I thought this was a good video. I'm a little bit surprised it took them as long as it did to get to the grip, but… sometimes you don't think it's going to be something as simple/foundational as that, since as a player you don't notice it slowly working in one direction or another.

 

This was a good idea of the types of things that can have a big ripple effect, and the types of work instructors do with players all the time.

Hadn't thought much about the effect of grip strength on side bend/spine tilt at address. Was looking at the thread with Montie's old vid on that last week as it was something my instructor worked with me on a while ago. Seemingly their tweak of getting Hoffman stronger and encouraging that tilt at address will also help give him a bit of relief on his back in the takeaway as well.

 

It is funny that "strong" was going back to two knuckles showing, which I've always thought of and seen taught as neutral; Tiger called his 2 1/2 knuckles showing position neutral and said he used to be much stronger as a junior. Hard to catch a really good shot from the right angle of the before & after but he must have been quite weak. 

 

Great vid showing the value of having someone who knows the swing work with a player alongside having all the relevant data possible to help get the answers sooner rather than later.

I think I paid $150 for the first session, assessment of my physical capabilities, like range of motion, and other factors, I think there was 47 tests, and then your swing.  Reality being if your body cant do certain things then you need to develop a swing that your body can actually do. 
 

I highly recommend doing it and following through with some lessons.
I went from 13 to 7 index.  
 

All tolled, about the same price as a new driver…

Though I’m as guilty as anyone, I try on most occasions to give more than just a number of knuckles reference.

 

Maybe Charley has thicker forearms, so to see even two knuckles… it’s what you might call a three-knuckle grip? Seems unlikely but not impossible.

 

But, yeah… Tour players are also so good at the stuff. When Charley demonstrated going “knuckles up” and Mark jumped up, it was him barely doing it. If Mark hasn’t seen knuckles up in awhile like a true 22 handicapper can do, I’ll show him sometime and he’ll need a change of pants. 😄 

 

It’s also relative (a bit) to how your arms hang and where their “neutral” is. I have one guy whose neutral is three knuckles, easily. I have another who broke his arm as a child and as it was in a poor country/he was poor, it wasn’t set properly, so it’s painful for him to get the back of his left hand to the target, even in the follow-through, so he’s a four-knuckle grip all day out of necessity, and we’ve built the swing around that. He’ll likely never be a +3, but he can play to a 3 to 5 all day. It honestly affects his short game more than anything else.

 

Anyway… yes, this stuff has a ripple effect throughout the swing. I harp on balance a lot, too, because if your body is re-adjusting your balance during the backswing, your pelvis is moving all over the place, and so is the club. Setup matters just due to the ripple effects.

Interesting video.  As I understand it Hoffman hurt his back and could not get his hips through which caused him to flip a bit which resulted in his weakening his lead hand grip to compensate without realizing it.   Also they mentioned some EE was involved.

 

I wonder what the timeline looked like for these events?  Did they catch it fairly quickly?

I've had similar issues with not being able to keep a strong grip because of back issues.  What they don't address in this video is maybe he shouldn't have a stronger grip that makes him have to rotate more.  Maybe that leads to back problems?  Trevino/Couples?
