AI-One Broomstick vs LAB Broomstick

Cheesehead42

Recommended Posts

Has anyone compared the AI-One #7 CS Broomstick putter with the LAB's? The shaft seems to enter in a similar spot to the LAB so was wondering if they are also equally stable?

They are 1/3 the price and easier to look at as well.

@Cheesehead42

That design tells me that finally Odyssey has begun to understand how a long putter should be engineered. I love face progression in a long putter, whether broom or face on.  I think we will find that it has very little torque.  Not enough to matter anyway.

I mean, L.A.B. uses their balancing by hand on every single putter, as grip, shaft, length and lie angle all influence this.

So NO, the Callaway probably will not stay square by itself, the L.A.B. does.

My assumption is that since Odyssey is not allowing for custom lie angles or grips like LAB, the stock version is balanced. I cannot find one on a shelf to confirm though.

Incorrect. The Odyssey will NOT be LIE ANGLE balanced at the designated lie angle - even the stock version. It will likely be balanced when the shaft is held horizontally but not at the designated playing lie angle.

You can't know this.  It could very easily be balanced at the lie angle.  All that takes is having a straight shaft that goes into the center of gravity of the head.  It's not hard to do, if a designer wants to.

It will be pretty darn close imo. At 1/3 of the price...I would be using this instead of the Mezz personally.

Lab works for some not others. As in all things golf equipment a lot of is purely marketing.  If Lab was transformational everyone would use one. Its science is just another way to putt. YMMV.

Tbh, if you Look at where LAB is coming from (a niche brand 3 years ago), then everybody IS using it. They went from „a company that makes ugly putters“ to being in multiple bags on tour and winning there in a relatively short time. Nobody went out and had their product in everybodys bag in 2 seconds

And their putters are transformational 😉

Karstens putters were transformational. Odyssey's inserts at the time were also. I highly doubt Lab will ever reach the usage levels of Ping, Odyssey et al. Would the current rage of the mid length Jailbirds qualify as "transformational"? Thers a hell of a lot more of those on Tour vs Lab. Its just, like Lab another way to putt.

And you as a user of Lab will defend it as a breakthrough because its helped with your putting and that's great.  But if you had tried say a Jailbird and it transformed your putting you'd be singing its praises.  Glad that Lab is working for you. Have a great day.

I ordered one this afternoon. It's classified as pre-order for now but I did see an option for standard lie angle or 1 or 2 degrees upright or flat lie angles. I ordered it at standard lie angle at 46" in length. I did try LAB putter but I'm not sure if it's what I would like to use.

Received my putter this afternoon, I was shocked as I did not expect it for another two weeks or so. I had tried LAB broomstick few days ago at a golf store, they both felt and looks bit different. This Odyssey putter has the shaft that is bit angled into the head. I do think LAB Golf will offer more options for fitting. If I had the money to burn, I'd go with LAB Golf for fitting purposes.

Has anyone cut one of these down (or reshafted) to a conventional length? What would need to be done to it to make this “work”? I’m assuming a heavier shaft and a lot of lead tape? I like my LAB Mezz, but much prefer the feel and look of the Odyssey 7 so was thinking of experimenting. (I know it won’t be balanced like my Mezz.)

It's going to be VERY upright for a standard length putter.

Many broomstick heads are WAY heavier than standard. I believe the LAB ones are around 500g. So helium tape might be required instead of lead 😉

Its 1/3 the price because it is bare bones with zero options.  Don't know what the lie angle is on the Odyssey but LAB's ideal lie angle is 79.5 deg (nearly upright).  80 is the most allowable so 79.5 is as close you want to flirt with that.  That 79.5* lie angle is great for a straight back straight through stroke.  Take that, the custom lie angle balancing, shaft options, grip options, head options, and alignment options the cost will be a little more than a run of the mill off the rack putter.

Odyssey lie angle  is 78* and 48” long which seems kinda long for a stock length.

Very long.  I saw one in the store and 48" felt excessively long.  I'm 6' and 45" is the longest I would consider going.  48" would seem to fit a very small amount of people.

Yes, very long, but makes production easier if they aren't cutting the shafts down. I wish I had a store near me than carried broomstick putters because everything about them seems helpful.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you play a LAB putter.   The Odyssey putter looks better...likely feels better....and has a face insert designer to be more forgiving on off centre hits.  Is it lie angle balanced? No. That's the difference....on is a mass produced head with no fine adjustments, the other is not. I understand why the price is different...I'd still choose the Odyssey.

Disclaimer.  I have never gamed a broomstick, but dodgy pressure putting from under 4 feet has me desperate.  Note, I currently rotate between 8802 style, Scotty JAT and a SIK DW Armlock.  I can yip a short pressure putt with all of them.

My experience is only the PGAtour superstore indoor putting green.  I had tried the Mezz Max Broomstick and the standard DF3 both with Accra shafts on two different occasions for about a 2 hour total.  Last Friday, they actually had the Odyssey AI one CS Broomstick in what appeared to be the standard configuration.  I putted with it and the Mezz Broomstick side by side for about 90 minutes.  I am only 6 ft tall, and my guess was the Odyssey was only about 47 inches.  It seemed only slightly longer than the Mezz.  I guess it could have been a custom order.  The lie was slightly flatter, and I would push it towards 80 degrees if I ordered.  Odyssey does have the option to order +/- 2 degrees and lengths 45"-48" in 1/4 inch increments.    Loft / Length options are no charge.  They also offer a 15% veterans discount when ordered direct from Odyssey.  (With verification of course.).  This brings the price to sub $300 new.

Performance is subjective, but I preferred the Odyssey, but I would order it @46" and 80 degrees.  I liked the feel of the Mezz Max, but it was not as nice as the DF3.  With the Mezz I had a tendency to push putts, probably from the weight encouraging me to take it inside.  If the DF3 does come out in a broomstick, I will try it.

I do play a LAB and there is no way on planet earth the Odyssey is more forgiving than a Mezz Max broomstick.  We can go back and forth all day long but the Odyssey looks like an afterthought design.

How long have you tried an Odyssey AI-one CS Broomstick for?  How different were your results on mishits compared with your Mezz Max?  I fully understand different preferences, but tell us your actual experience.  The Odyssey has only just been released so lots of folks would like to hear a comparison.  I did actually spend several hours with both, but I have never gamed either on a golf course.  I am just trying to discern if your opinion is based on any personal experience with both putters.  If not, I am not sure how useful it is.
