New unverified member wants to buy

I received a DM from a brand new member on an item I have listed.  They are unverified and were “brand new” members within couple hours of wanting to buy my item.  The item, Toulon Garage Latrobe, is not a common, high demand putter.  Other than obvious precautions, would you attempt to consummate this deal or ignore.  As of this morning, this member is still unverified.  Other than that, nothing terribly alarming in the communication so far.  I was just concerned it was a previous member with dodgy feedback looking for a fresh start.

More of an issue with unverified sellers than buyers IMO but ultimately you are the one selling and getting the money. These days with PP, buyers AND sellers can both screw each other equally or at least create hassle.

 

Since the Latrobe is a niche putter as you said someone could be looking for one that isnt a member here and it came up in a search.

As long as the member has a verified shipping address in PayPal I don't see the downside to it.

Unverified just means a new member on this site but they can already have a Paypal account available. As long as it's PayPal G&S I don't see anything wrong with how new he is. It's not correlated.

Buyer bailed when I asked for PayPal G&S.  (Said they decided to buy elsewhere)

I haven't had issues with unverified members but never had a situation where they joined same day. Definitely strange that they bailed.

what was the initial method of payment? isn't g&s the standard?

Yes.  I wonder if the buyer was planning to complete the transaction and then file some bogus claim (broken item, empty box, or other garbage).

Or maybe he did find what he wanted elsewhere

Seems like if he was planning something shady, he would have just paid and then done what you said.

I don’t think it was a scam, just a buyer unfamiliar with the process.  (Forum, PayPal etc.). He did find the listing via a google search for a Toulon Latrobe.  He did say he had cash, but I am in a different State, so probably better for all if he found the item closer to his home.

Other thing that I think about is that we all started off as a first-time buyer and/or seller.  I understand more scams now but new folks in the forum, as long as they are contributing thru posts and not just using it to buy/sell, they need to be given a chance.  I've sold to new buyers in the past and it's gone fine.  PayPal G&S adds to the comfort level, although not perfect.
