Shooting your age.. When & how did it happen for you.

This is definitely a long term goal for me. As a 3-4 handicap range approaching the age of 50, I first have to live and stay healthy into my early 70's, which would be Job 1! From there, hopefully I can keep playing relatively well and give it a go someday. There is a member at our club that shot his age a few years ago at age 83 I believe. It was a big accomplishment, and he got a nice round of applause in the spike bar after that round! Hopefully one day, I will be trying.

Shot a 42 on the Front 9 at The Warrior on my 42nd Birthday. A full round score? The odds of that happening are always going to be fairly slim.

My first time was when I was 77 and shot that score. It was 2020 and we had “COVID cups”, just hit the foam insert in the cup and the putt was good. So maybe that one deserves an asterisk. Did it the next year for real, a 78 featuring an HIO. Have done it a few other times, most recently a month or so an 80 at age 81.

All these were from senior tees— 5500 yds. down  to 5100. Legit by my standards and capabilities.

I shot my age once but I wasn't my age when I shot it. 31 back 9 to finish 2 under 70. Now that I'm 75,  I don't have to break par to do it again.

First time for me was at 67 and shot that score twice that year. I’m now creeping up on 73 and while I’m a relatively healthy geezer, like everyone else I’ve lost 20 yards on my drive and similar loss throughout the bag. The distance loss is manageable as I now play 6000 yard courses in league matches, and occasionally 6300 yards. What I haven’t figured out yet is how to maintain concentration for 18 holes every time I play. I can do it on occasion, but typically I’m good for 13-14 holes and then the proverbial wheels come off. Shooting my age these days is like finding a $20 bill while doing the laundry- it’s a nice but rare occurrence.

Funny backstory to my first 67- my regular playing partner who I carpool with was in a different foursome so when we met back at my truck I was strutting like a peacock and couldn’t wait to show him my card. He’s 2 years older than me and we were similar handicaps at that time. He looked at my card and said nice round and then showed me his score - 64. The air escaping my balloon was audible.

I just turned 72. Normally play 6 to 8 times a month and shoot consistently around 84 to 86. Usually, play from the white tees, ave. drive around 250. Irons from 8 (150 yds) down to the wedges are pretty good. I miss a lot of 6 to 10ft puts. Last year I had a chance to shoot my age but boggied the last hole to shoot a 72. Unlikely to get that close again.

First shot my age at 68. 38-30 on a 6700 yard track. For some reason on the back nine every shot was within 10 feet or so from the pin.  From then on ultill 81 if was easy to shoot my age. At that time the lens in one of my eyes came loose ( had had a cataract operation ten years before). Fixing that by cutting out the old lens and sewing in a new one has made me far sighted in one eye and near sighted in the other.

There is no fix for this and it has made my sort game really poor with distance  control on pitches, chips and long putts along with making it had to focus on the ball when hitting as if my head moves at all the ball seems to change position.  It's getting better as the cornelia evolves to it's final shape but shooting my age has become a lot more difficult.

That said I'm still able to play and enjoy the game. Probably well over half the people at my age are pushing up grass so I really have no complaints.

To accomplish this feat requires; one, playing great golf; and two, having good health in mature years.  I hope to be able to one day.

A guy in my league is 87 and he is consistently among the toughest competitors. He shoots his age all the time. He didn’t move up to the senior tees until this year, lol. Now he is nearly unbeatable.

Just stumbled into this  thread.  My DOB is 1949 and I actually had to think about this. I had always (personal choice) considered a true shoot your age round  to be a middle tees thing (call it 6200 to 6400 yards) at par 72. I moved up from those tees several years ago so shoot my age is kind of out of reach from that perspective. OTOH,  I shot a 74 several months back so i guess that  I have shot my age if I would just get off my middle tees snob box.
