Golf grip CRISIS interlock/overlap

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

This might be silly, but i'm really struggling with which grip to use at the moment.

I started with Interlock in my early days, switched to Overlap for several years and now back to Interlock/Overlap can't decide.

I have never hit a fade/slice in my life.

Interlock: I feel my Driver is on autopilot, which is great. However, I struggle with hitting a draw with my woods and irons, which I can't for the life of me - coming a bit over the top = resulting in a push fade/slice with my irons/woods

I also feel the Interlock frees me up and I can just really swing freely.

Downside is I can't hit a draw and don't have as much control over the clubface

Overlap: I'm really pulling the s*** of of my driver and irons, when i hit a good one however it's a lovely little draw.

I also feel less freely and stiff with the overlap, even if I try to use a lighter grip pressure. It gets very armsy/handsy.

Pro is my wedges inside 100yards is DIALED because my clubface control is much better.

Changing grip midround is really not ideal for my scores.

I'm a 16 handicap was once a 6, but got 2 kids and haven't played for 3 years. It's getting really frustrating.

I feel like the interlock is better for my swing right now, but I can't hit my irons. Do I maybe need to apply greater grip pressure when at impact as my grip with interlock is like 3/10 grip pressure and losing clubface control.

Anyone have had a similar issues before? What do I commit to and why?

Any advice really apprechiated.

Thanks.

Pros grip the club much tighter than ams overall - you’d probably be amazed at the difference. The real difference is that they can grip harder because of hand strength, but that tension isn’t translated into arm tension, if that makes sense.

Whether it’s one or the other makes no difference, but you have to have a secure, neutral grip that remains secure at the end of the swing.

Don’t try and actively grip harder through impact - that happens anyway.

The strong likelihood is that you’re focusing on the wrong thing. Post a swing so we can guide you to the biggest issue.

That's a great point thanks, I was researching the same just right now. Wide takeaway, right hand more on top mayb, and draw swing + more grip pressure.

Please for the love of all that is holy, do not use a wide takeaway. That advice should be thrown in the sea. Please don’t just take advice from completely random sources that isn’t specific to your swing when you don’t understand the mechanics of a good swing - that’s the path to endless frustration and terrible golf that most players end up on.

The only way to really improve is to measure/record what you’re doing now and then be guided to perform one of the moves that currently cause you trouble correctly. Then you work to integrate that move before being guided on whatever the next most important correction is.

There’s no shortcut and no bandaid.

That would get my clubface in a good position at the top I believe. As well you can see from my swing that my arms kinda fold.

Swing here attached with Interlock+Driver.

Your grip is not your primary problem. Your primary problem is that your arm swing is going around your body instead of staying out and in front of it. This misunderstanding of how the arms work is getting you far, far too deep. It's the classic in, up and out of sync move. You then have no choice but to go over the top to get to the ball. There's lower body stuff going on too, but I feel that your arm swing is the most important issue here.

Thanks yes that's a problem I have had for a long time. Do you have a drill for this perhaps? Or just like focus on taking the club back more out in front of me?

I would recommend getting this... Hugely helpful thread on the forums too.

Just purchased this, already watched a few and will have some to get to work with. Thanks again

Your first goal should be to get to left arm parallel correctly. You will probably need to add some wall drill to correct your hip action too, but it’s worth seeing what happens when you can get to P3 (left arm parallel) correctly first.

Don’t rush to full swings - integration will be much better if you don’t rush. P3 swings with cast b. Lots of mirror work and slow motion swings.
