Bermuda, Port Royal Golf course

Going to Bermuda this summer and will try to play Port Royal Golf course. Surpringly, since this is a tour stop, I've heard some negative reviews on course conditions and club rentals. Anyone play recently and found conditons have improved?

Skip Port Royal and play Mid Ocean. They allow outside play on certain days and I heard you can replay for free. Played it in October, picture looking back down 4 and shot of the 5th Cape hole. Unreal track, can't wait to get back.

Port Royal is a really good golf course.  It is very fun to play and rentals are fine (mid game improvement Taylor Made throughout the bag).  Conditions are fine not great or outstanding, but not as bad as some may make out.  The entire course is as you would suspect, seeded with bermuda grass.  If you have not played it often it can be a bit offputting, especially on the greens.  That may be the source of some of the conditioning ire.

 

Mid Ocean is a better layout and will be in better condition.  A higher end experience to be sure, but is also much more expensive and the real kicker for me is that Mid Ocean is an hour away from the cruise terminal.  Port Royal is 20mins.  If you are not cruising and staying closer then Mid Ocean is the better golf and facilities, but Port Royal is not a dud.  It is a solid fun course.

I would absolutely not skip Port Royal. While a public course obviously isn't going to be in quite the same condition year-round as an elite private club, it's in good condition, fun to play, reasonably challenging for the average golfer, and easily has the better views of the two courses. Not to mention the team there is beyond hospitable. While I didn't rent clubs myself, the rentals I saw looked absolutely playable. All the courses I play in my area are bermuda throughout, so the grass type wasn't an issue to me.

 

I've played both, and I would pick Port Royal over MOC if I could only played one. Seriously, don't skip it.

Vallygolf! Great feedback, thanks, for sharing. We will be cruising and arriving at the Royal Naval Dockyard. So. Port Royal makes sense. It is good to know that PR is not terrible! Good to know about the rentals too. You can't always trust google, trip advisor reviews.

A little travel hack for you.  Look at a satellite of the course.  On the very south/east border of the course there is a small path leading to a very secluded and beautiful beach.  I have been there tons of times with the family and never seen another individual.... well now the internet knows, but I have no plans to return in the near future:)

You won't regret it. The views from the green of 7 on just can't be missed.
