2024 Iron Battle!

Heading to test some Irons for 2024.  

 

Played Srixon Zx7 in 2021 and 2022 and T100S / ZX7 MKII in 2023.  At the end of 2023 in Sept I broke my hand and haven't played golf since then.

Long Time Wrxer (15 years!!!), Former Club Ho but have since slowed down.

 

In 2021 I was down to a 2.8 Index and was playing the Best golf of my life.  Was trending down.  Folded the last 9 in the club championship after a 32 on the front that season and have struggled since then.  Before my hand injury I was a up to a double digit cap and ended the season as one and it was well deserved.  Also struggled with the putter and had 1 Shank a round.  Sometimes 2.  Was very busy at work, coaching baseball and hockey and had many many business commitments.

 

I'm refocusing in 2024 and I'm planning to have the lowest cap Ive ever had.  I have also started a series of lessons.

 

So it starts with buying all new equipment for 2024!!!!

Here are my Options:

 

T150 - loved my T100s.  I also like the LZ 6.0 Shaft.  I was hoping to get something maybe slightly larger but well see how I hit these.

 

243 - LONG time Mizuno MP53 player.  Love mizuno but feel like they have missed the past few releases of MP irons.  The 24 series Look much better though.  I could also get these stock as I really got along with the Modus 120 in the Srixon

 

225 - Never hit a hollow Irons I've liked.  The reviews are too good to ignore and I have to give them a shot.  Plus they Looks amazing.

 

T200 - Same as 225.

 

Wilson CB - My last fitting (I believe it was early 2021) The Wilson CB irons won.  Easily.  I never purchased them as I was happy with that I was playing but Ill give them a go.

 

ZX7 MKII - I loved the Zx7.  I found them much more forgiving than the T100s.  I did demo the MKII and thought they maybe were a step back feel wise than original but maybe I was having a bad day.

 

I am planning on walking out of the store tomorrow with one of these sets.

 

Anything else I should try??

 

Before the "get fitted" crowd chimes in I have been fitted many times.  Every club similar loft that Ive hit has been 5-10 percent of eachother.  So Id rather focus on looks and Feel this time.

I ordered the 230s at the end of last year.  I have the set now Im trying to move.  I just don't like ping lol.  Or Callaway.  NO reason why.

If I was looking for an iron more forgiving than true players cavity, something like T150 or 243 then I would just go full into that category and get something like the p770, super easy to hit and straight.

Love my 225s, but I do miss my jpx921 HMP. The look and feel of those really grew on me and I found them super easy to point and shoot.  Forgiveness was amazing as well.  Good luck on your quest!

Cobra Tour. Look at address is comparable to ZX7/T150 and feel is incredible.

Tbh I’d highly recommend going for the OG ZX7 with your preferred shaft as that’s what you played your best golf with. You’ll be able to find a mint set around still.

Try PXG 0317T, I just finished 7 weeks of fittings and iron testing. I thought I was going to be playing Srixon MkII zx5, but two PXG fittings later I pulled the trigger on the 0317T’s with Steelfiber shafts. 1/2 long, 2° flat, these things look phenomenal laying on the ground at address. I’ve only got 27 holes on them and they appear to be at least one club longer then my current gamers ping i210.

Suggesting you do not hit the Gen6 P…..feels better than any others you have mentioned. Performs too. I can decide between my current Gen5 P’s and 223/243 or 225.

Biased since I recently got a set in the bag, but the T150s are lookers, and I find them every bit as forgiving as the p770s they replaced. Haven't really been a PXG fan, but the new 0317T would definitely have a chance at the bag too.

Cobra tours are a must try it beat out most of those for me. Also the Wilson cb is a good choice to add in. My 2024 staff irons are brand new to the bag but I’m loving them. They’ve always had a solid iron.

Bob Rotella is the biggie in the pond I guess.

I’d go T150 personally. Hit the ZX7 MkII, P770, and T150 on the same day and felt the T150 was noticeably better. Comboing with the T200 in the 4 and 5 makes a lot of sense.

That's a classic. I'll throw in another because it completely changed my game: The Zen of Golf. After years of being a hothead and it costing me shots, that book got me to approach each shot with a clear head. Can't recommend it enough.

Any book from Vision 54, Pia Nilsson & Lynn Marriott. I dropped 5 strokes last year thanks to those guys.

Cobra tour.  Have had t150, zx7mk2 and these are more forgiving but not massive head size

Cobra have got some secret sauce right now. I just got my new King CB/Tour combo set a few days ago and these irons are incredible. Had 3 separate fittings and tried every brands players iron. The Cobras not only performed the best for me but they also felt the best. Feeling wise Mizuno was second best and T100/T150 just didn't feel good to me. Performance wise T100 and ZX7 MKII were the closest behind the Cobras

I played the ZX7 mkii and the latest Apex Pro last year.  Similar in playability for both for me.

I would say add the blueprint s.  Much more compact than typical ping from last 5 years and very competive with the rest of the irons you have listed.
