What were you using when you shot your lowest round(s)?

I won't be buying new clubs this year because of budget, so I have been reminiscing about times past instead. I was thinking about the clubs that got me the lowest scores I have posted and it made we start thinking about why I am not playing something similar now?  My lowest unofficial round was 74.  We got darked out on 16 with two pretty easy holes left (a par 3 and a short par 4 that is no more than hybrid and PW to the green but it forces you to control your shots as the fairway is short and the green not very deep).  I gave myself a par and a bogey for a +2 on a 6100 125/70.3 course.   My lowest official round was 78 at Long Bay in Myrtle Beach from the Blues (6600, 72.3/141). If memory serves I believe those came in the same year.  If not, they may have been 1 year apart.

A few rounds in the high 60s using my current bag.

My lowest round/score happened twice with a pair of 76's, which happened several months apart back in 2008 or so.  If I recall correctly, at that time, I was using a beat-up TaylorMade R7 driver, Cleveland Quadpro 4 and 7 woods, and a set of Mizuno cavity back irons (T-zoid???) and an old Wilson wedge with a TearDrop putter. That was my set up for quite a while, back when before I totally lost my game.  Those were fun times back then around here and in my golf trips to Myrtle Beach.

66 before I had kids in the summer of 2014.  Shot under Par 3 times that summer and that day the whole looked as big as a beach ball.  Titleist 905 R, Mizuno MP 30's, Mizuno CLK Hybrid, a mix match of Cleveland and Vokey wedges, and the main weapon that day was my Scotty Cameron Studio Design which I have had in the bag since High School.  Fun day.

Numerous 68-71''s years ago, most shot with Ping i20 clubs (driver \irons) and Scotty NP2. Wouldn't trade em for my current set up and the Scotty is still in the bag. Father Time is under par now while I'm in the 72-78 range. 

Every time I tee it up I try to break a person record (score, birds, low putts, etc)

I still own darn near every club that I used to shoot my career best in a PGA matchplay event about 4 years ago.  

 

But, as some of you who know some of the threads that I start some of the time probably have already sussed out, not a single, solitary one of those clubs is currently in the bag.

Shot my best score 67 (-3) at the course I play for college with the bag I have now minus the Qi10, had the S2+ then. Best ever score is at my course back home 66 (-6) with the same, just think my 4i was a 730 instead of the PXG.

The only way I go low is with good putting. The one constant has been an old Newport 1 style putter, be it a Scotty or an Odyssey, but have given me some 69s. My first round breaking 70 was with an old set of Mizuno MP33s and a Newport 1, all the rest have been fairly recent as I picked the game back up after a sizable layoff using an Odyssey Tri Hot One. It's been booted for a LAB Link 1 for now, but that's been misbehaving too...

It was a while ago but I recall ping isi-s irons and a Callaway big Bertha warbird driver 10 dgereees with a dynamic gold s300 shaft.

Best round was in 2012ish and have had multiple stretches that have gotten close to that round between 2013 and 2019 but since the end of 2019 my ball striking has been very poor. Back then I would just order clubs through my golf course without much knowledge of numbers, weights, shaft profiles, etc and go play them. The clubs I used for my best round were not fit and just based on what looked good and what I wanted to play.

August-October 2018. 13 rounds over 2.5 months and worst score was 70. Shot 64 at my home course but best round was Labor Day golf trip to WV areas.  Nemacolin Mystic Rock first time playing, no caddie, from the tips(7500+ and around 78 rating) I shot 70 with 3 3-putts on back 9 coming in.  Definitely wasn’t clubs at the time but a major swing “click”. But that entire stretch I had the same clubs in the bag.

The entire round was dedicated to piping every drive 275 down the middle and being able to use my PW from 40-100 yards out to hit knock down shots in the center of the green. Allowed for a lot of 1-2 putts. Its amazing how easy golf is when you can just put the ball within 15 ft. from the pin inside 100 yards every time. Havent been able to replicate it since.
