Lydia Ko ... downside of professional golf

ssp

Recommended Posts

It's clear that either having met her or because of her likeable personality a lot of people feel as though they need to defend Ko from objective comments about how her statement & career performance compare to the words and results of other top players & phenoms in the world of sport. Discussion of her words or the totality of her career is not an indictment of her as a person, nor is it the same as some looney toon on her range trying to tell a woman how she should be swinging her club.

Rarely does this same energy come out when guys who haven't lived up to the hype--admittedly often created outside their control--surrounding them get critiqued for their comments or results. Not quite sure why the anecdotes about the player feature so much more heavily here than when the guys are being discussed for things they say regarding their perspective on their game.

You should start soliciting your sports psychology services to the top pros. I'm sure you will be high in demand since many of the top pros need to improve their mentality. I see dozens of major wins with the top pros under your wings. 😜

Your friends never invite you over to watch a sporting event huh?

Friend 1 - Dammit Rory! Make a putt! He just never makes the putt that matter these days.

tacklingdummy - Well actually, Rory has won many tournaments. He's a hall of famer. He's better than you. Lets just sit quietly and admire our superiors.

I get a confused reaction from you for a tongue in cheek post and he doesn’t get one for that?! Not cool kg72! 😠

I’ve read. Opinion didn’t change. These people are privileged to do something they enjoy and should realise it, some strange people on here just looking for arguments. Must be angry at life 😂

being successful and being grateful and thankful for your lot in life,…but also hating a ton of things about your job, are not mutual exclusive.

this is most readily observed, if you speak with a lawyer about their career ; )

Is this really that hard of a concept to wrap your head around? Let's try a different way...

Based on what Jordan Spieth accomplished by his 25th birthday would you say he's underachieved since?

Based on what Rory accomplished by his 25th birthday did you think he'd still be stuck on 4 majors?

Based on what Lydia accomplished as a freaking teenager, are you surprised she hasn't won a major since?

She's not an underachiever in absolute terms. Any human that collects a single dollar playing professional sports statistically overachieved. It's that Jordan/Rory/Lydia each set themselves on a trajectory where GOAT conversations were in play. None of them were able to sustain that pace. Why is that? What did Jack/Tiger/Annika have that those 3 and countless others don't? I find that interesting. What separates the all time greats from the merely great?

So by that logic Tiger underachieved.  🤔 He won 14 majors by age 33 and just one since…79 wins by age 38 and just 1 since.

Win early win late.  I’ve have never understood why so many think a player with a hot start to their career SHOULD maintain that pace.

Win early win late.  I’ve have never understood why so many think a player with a hot start to their career SHOULD maintain that pace.

I mean, most do consider Tiger's massive dry spell to be underachieving. Jack resoundingly & reasonably thought both he & Rory would easily eclipse him having seen them both play, alongside their actual results. People assumed Tiger would maintain his pace because he started with an amazing swing, seemingly refined it to be even better, is so talented that he's won with five variations of it, and has work ethic that's hard for most to even comprehend. He put the fear in others when he played and has an unheard of win ratio when leading going into Sunday.

I'm sure even by his own standards he underachieved. He said himself he doesn't tee it up unless he knows he can win and he's not out there unless he's trying to win. You're likely in slim company if you don't think 11 years between Majors was short of expectations for Tiger.

People consider those with an exceptional overall mix of talent and drive as those who should maintain pace throughout their career, as both their skill & experience continue to grow. That's true in sport or in life in general if we're being real. Not sure why that's a wild concept. Someone like Sebastian Vettel--absolutely awesome human being that he is--is more likely to be considered to have underachieved. Someone like Hamilton or Schumacher is likely to have lived up to expectations in their dominance over a much longer span. Just how it goes.

Oh man yeah,  I reg use 😜🤣 and 😂. Apparently this one 🙃 is the widely accepted one (though I rarely see it used 🤷🏼‍♂️) And sometimes I just won’t use any identifier because a “friend” told me sarcasm is best served raw… It typically doesn’t end well! Haha 😆

My man, there are endless comments on this site and all over the internet arguing the "what if" of Tiger. In 2009 was there a human alive, Jack included, that didn't think he was going to sprint past 18?

When Tiger's career is done, nobody is going to look back and call him an underachiever. He'll continue to be argued as the greatest of all time. But that doesn't mean we can't have honest and intelligent conversations about the back half of his career.

It's all about perspective:

Us:  Man, playing golf every day for a living, riches beyond belief, getting to be on TV, signing a few autographs How hard can it be, right!?!

Professional golfer: Practice 4-6 hrs. a day, exercise trailer 2-3 hrs. a day, talk w/swing coaches, mental coach, Flights every week, hotels every week, Crazy Media questions, poor results some weeks, schedule hard on relationships, etc.....

Some pros even travel with their own mattess.....Man, this can be a job and a real drag sometime.

Yep, all about perspective.🙂 Just a little satire.

Of course there are those that feel the pros that started off great should continue their career trajectory as they started.  Is there any pro that started off great AND maintained it?  If there was they would be easily the greatest of all time.  Jack and Tiger both had lean years and some will argue they “should” have won more.   The same folks will praise a Hogan type as he started his career more slowly and then seemed to “find it”.  It’s the same guys that will hammer the player that starts a single event hot and fade to finish 5th AND laugh at a “back door” top 10 when a guy starts slowly but finishes well.

A career is like a  tournament.  It’s the overall performance that matters.

I think everyone can understand an aging curve and ebbs and flows to performance. I don't expect LeBron to dominate at 40 like he did at 28. Nobody expected Roger Federer to be the same player at 35 that he was at 25. Rory's flown past a decade since winning a major. I'm not calling him a failure because he doesn't have 12 majors, I'm saying I'm shocked he's still at 4. Jordan's on a 7 year dry spell, Lydia's on an 8 year drought. I don't think it's reasonable to expect any player to knock off 1 -2 every year, but I do find it surprising when someone really excels for 4-5 years and then goes silent for nearly a decade. Especially when there isn't some injury explanation.

Why is she not wearing the same outfit as Korda?  Is she not representing the USA?  Wearing black and not the colors of the country she is representing is unacceptable!

New Zealand athletes are sometime known as the All Blacks, which is the nickname for their successful rugby team.

I don't care if you're trolling, New Zealand is a sporting powerhouse with a population of about 5 million. They deserve the recognition.

Even their Olympic runners have worn all black for a long time.
