Nefyn Golf Club in Wales… Worth the drive?

I just saw a video on Nefyn Golf Club. I’m going to Liverpool for 10 days on a golf trip next fall. It looks like it has amazing views. Is it work the 2.5hr drive from Liverpool?

I don’t think so, especially given the number of great courses that are closer to you. That said, if you go all out and play the peninsula holes then jump over to Porthmadog’s back nine, that would be well worth your effort.

Thanks, we are playing many of the great ones in Lancs but I was considering going over a day or two early and playing some on the hidden gems. Nefyn looks like a great piece of land, just wasn’t sure how the design was.

Bull Bay on Anglesey is a better bet. Lovely Fowler course with nice views. Mind you you, Delamere Forest, Sandiway and Prestbury are all in Cheshire and better. Not as pretty, but cool courses.

Good course…solid. Not much greatness, but a few highlights. I am not a fan of the gorse holes. Worth playing once if the price is right and it’s convenient. If you go there try to stay in town and walk the castle walls.

Interesting discussion. I am thinking of a Wales Only trip next year. If I had 12 courses to pick these are my first lot:

R Porthcawl

Pennard

Southerndown

Pyle and Kenfig

Tenby

Aberdovey

R St David

Nefyn

Porthmadog

Bull Bay

Conwy

Machynys

i just feel Welsh golf is a bit neglected and would love a little golfing holiday to get to know it a bit.

Any comments on this rota.? I have left off Celtic Manor which seems a bit resorty to me. I prefer the more classic courses.

And would April or May be ok weather wise especially course conditions.?

You may want to consider Clyne. It’s just down the road from Pennard and a good course. Very natural in style on common land with sheep about the place. 
 

They are a bit of a drive from Tenby, but Cardigan and St David’s City are lovely courses. Tenby is great town to use as a base for southwest Wales. In fact, St David’s City may be the furthest westerly course in Wales. A few pix of SDC and the cathedral.

Yer welcome. I haven’t played it, but West Monmouthshire is very much on my radar and short list of courses to play.

BUT, if you are putting together an entire Welsh itinerary it should include Welshpool! Just one pic. If this doesn’t convince you nothing will.

I will certainly also go to play Cardigan. Those of us from Aust/NZ might recall a fabulous harness race horse called Cardigan Bay who won the Inter Dominion back in the day. Now I know the name came from a place in Wales.

Yeah, I think I’m going to fly in a couple days early play Nefyn and Conwy before the rest of the group arrives.

Well if you do manage to play Nefyn and Conwy, please let us know how you find them. I've played Royal St Davids last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. 

 

I'm always surprised that no one seems to offer a Links golf package across North Wales. There's stunning scenery, great courses, and compared to the NW England and Scotland the golf is surprisingly cheap. (North Wales Links and Conwy are about an hour away from Wallasey/Hoylake and you can probably play them both for less than one round at either).

I actually prefer N Wales to Conwy and Nefyn. There are some dud holes for sure, but some stunners as well. I also like its authentic links scruffiness.
