Can we just be honest about Modus shafts?

Im always amazed that anybody involved with golf/ repair  or supply pays full.price.Golfworks used to give me trade prices but then raised the yearly amount required to qualify

Im.overseas and get good discounts off shafts grips etc without spending $$$

Wonder if the wrxs  could get together and open trade accounts with say Gw Tt kbs Golfpride etc?

I only build clubs for myself and friends, so I don't do enough volume to even worry about something like that. I would think that golf pride/KBS/TT would not want a public forum providing components below MSRP on a regular basis.

More like the part time guys forming a buying group with no publishing of  trade prices?

I really like Nippon , and I hit the Modus  105 - 115 and 120 really well.  In addition, the Nippon folks are very responsive to club builders. If you can make a Nippon shaft work, the price point is very good for a premium product.

True Temper/Project X , and FST/KBS also make very nice steel products.

Call it what you want, but I call 120x awesome.  I can’t keep them out of my irons year after year.  Keep trying to replace them but I need to stop fighting it.

You can tell me all day long about different bend profiles, etc.  What I know is the ball hits the same flight window, feels great and gives me consistent numbers.

Agreed. They are the best iron shafts I have ever used. Kick myself for waiting so long for an iron fitting.

IMO when it comes to steel shafts, most Nippon steel shafts provide a softer/smoother feel for users; not comparable to DG, but maybe KBS Tour.   They are not a highly used shaft on the PGA or KF tour... but perhaps more users on the LPGA tour, and a lot of use in Asian markets.

Nippon is a fine shaft, and it was wise to bring them to the US as their popularly has grown.  It's as if Nippon found a way to build in or disguise vibration dampening.  If it weren't for father time, I'd be playing Tour130S

Do you find the 120S to be a lot different than 120X? As a lefty I don't get a lot of demo ops, and I've only hit the 120S. Was too light at 114 (not surprising) but even worse was the wacky bend lower in the shaft just before impact....no way I could time that, no reason to want to even. I've heard some say that the 120X gets the weight closer to 120 while more importantly imo gets rid of the weird bend profile kink.

I had a lot of pulls with the 120s but that’s just my experience.  They feel very similar, just a touch tighter but still very smooth.  The total static weight of the build just felt better to me with 120x.  I know it’s not much difference, but the build I had just worked.

Im just questioning what all the hype is about, I dont care what other people play. When I say "dressed up" I mean a somewhat exaggerated bend profile of an existing and popular shaft. WRT Tour 120, PX LZ would be most similar ... actually, quite similar, it's just that the softer mid section isn't as long.

It's just a golf shaft.  There is only so much manufacturers can do to create something "unique".  And who says every shaft needs to be unique?  Most people do just fine with a medium flex profile shaft.  Nothing unique what so ever, and that's fine.

I’d love to hear JD3’s thoughts on putter design….

I was fit for and play Modus 130X and it's is by far the best shaft I have ever played (and I've played a lot of them.) I had never  hit any of them until my fitter suggested it for my T100 and I can't imagine using anything else. Feel is great, spin is perfect, launch is what I needed. The wedge shafts are good, too. I don't think I've seen much hype around them, just a good option for someone that fits the profile like myself.

After many years of DG, PX, KBS, and even a pleasant Sensicore set, I decided to finally give Modus a try after seeing so many good golfers playing them in Japan.  Tested 105 & 115, and they were kinda harsh, but the 120 S shafts were uniquely  smooth & consistent to me in the ZX5/ZX7 combo set.

I always love the comments on the creation of the Tour Issue Dynamic gold. Weight sorted same shafts for $30 more a pop. Not much creation. For the record I just shafted two sets of irons with dynamic gold non tour issue. Biggest margin of variance was 1 gram in all the shafts

I have an uncut, unusued set of DG X100 with Sensicore in a box. They are not the Tour Issue version either  The set is 9 shafts ranging from 39.5 - 35.5.  the entire set deviates 2 grams total, meaning no shaft is more than 1 gram off the set weight. IIRC, most were at 122 grams (it may have been 124) with 1-2 shafts being off that weight.

Same. I just try and find used options and buy new on things that wear out or get destroyed, like grips and ferrules.

