yes, it's a real question....I still don't know what it is. I've had experiences on both the standard & recumbent stationary bikes, also the stairstep, & treadmill.The last gym I attended probably had all those things, but I was there for the swimming pool & circuit workout.

I can see where it would help.  I go to the gym 3-4 times a week.  After 18 holes, I am heading home to plop my asssss in front of the big screen with a beer to watch golf.

Thanks, I can't recall ever seeing one....just out of curiosity, how is it different from stair steps?

The step mechanism has a rotary motion.  Not too much unlike bicycle pedals

In a few ways, including cardio, similar, but elliptical has more pace/speed options and elevation.  Its design allows me to couch down similar to how I'd drive my legs on the scrimmage line, and propel myself forward as fast as I can to the music.

 

Because of its fluid motion, less physically demanding on the legs over 30–40 mins.  Stair steps are fixed, and affect specific aspects of the legs.  I have multiple level stairs in my house, which gives almost the same exercise.

Good stuff!  I've got 2 bad arthritic knees and I'm hooked on the Arc Trainer machine at Planet Fitness.  It is similar to an elliptical but instead of your heels coming up off the footpads and driving the toes forward, your feet stay flat on the pedals and you drive your legs through your heels backwards and down.  It works the hamstrings and glutes more than the quads like an elliptical but its a great workout.  Anything that drives my knees out over my toes just kills my knees.  But with the Arc Trainer, I can get aggressive cardio work without doing that move.  I try to mix it up and use a stationary bike too, along with walking on a treadmill.
