2024 Goals - Go from 12 to 8

Setting this up for my own use and hope it helps others. Appreciate any tips, inputs, commentary - I welcome all feedback.

 

Like probably many here, I've played golf my entire life starting young. More so during single life than nowadays with kids. I grew up near a golf course and have a few great golfers in the family. Their swings are remarkably better than mine and always have been but hoping thats not a bridge too far for much longer. We all grew up playing together on a public course and I've got that "itch" again. Deep.

 

For the past decade due to life, work, or otherwise I just haven't played nor practiced enough. I enjoy golf, more so now than ever, I hit bad shots as much as anyone and laugh about it. I started so early that the fundamentals are there still but it has unfortunately also never led me down the path I'm on now - taking it seriously, far more than just a hobby which may be where many of you are also. 

 

Nowadays, I want to see if I can get back to when I was a single digit handicap or be even better - play the best golf of my life.

 

Past

For a number of reasons, over the past decade I've played less than 10 rounds a year. The lowest GHIN I've posted in that time that is reliable was last year. Then, I played the most rounds since getting married over a decade ago and finished the season at a 10.4. Plenty of good and bad, but overall I would say that I far out-kicked my coverage now that I have found some of my weaknesses.

 

Current

I think, I think, I've figured out my bad tendencies thanks to some massive help from a few exceptional friends and am on the way to sorting out my swing and game again. Its likely a never ending path ofcourse but one I'm excited to see where it ends up. A long stint in Mens Baseball/Softball and other things certainly hasn't helped my over the top but am working on correcting it daily. I'm steep (-4AoA) but am consistent in my contact however its going to take a long time to sort out. That being said, although I used to have my steep angle figured out (aim left and expect it) and was a great driver of the ball - today I can't hit a Driver to save my life which I'm desperately working on. I will say however, I can putt pretty well most days if I could ever hit a friggin' green which has me now focusing on my 150y and in close game. I've already played 10+ rounds this year, fortunately with a few great rounds mixed in with plenty of bad ones that has spiked my GHIN to 11.8.

 

The "GamePlan"

1. If I want to play the best golf I can - I need to practice and play often. I'm hitting the range 3x a week with specific goals for each session and working on fundamentals at home every day.

2. Often = As much as humanly possible. I'm finally building our unfinished garage into a golf simulator = big job, on the cheap, doing the best we can with what we've got

3. Yes. Someone invites me to play, first response is yes, then I figure it out.

4. I want my young kids to play and have a similar experience as much as I can afford. I've been taking them with me and its crazy to see how after just a few sessions how much better they've gotten.

5. Coachability - No ego. There are some insanely good golfers around and I'm happy to listen.

 

Will keep this updated atleast once per month. Have a bunch of rounds, trips, and tournaments lined up this year.
