Match play chaos

Stay with  me on this one, it's a little hard to follow but I'm really interested in suggestions on how this should be handled.

 

In a match play bracket tournament, after a qualifying round, it is announced, that player A, the 2 seed, will play the 7 seed, player B, and player C, the 3 seed, will play the 6 seed, player D, in the first round, which is in two weeks. All four players are assigned the same tee time.

 

When the players check in at the first tee, on the day of the first round, a pre-printed score card is handed out for each match, and the players are told player A's match is with player player C, and player B's match is with player D. The players do not question this change from the original information and the matches are played. A defeats C 8 and 7, and D defeats B 4 and 3.

 

After the matches are complete the players question each other about their seeding and determine the matches were incorrectly assigned and bring this to the committees attention.

 

Do the games stand as played and the winners advance, or are these games voided and replayed per the original seeding at some future date?

Is there a rule or decision that covers this situation, or is it simply up to the committee to decide?

What a fantastic scenario.

 

I don't know of or have seen any ruling on this.  Although, there could be some application that the players can determine the ruling....but I am not sure this is really a "ruling".

 

In other worlds (chess, cards), this could be considered not showing up for your match and thus DQ.

 

It could also be a DQ if interpreted as not playing the (correct) match in the required time.  Although, that means they could have technically gone out the next day and played the match to meet the requirement.

 

I am guessing the committee would have to decide btw the 2 choices.

I guess I wasn't clear, the committee assigned the matches (incorrectly), and handed us the scorecards at the first tee, then admitted, and apologized for their mistake after the matches were complete.

 

I might as well tell you they decided to replay the matches correctly at a later date. I'm just curious what others thoght would have been the best way to handle this.

Ahh....That was a key piece of info.  I was thinking it was the course (as lots of times the course makes the cards/carts/etc for an event).

 

Being it was the comms. mistake - yeah, def replay.

 

Side question though - why did none of the 4 competitors challenge the pairings upon first seeing them?  That seems odd to me.

I am player D, the 6 seed, and I can't speak for the others, but I wish I had said something. I thought they must have re-seeded the event or something, I figured they knew what they were doing.

Well...awesome story!  You had me go down the rabbit hole.

 

There were many instances in chess or Magic events where similar happened.  Boy...did I go down the rabbit hole.