Personally the Tour120TX doesn't feel as tip heavy as the DG X7's to me.  For my swing at least they are not interchangeable, I feel I release the X7's earlier which adds more dynamic loft which you would think would be the opposite seeing how they are heavier but its how my body reacts to the minor difference in how the shafts feel.

I'm assuming you will get push back on this post just due to each persons feel being their own, one aspect of a shaft that doesn't quite feel like there is much of a difference to you may be the key difference in a shaft another person is looking for.

It's not always how the shaft reacts to your swing but how your swing reacts to the feel of the shaft.

"Tour weight" with a softer tip to help with launch. I have always been a low ball hitter with my irons but don't like light weight shafts. Best of both, I have really enjoyed them...helps with launch but doesn't spin too much.

Imo this is the only Modus really worth the hype...many wanted a heavier shaft for the weight, but not a low launch like an S300-400, or the "harshness" of a PX or X100. Still though that profile will only fit a small sub segment of players who don't mind the large discrepancy between handle and tip stiffness. The rest of the modus line imo are just unnecessary tweaks to time proven models or weird EI curves that didn't exist because they're not good fits for anyone.

Modus 120TX is quite a bit softer than X7.  The closest analogue is DGX100, and even there, the Modus is softer.  If memory serves its between DGS400 and DGX100.

Why so much energy spent with this attack ad theme?  You're starting to sound like the Satanic-Panic-era crusade against rock music.

Modus 120 doesn't suit you.  That's fine.  7-8 years ago, it didn't suit me, either (though it does now, Father Time wins again).  Doesn't make it "weird."

120S is a dead ringer for DGR.  The 120 drifts farther from DG as you go stiffer.  The 125 is closer to DG.  The 115 is a lighter weight version of 125 for those who prefer that.  The 105 is lighter yet, and a flex softer.   The 130 is completely different, almost the exact opposite of the 120.

It's pretty straightforward

I have an old razor thin Honma 5 iron that I picked up for a few bucks to sometimes practise with. It has an NS Pro 950 GH in it. It really is a proper innovation because as a lighter weight shaft, it still retains good feel and stoutness. It's really a pleasure to hit, better than any Modus I ever tried.

Did a blindtest some day ago.

Playing AMT W X100

I have been playing Modus 120 and 130 - both nice but not that great.

Allways wanted to like 105 but it has been a ”hate it” shaft

So I got to try 105 in Srixon ZX7 glued 7i and P with 105S and 105X straight in- all things equal (L/L/L SW etc)

I know shafts are the tempo part in a club

4 clubs all, all with tape to hide the logo, 25 with each and in Trackman

I found my new shaft, since I want to go lighter.

105S: harsh, stout, 7-8 yds shorter than my ZX7/AMT low spin - felt very X to me

105X: Soft, 8-9 yds longer than my ZX7/AMT, perfect spin - felt like R300 just a nice feel

And I guessed totally wrong - so much for that touch in my hands😂

105X who I thought would be even stouter were just the opposite.

Rebuilding my irons now and I am thinking about try them in my wedges aswell

I've noticed that phenomenom sometimes myself too with X having more feel than S. But more often with graphite like an MMT where the weight different was significant (at least +5 grams.) imo the Modus 105S is just unhittable; light, no feel, super stiff with very high bend point. Didn't hit the X but from what you say sounds better in a counter intuitive way

I’ve played a lot of DG in the last 10 years, but never the full tour weight versions other than in my wedges. A couple years ago I played Modus 120X in some MP225s, and I hated them. It could have been that the Swingweight was way too light. But also when I sold those shafts I found out that they were soft stepped without my knowledge. So that could have been part of it. As I’ve tested more and more shafts recently, I have figured out that I just don’t like the feel of DG.

Shafts I DO like the feel of are PX6.0, KBS Tour S, CTaper Lite X, Modus 115S, and Modus 130S. I know they’re very different, but all of them I like. I know Modus 115 is supposed to resemble the DG profile, but in practice I don’t get the exact same sensation.

I just got a Cally Apex CB 7iron with Modus 130S, midsize MCC Align set to D5 Swingweight. So overall relatively “heavy.” Although I don’t know that I would say it felt all that heavy. I really liked the feel and the ball flight. I did see that it launched pretty quickly, even with range balls that tend to fly lower. Spin looked controlled, best I could tell without numbers. I enjoyed it. Especially because I am someone who could use some extra height even though I have decent speed (90mph 7i).
