some accuracy for more distance? Just some thoughts, sorry, can't give you a shaft suggestion. I'm thinking a golf professional would tell you in a lessen to adjust your swing to a positive launch angle to get the ball more up, but please don't take it to mean I'm saying to change your swing.

@Obee

My swing is very, very similar but even slower.

I’m not a guy who tries all the shafts, not at my speed.  But I can say that the Atmos Red 5R is probably the best match that I have encountered.  According to Fuji, the best current substitute is Ventus Red.

Another one I like very much is Kuro Kage Black HBP 2nd Generation, in 57 grams.  Also available in 65 grams.  $50 from the Golfworks, and also on eBay with lower shipping from a pseudonym account that’s really GW.  I believe it is a GW exclusive.

for 93 mph swing speed, your numbers are avg. Spin and peak height numbers? Roll out number? I am guessing with a - AOA number, you are hitting lower flight, with some roll out. If you are getting 10 yds of roll out, you are at 230-235 yds total. What tees does your group play from? Looking at a scorecard, it is not a short course. Either pick up swing speed or launch ball higher is my guess.

I usually get a bit more roll, as I hit it low. My good drives are all-in, 240 to 248. Over and over and over.

I usually play 6300 to 6800, depending on the course. I play quite a bit competitively so I play whatever  tees we are playing that day. Last tournament I played we were at 6,600  to 6,700 and I shot even par for 54 holes (70, 75, 71).

Glad to see you can swing!

I’ve always been a tweener, similar speed to a hair more (don’t have your action, lol), and ended up going from the Ventus Blue stiff I had in a Paradym to a HZRDUS Smoke 4.0/5.5/60 in the TSR2 I was fit into. Main difference was feel, honestly, but numbers were better. Getting older is just brings new data points, lol.

While not the avg WRX'er, but many golfers would love to have your problem of hitting it 240-250 over and over and over. Where did your even par score place you against your competitors? For the 70, 16 pars and 2 birdies? for the 75, 15 pars and 3 bogeys? for the 71, 17 pars and 1 birdie? Is the driver the club were you leak shots to generate a bogey or a bad position to force an up & down to make par? Are you going down a rabbit hole to find an additional 10 yards which messes up your game in other ways? The scorecard doesn't care about how, just how many. If your leaked shots are coming from one source (long irons, mid irons, wedges, etc) maybe that is the area to focus.

Thanks for your interest.

Here's the tournament. This was an elite field Senior Amateur event where I was T-12. Lots of guys in the field are ex-pros.

Was right there going into my 36th hole, but made a horrible double-bogey on 18 on day two when I went for the green from 220 on the par 5 and snapped it up against an OB fence from a weird, hanging lie in the fairway (on the edge of a mound).

Here are the full results: https://2023ojaiseniorcup.golfgenius.com/pages/4032223

That's a pretty normal result for me when healthy. I have never had trouble making birdies, as my game from 60 to 150 is very solid. Used to be ... extremely good, but I'm constantly in pain now and can't attack the ball like I used to. I still hit plenty of shots inside 12 feet from inside 150, though. It's just that I'm inside 150 less and less every year. LOL!

Here were the yardages we played:

Your drives are leaving you outside of 150 on par 4. play shorter courses. That is suppose to be a joke, sorry. A shaft change might regain some yards, but I wouldn't expect a lot, everything I understand the shaft is more for accuracy than distance. My thought is at least and even AOA and maybe a little positive AOA is where you will find a distance gain. A lot of us would still envy your game as it is, good luck in the future.

Ended up dabbling with a HZRDUS CB Red(?) 6.0. Have no idea what it is. Saw it on eBay and grabbed it. Played with it twice. Not bad. But in the winter, I just swing so slowly that it almost doesn't matter what I play! 😞
