Choking up to replace a club?

I’ve been toying with the idea of pulling my 4i lately as the gapping creeps in on 5i and the lofts are only two degrees apart.  

instead of replacing the 4i with another club like a 4H, what about just choking down on 3H to split the difference. Obviously need to try it out for myself to see but anyone do this consistently? 
 

mainly concerned about consistent distance. If this worked, I would maybe just keep the 4i for tee shots and punch outs.

Many answers. Great that your thinking of a Simple Solution!👍Basically is the 3 hybrid  comfy club to hit. Does it offer shot shape you need...eg up hill draw, fade or straight shot option. 

I have a 20 degree V Steel 7 wood. Just looking at a J36 22 degree hybrid option...yes i love Bridgestone...

If you gaps are creeping closer - choking down on the 3h isn't going to solve your problem IMO. You need height at that loft - look into a FW 

 

You might carry that 3h the needed distance- but it'll be on a much flatter trajectory

Well the 3H gets good height and hits 210 carry and 220 total. 5 iron  185-195.

 

the four iron gaps fine at 195-205 but the issue is consistency. The G425 3H is easy to hit so was thinking ok maybe G425/430 4H but was just thinking if simplifying with just the 3H makes more sense and reserving that 4i for tee only. Maybe even condiser changing the 4i shaft to graphite. 
 

anyway, I booked a fitting after posting this to try FW, hybrid, DI, shaft change and everything in between. Guess we’ll see Monday

It is but in my experience hasn’t made much of a difference

What's your stock shot with your 3H? Draw, fade, striaght-ish...?

 

Choking down on your 3H just might solve your issue and/or hitting a high cut with it....

Choking down can be a valid approach, but I think you need to treat it sort of like another club - it takes some practice and reps to get used to it.

 

Other approaches are altering shape (as mentioned above to hit a higher, softer fade), or altering swing speed.

 

There is tendency to think that these sort of adjustments are too difficult and one shouldn't mess with your "stock shot", but I don't think that's the case if one does practice them a bit. We adjust all the time for lie, rough, slope, wind, etc... so adjusting for a bit shorter shaft length, shape or swing speed is just another tool to bring out. For most, I think it won't "just work" automatically - just like any new club takes time to find its place in your game - but it's not such an enormous adjustment, either.

Choke down a hair, play the ball slightly forward and work a high cut in there. Try putting that in play. It's a great shot to have in the bag and helps fill a lot of gaps when you have in between yardages too.
