.370 Graphite into Ping ISI…Ream or Sand?

Starting a new project although I’ve found a bit of info regarding the subject, I thought I’d solicit some new information from you all.

 

Building myself a set of Ping ISI BeCu irons and want to use a set of Mitsubishi OT i95 shafts in the heads.  I’ve read that some say to ream the heads to use parallel tip graphite shafts while others say to just sand down the tip of the shaft since the Ping ISI hosel bore is a bit larger than .355 but smaller than .370.

 

Just curious if anyone here tried either method and in hindsight wished they’d gone the other direction.

 

FWIW, the heads while very nice, are not a matching serial # set, so I wouldn’t feel any guilt reaming his set.

sand the shafts its an  easy job and  if it doesn't work or you just want to reshaft  the ping original  design is not changed

In the end, it doesn't really matter from a functional sense.  it's just a matter of different tools and different efforts during the build.

 

But that said, I sanded the shafts when I reshafted my i5's a while back.  But the shafts weren't parallel, even standard taper tip shafts need to be reshaped to get a good fit in a Ping hosel (IMO - I know others feel differently).   It was such a pain - so I'd have to say next time I'd choose to ream the hosel to parallel - even if working with taper tip shafts.  I'd much rather use a shim on a taper tip shaft into a nice, properly parallel hosel bore than try to work with that funky hosel bore taper Ping uses.

 

But for full disclosure - the Ping hosel bore taper is a big pet peeve of mine.   I love their woods/hybrids but I don't have any plans currently to work with their irons again.

It won't take a whole lot of sanding to get a .370 into those hosels.  Realize, though, that at the very bottom, the hosel necks down sharply.  When using .355 shafts in those heads, you have to pound the shaft into the head to get it to bottom.  With graphite, it just takes a small bit of extra grinding, over the last 1/4" of the tip, then the shaft will reach the bottom without brute force required.
