Rethinking the whole bag

CozBMB

Recommended Posts

I’m sitting in an airport rethinking my entire bag.  I play Mp 32’s with dg s300’s, 6x in driver.  I played with rental clubs yesterday in CA with reg flex in everything.  Paradym X 10.5 with a Ventus 5r.  Irons were Callaway Rogue ST Max OS with reg flex and insane amounts offset.  I almost laughed when I saw the setup but ended up playing a great round.  It makes no sense.  Has anyone ever had this happen?  I’m lost and tempted to buy SGI irons with reg flex 85 gram shafts!

When getting back into golf, my pro told me, "golf is hard, don't make any harder.". Then she handed me Paradyms and 923 Hot Metals (I was lusting over T100s and Apex Pros).  The players distance shovels are so easy to hit.

I play with a bunch of savages who are still hanging on to their worm burner 3irons and I'm over here dropping 7woods and hybrids out of the sky.  5cap fwiw.

I'm going heavier and stiffer in everything but that's just because the rust has been leaving my game.  I didn't play for 15 years before getting back last year.

Started back with some 90grammers.  When I was doing my second fitting last fall, I tested as heavy/stiff as I could manage, which were $tapers in stiff @125grm. Anything heavier was poop.

Then I backed it down to Modus 105 cause it gave me good numbers (prefer moon balls).  Also they're just easy and mellow to swing and there's no point hitting redlined 8irons.

You are far from the first to experience this with rental clubs. IMO the learning here is not that you played well with these clubs because they were lighter or less stiff, but rather because they were a *matched set*, and required closer to a single swing mechanic to hit them consistently.

You essentially hit what TrueSpec golf attempt's to attain through their fitting and club building system.

I wouldn’t be concerned with flex, club offset,  or club type; shaft weight is the actual key.
Find an ideal match and you can hit and succeed with almost anything.

I’ve noticed that when in a similar situations  play “looser” because there is less pressure. Can always chalk it up to “not my normal clubs” if I dont play well. That attitude sometimes is what makes the difference….orrrr buy a new

set and see what happens. Can always resell them and make some of the $$ back.

Let us know if you end up with a new set 👍👍

Kinda in the same boat.  In the middle of a complete bag overhaul after 20 years of random pickups.  Was fitted into i530s and a tsr3.  Rented some M6's on a vacay recently and hit them really well.  Kinda kicked me in the teeth.  Was ready to drop the dough on the latest and greatest and now I'm thinking I'll save a few bucks, get something good from a generation or two ago, and spend the rest on lessons

I'm not sure about you, but I'm generally an x flex but at an age where that might start to drift a bit.  On the flip side of that, I just started speed training.

I'm all over the place.

I'm a 9 handicap who is in the process of putting Cleveland Halo XL irons into my bag with 70g shafts.  They're just so easy to hit.  I just need solve one little gapping issue with my GW and they'll be in the bag.  They'll be replacing my Apex DCB's which I also hit well - but not as easily as these Halo's.

Would this be a good reason to have a full bag fitting, to better match everything to one swing?

Instead of bringing your "A game" swing to separate fittings.  This almost never happens when you play a round of golf.

There's a reason why most golf professionals prefer to err on the side of soft shafts and more forgiveness when recommending equipment. A shaft that's easier to load works great when your swing isn't firing on all cylinders and sequencing isn't perfect. More forgiving clubs clearly have an advantage when contact isn't quite perfect as well.

The real lesson is that as long as equipment works *reasonably well* for you and your game, it won't be the limiting factor in scores.

Yes, if done correctly. IMO single club-type fitting has little more chance of long term success than just picking by stated flex and weight. If you hit fifty 7 irons in a row, any decent player can hit any model 7 iron. Driver fitting is similar, with distance being the determining factor.

There are alternatives. Bringing your entire bag to a fitting maybe the easiest. Trying to hit your S400 gap wedge after the 40 gram R driver shaft you were just fitted to can be illuminating.
