Oh so long ago….

Playing a club Ryder Cup match…

IIRC Ping SI3 driver,

Cleveland Launcher FW’s, 3+, 3HL, 7. Ping G2 Irons, a couple Golfsmith hybrids.

And this takes the cake, a Scotty Newport, which I’d won in a tourney a year earlier, tried it a few times, didn’t work. Putted so poorly the day before with my gamer, a Rossie, desperate, I resurrected the Scotty from the stash, the grip was misaligned by about 45°… from the factory.

Hit 17 greens, I made everything, from anywhere.

Had to give my opponent one shot, he was one over after 14, and I’d closed him out.

I was a five, despite the match being over I was grinding till the end.

Lipped out on 18, shot 66.

This reminds me, and this is totally off topic, but there is a 290ish yard par 4 at a course we used to play regularly. I hit driver and it ended up like 4 or 5 feet above the hole with a slider putt. He RIPPED a driver and was like 8 feet below the hole. I still regret putting the pressure on him, but I said to him walking up to the green how awesome would it be if we both eagled this together. He asked me to putt first and I made it. I then commented, "do not leave this short", and he left it 2 inches short in the heart. Still bugs me to this day, but almost makes a better story. Almost.

I'm much the same - of course I've celebrated when I hit great shots, but when my dad hits great shots - that's another world of special. I still remember when he birdied TWO of the hard par 3s at Torrey Pines South, and when he made his first eagle - took a picture and that's still one of my favorite moments I've EVER had in golf.

A lot of very good players commenting in the thread it’s fun to read. To me the true beauty of golf is everyone who plays no matter what level has rounds that are “outside” their normal and change in your mind what you believe is possible. It becomes our chasing the dragon in this game. I would imagine the emotions for each player are very similar too. Whether your best is 65 or 79 or 89 I would believe they feel very similar to each player and to me that is so cool.

I dk how others feel, but while I was nervous shooting my current PB, I was WAY more nervous when I broke 80 for the first time. I was so much more inconsistent at that time, so the score never felt safe until I made the putt on the 18th. Shot 78 and that might be the most hyped I've ever been on a golf course. Still have the scorecard.

76 in the early 2000's. 4 over after 2, birdied both par 5's on the front to get it back to 2 over at the turn. Back nine I was hanging on for dear life. Ended up 2 over on the back. At the time I had only broken 80 twice.

The 17th hole the tee was off to the right and the fairway was angled left to right. I blew my drive 40 yards through the fairway on the side of a hill in the uncut native grass. I managed to find my ball right away. I yell down to my cousin in the fairway "What's that yardage there?" he's standing 3 feet away from a sprinkler head.

He yells back "125!" I grab my 9 iron, thinking a little 3/4 with the funky stance should be just about right.

I'm addressing my ball and he yells, "Sorry, it's 150!" I go back to my bag and grab the 7 iron. Thinking 3/4 off the funky lie. As I start my downswing he yells, "Nope, it's 125!"

Balls in the air, I'm thinking it's going to be 15 yards over the green. Ball lands about 20 feet past the hole, 2 putt par. I walk down to the fairway and the sprinkler head says 153. He never looked at it, he just guessed the yardage (poorly.)

Misery loves company...

In my +2 round of 73 mentioned earlier, I hit 14 greens in regulation.  I had one birdie for sure, #18, don't remember if I had others.  One missed GIR was my rinsing my 2nd on the par 5 15th, where I got up and down for par.

I remember missing at least six putts of six feet or less.

Just brutal.  🤢

Man, that's tough!!! Those are good GIR/FIR stats though. Usually, for me one/two things are off on the day and I'm battling to score par on each hole rather than challenge for birdie.

Best score was a one over 35 on my par 34 home course. I played pretty well, and had some luck too.

The bag consisted of

D taylormade r1s

3w Cleveland Hibore

17° Adam's idea xtd ti super hybrid

4-5hy Adam's speedline

6-AW Cleveland 588 mts

56° Cleveland 588 rtx cb 2.0

60° Warrior

P- Knight ezroll zr5

I had a chance to shoot even par with a putt on 9, but I decided to lag it close instead of risking blowing it way past. Sometimes I think about it and give myself a little mental kick as it would have taken a meltdown that even Van de Velde would feel sorry for me. Oddly enough I don't remember having many nerves about it. I think it's because I was just enjoying the good play, I was so far ahead of my previous best that I didn't even pay attention to the total until the last hole.

Best I ever shot was 67, did it a few times, 20+ years ago. Can't even get close anymore

Driver Titleist 975J, Titleist PT15, Mizuno T-Zoid Pro II, Cleveland 588 Wedges, and a BeCu Ping Anser 2 which I still have.

And to be clear, I would use those same clubs again in a heartbeat if I could shoot those scores again.

