Ranking the Majors

Rank them for what? Enjoyable to watch? Quality of winners? Well run events? Good courses? Lee Jansen, Andy north. Graeme McDowell, Bill Rogers, Steve Jones are not exactly your banner boys for prestige so the US Open ranks low for quality of winners. The Masters is probably the best to attend and watch. The PGa is kind of meh but I quite like it. The Open has the most mystique and history and is definitely fun. So for me its

The Open

Masters

Masters. Exclusive and pristine. Winner gets permanent invite.

US open. Our national championship.

British. Classic roots.

PGA. Step above signature events.

I like the US open setups when it’s tough for the pros to break par with gnarly rough and hard greens. Good to see the best struggle.

Honestly if we get another good finish tomorrow, the US Open will overtake the Masters for me. I think the USGA has found the right formula for a challenging yet exciting test. The last 3 US Opens have been absolute bangers from a set up/drama standpoint and I hope we get more of the same tomorrow. The Masters on the other hand has had some pretty boring finishes in recent years. 2020-22 were super boring and even the back nine this year was uncompetitive

It's ahead of the Masters for me.  Why?  It's played at a diverse set of golf courses that are 100% maximized.  Augusta is still presented like a time warp from the 80's.  Sorry AN but it's true.  Some of those ponds like 11 and 15 are abhorrent.  Restore the creeks.  Also the bunker shapes are an insult to Alister MacKenzie.  US Open > Masters until they fix their course.

people always commenting about the pga being last ... something has to be last ... doesn't mean it's not a great tournament ...

Open by far, actually ...

great pt made by dj on nlu's evening program: the pristine conditions of augusta and the masters as the first major, continuing through the majors, to the randomness of quite a few things - but equally dependent on "golfing your ball" - as the the last major ... favorite major, and this one's been fantastic, imo ...

American here :

1) The Open

2) US Open

3) PGA Championship

4) Masters

The Open would get the nod on Age alone but also for the historical courses. The look like a cow pasture but there is the sheer beauty of the landscape, the fans, history of the game, and the streakers… just a great Open. They also don’t really care if the score goes low but I don’t think it’s getting there this year.

The US Open has history older than the last two but they do try to protect par, sometimes not correctly but this year solid A.

PGA Championship plays excellent courses and the field is super strong.
The Masters is played on a great golf course but its limited field puts it at the bottom. It gets its hype being the first. Love it.

If they added another major, the Australian Open should be it.

Troon this week is showing why the Open is the best major IMO. When we get some proper weather as well as a good, tough set up, it's the most severe test in golf because it demands the widest variety of shots.

Top players trying to hit their usual power fade every time, on every shot, have been found out.  They also can't get away with hitting every shot high in the air.  And best of all, they have no automatic right to be presented with par 5s which they can hit in 2 with a mid to short iron.

Edit: in round 3, they couldn't even reach the par 4s on the back 9 in 2. It was glorious viewing.

Just shows what a well-designed Penal golf course can do to the bomb and gouge crowd. It's not rocket science. At Royal Troon you must hit golf shots. You must keep the golf ball in front of you, wayward shot is severely penalized as they should be.

The bombers were booking flights after the first two rounds..... while the shot makers contended on Sunday.

1)The British Open or Open Championship is the king of Opens and it rules Majors.  History, tracks, the fans and playing in the country where it all started, with all its color and peculiarities.  There's nothing to match this combo.

2)The Masters is a show per se.  Often the most dramatic definition in Major golf, especially because viewers know the course by heart.  And the telecast is almost flawless.

3)The US Open is as fair as the Open Championship in which anybody can play a qually and advance to the tournament.  This is the most valuable quality of a true Open tournament in golf.  And it's the ultimate test for skill, patience and resilience in golf.  Perhaps not the most attractive to watch because you see more bad shots than you expect at such a high level of golf.

4)The PGA Championship is the major with less appeal, even more now that they changed the date.  I think some of the venues are pretty vanilla.  The reputation of this tournament is hard to change, indeed.  But it's a Major so every pro golfer wants it in their resume.

It was the elements that caused the variety.  Spieth hit a 407 yard drive when it wasn't cold and windy.  It makes me excited to roll equipment back and bring more variety to the pro game.  Bomb and gouge is insanely boring.
