The Best Older Anser Putter Head

Great thread on the newer heads of this classic putter, which begs the question: What is the best older Anser putter head. That could be any model prior to the PLDs and some of the milled versions.

That is a kind of difficult question - as I kind of feel like the big differentiating factor in the Ansers is the hosel/shaft - but I am only up to the G5i in my current trials. Not a big fan on the feel off the insert on that one. For me - coming from playing an MgBrz P.O. 9990 Anser - I feel more comfortable with the MgBrz heads and I really love my Scottsdale classic in MgBrz. Got a Beni Scottsdale to match my ISIs which is very pretty but I have a tendency to blast it past the hole outside of about 6 feet. The MgBrz Anser 5bz is fun because it feels like it gets a little extra boost from the shaft. Haven’t found a becu one to my liking - but it’s on the wishlist.  Any recommendations for others to try out as I move past the early 2000s?

Very subjective obviously. My favourite other than BeCu Anser 2s and 5s is this beauty.

 

Firm feel off the face and an early tungsten-weighted, industrial look. Only downside is that they pick up dings quite easily.

It arrived - and I am trying not to get emotional about how great this putter feels - and be objective. 
 

The milling is still pretty sharp on the (not Ti) face - and it has a nice weight that feels to me between the mgbrz Scottsdale and the Beni. I can really comfortably hit a repeatable straight back and forth stroke with it, and control the speed into the cup by front or back half on the practice mat more so than not.

Had some rust bubbling under the fill paint of the logo and at the base of the backplate - so I cleaned it up with barkeeps friend and acetone and good old emery sponges - and I think it’s going to be my gamer. 
 

It has a ping man rubber grip I am not sure is original or not - and I have a pp58 cord grip laying around. Probably won’t switch though for fear of messing up whatever weird balance it has now.

No idea why I'd remember but I'm pretty confident that original standard grip was the Ping wrap. I saw these at that golf course just off the strip in Vegas before it got torn down.

Just keep grip weight the same or very close when changing putter grips.  
 

Nice find to add to your collection.  Weird that there was rust. Manganese Bronze doesn’t rust.

The head on there is stainless - the Ti refers to the hosel. Sadly, as far as I know, they were never released in mgbrz.

 I added a new grip when the old one started sublimating into black powder - found one a little bigger with an almost matching blue.

I have had so many Ansers, the Redwood is my favorite, the vault was a close 2nd.

I missed out on one of these a few weeks ago at a used sporting goods store here. They only wanted $30.00. I went to the course to hit some balls, when I got back, it had been sold. These are somewhat rare and often sell for well over $150.

I am a fan of the Anniversary version of the Scottsdales, the numbered ones.   I have one in my shop and love to take it out and roll it.  The weight is not an issue and it sort of turns back the clock, for me.

I've got a BeNi version in the shop, somewhere and I like it a lot, just not more than the numbered model.

The only Anser that spent some time in my bag was the original dalehead rocker sole from the late 60s. I'm more of a My Day fan.