Not sure on ball most likely a 25 dollar ball from one of the top brands.

On 17th hole sitting on 80 and the 18th is a par 5 i can usually reach in two for eagle half the time i play it so i feel if i can par the 17th maybe i can eagle to have my best round ever or at least birdie to tie my best round at that moment which was 79. I hit a 4 iron instead of laying up to a downhill 190 yrd par 3 that i alway seem to push a shot right on. Well the ball went pushed right lol and in the heavy rough it was not findable for about no joke 5 6 mins. Finally found it by luck and chiped 15 yards to maybe 4 feet. Made the putt so that was one issue down. Now the par 5 18th... hit a good drive for myself about 260. Had to hit a 3 wood 230 off the deck but the problem was i topped my 3 wood 2 other times ealier. Got over it and absolutely clobbered the 3wood pin high couldnt belive it when we pulled up. Now the finale. 15 feet right of the pin a flat put that slightly breaks left at the end. I told my dad what the putt ment.. my lowest score ever and it was to sink a eagle lol got over it lined up just thought give it the right pace.. putt.. roll..clank clank eagle! Unforgettable moment for me in golf with my dad who started me playing when i was 5.

My lowest rounds were back-to-back 67s (-3) when I was 18, the summer after I graduated high school.  Happened to be playing with the same co-worker both times.  My set up at the time was as follows:

TaylorMade r7 Quad driver

TaylorMade Firesole 3 wood

Nike Pro Combo irons (3-PW)

TaylorMade RAC Black 52° wedge

Cobra Phil Rodgers raw 60° wedge

Odyssey White Hot 2-ball putter

I remember both of those rounds vividly.  The course record at the time was 66 (-4) (yes, not that low, I lived in a small town area in NH), and at one point in both rounds I was -4, but made a stupid bogey and ended up at -3.

Not ashamed to admit I have never broken 80. Never practiced/put in the work enough. Closest I cam was 15 years ago at Ancil Hoffman GC Sacramento. Shot 45 on the front. 38 on the back. Had a chance to shoot a better score at end of season tournament had it not been for the 3 tee shots I hit OB on the 4th hole. Yes. 3 tee shots OB. One after the other yanked left. Living nightmare.

Ping ISI with steel shafts.

I was about a 12 handicap at the time and carded a 73 on a pretty tough course (my old CC).

Followed it up the next week with a 74.

It was impossible to keep that up and I soon woke up from my beautiful golf dream.

My index plummeted and I was a human ATM for the rest of the year : )

I shot +1 (72 on a par 71) at Cedar Crest in Dallas this past September with my current set.  The only difference may have been the hybrid I had in my bag for the 3 hybrid spot and the shaft that's in my driver.  That was a Motore F1 7s, and I didn't hit that well at all that day, but my misses were in play and I was hitting my irons really well that day.  My 3 hybrid might have been the OG UW or the trusty XTD 19* Super Hybrid, but I can't remember.  4 wood was the same as well, but it was a different shaft at the time.  4 hybrid, irons, wedges, and putter are current in my signature.  Round could have been under par, but I finished bogey-bogey. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Stealth 2 Plus driver, Stealth 2 plus 5 wood turned down, 3 hybrid spot, Adams super 9031 23* hybrid, 5-P ZX7 with DG AMT White s300, Zipcore RTX 6 wedges, Toulon Las Vegas h4.5

I shot 73 (+1) another time.  Bag setup was pretty much the same as what I shot the other round described above in terms of the irons and similar wedges.

5-P ZX7

RTX Zipcore wedges

Toulon Las Vegas h4.5

Had the OG Stealth Plus with my driver.  Can't remember the fairway wood at all.  The 3 hybrid was my Adams XTD 19*, and the 4 iron was a Maltby TS1 that I was messing around with for a bit.

Titliest 660 and/or mp33

200 Series Vokeys

905T and Cleveland Launcher before it

Santa Fe or Studio Designs 2.5

66 a few times, but also plenty of 90s.  These were my clubs when I had infant and young kids so they saw me through the 3-5 rounds per year phase and also my good ball striking, shooting at every flag and putting well phases.

Put the 660s into a Sunday bag and am using them again.  They are better than my t100 except for a toe miss.  Forgot how much I like x100 shafts and how great they really perform.  Still have the worn out Vokeys and the 905T hits low spin missiles as good as any club today except for your off center hits are brutal - neither will be making a return.  If you have your old clubs, give them a shot - you might be surprised how good they still are (or how much your new ones might not be).

I have several rounds of 69 to my name. Interestingly the last three all came on the heels of one another back in 2020. It was right after COVID. I was so dissatisfied with my equipment at the time that I sold it all and put together a makeshift bag with what I had in the garage while I tested new gear.  It was an entire bag of gear I would never expect to play well with - a complete “Frankenstein” bag. Here it is:
