Titleist GT more forgiving?

rwhitlock

Recommended Posts

With the latest 10k buzz, does anyone know if the new GT line (thinking maybe the 2?) will be more forgiving?

I’m currently gaming the Ping 10k driver but have always been a Titleist fan.  I hit more consistent drives with the Ping, but really prefer the looks and sound of the Titleist.

I guess i’m just hoping they’re more forgiving so I can justify buying one..

Nobody can assess that because nobody other than tour ambassadors have access to the new GT line.  I play TSR2 10' and can't imagine new GT -2 version being more forgiving and longer than mine.  Didn't notice any WOW watching Homa spanking it in the Open.

I doubt Titleist will ever build a FORGIVING wood comparable to Ping.

The new Titleist GT 2/3/4 models are built for the masses, not your typical WRXer who, with the standard 210 mph ballspeed, would crush the face of any standard model.

Have to wait for the GT 5 to be released for the WRX crowd. That will come with a sold titanium head and 1/4" rebar with titanium prepeg for a shaft.

I dont think the titanium shaft can handle my aggressive transition though, they need to develop something sturdier.

The TS2 was the first Titleist driver with a horizontal MOI over 5000 (barely). Marketing for the TSi line mentioned a 5% increase putting the TSi2 around 5300. The TSr2 then saw that drop below 5000 in favor of prioritizing aerodynamics and ball speed. Given their recent emphasis on aerodynamics, it would be fair to bet that the GT line will be well short of 10K combined MOI.

Can't remember when but in some Titleist marketing video or interview from the past they talked about MOI and said that they could max it out if they wanted to but their research showed that max moi actually causes people to swing slower. Not sure if that is still their philosophy, but I'd guess it probably is.

I know that the GT is more forgiving than the TSR3, for me.  I also feel like the TSR3 isn't difficult to hit.  I had tighter groups and better numbers comparing GT2/3 to my TSR3 using the same shaft.  The GT also felt and sounded better than the TSR3.

I just got fitted for the GT yesterday and I have to say it is absolute fire! I came into the fitting convinced I was just going to get a GT4 and GT3 fairways with my Ventus Red TR set up and that would be it. Boy, I was wrong! I was fitted into a GT3 10-degree with a Tour AD VF 6x and a GT2 15-degree Tour AD IZ 7x. For the most part, I agree with the fit aside from the 3w. I am a lot more comfortable with a 16.5-head. I tried the GT4 first and after 3 hits that was AWFUL! The sound is similar to the OG TS and the feel was firm as hell. The GT3 on the other hand, had a much more muted sound compared to the current TSR line, and it's solid! The looks of the driver in person are much better compared to the pictures. The same can be said of the fairway woods. The one thing that caught my attention is how forgiving the GT3 is. I hit about 4 off the toe but the fact I was able to maintain 165 ballspeed with 295 carry is pretty impressive! The combo with the Tour AD VF is intriguing but moving from the Ventus family is hard haha! To those Tour AD VF/IZ users, what would be the Ventus equivalent to those two shafts? Thanks!

fwiw, I am a 5.5 cap who benefits immensely from playing a high MOI driver with 10+ degrees of loft. I have decent club head speed 109 or so but a slight negative AoA. Once I get to my 5 or 6 wood, that’s when I can use the loft as my forgiveness and start to focus on speed off the face. For that, I’ve found nothing better than the two recent Taylormade product. I have a qi10 tour at 20.4*. I’m able to put the weight forward and hit the ball over dem dere mountains.

I wanted to get some input on the surefit weighting. I was fitted for the GT3 driver and GT2 fairway. However, the length and weight I was fitted into was standard length for driver and 3w and -2g weight for both. My current driver plays at 44.75 and my 4w is 42.5. My question is with the driver being 0.75 in short and the 4w being 0.5 in shorter, what weight would you order? If the recommended weight for me was -2g at standard length of 45.5 (driver) and 43 (3w), which weight should I order, the black weight (+2, 11g) or the blue weight (+4, 13g)? Thanks very much everyone!

I was hitting the TSR2 with a HZRDUS Red shaft.  I just got fitted and went with the GT3 with a Graphic Design Tour AD UB6.  The club is very forgiving, mishits still got out there.

Just did a local fitting yesterday at my club. Tried out the gt2 and gt3 heads. Very traditional shapes like you would expect from Titleist. Had my gamer shaft (ventus blue) and tried out the AD VF. VF performed well but didn't like the feel of it so went back mainly into my gamer. Feel wise, they were very persimmon like. Like a dull, soft feeling but in a good way. Sound was also very muted. This came in both the 2 and 3. I think the most shocking aspect were mishits. Still achieving 165+ ball speed on low shots. I was able to get about 3 mph ball speed more than my current Qi10 LS at 170 with a peak height of around 140 ft on good shots. I ordered it on site. Glad to go back to team Titleist.

By just simple swing weight math, you'd need 7g since every 1/2" cut down would be 3 sw points (6g). You would need 9g to get back to the standard D4 then -2g. Although the math suggests this, it'll feel very different with the shorter shaft.

For those who have gone through a fitting, did they have any high balance point or counterbalanced shafts to try?

... Forgiveness is just so relative.  I was fit for the Qi10 Max (hitting indoors) and I think my fitter was influenced by my Stealth2 HD. It was terrible on the course and my dispersion was terrible. After several rounds I lost complete confidence in the Max and returned it for the Standard Qi10. I figured I would be selling it and going back to my S2 HD but it was instantly better. It didn't take long to find out it was much more forgiving for me and my slightly high and slightly toe miss was just as good as center contact. Turned out to be the best driver I have played while the "more forgiving" Max was one of the worst. So for me the 10k was a myth and while I have no doubt it is more forgiving for a robot, it wasn't for my swing. And even though it was just a demo fitting, the TSR3 was more accurate than the TSR2 when I hit them so for me the TSR3 was more forgiving.  I think you will just have to hit the GT's when they are released and see how they compare to your Ping 10k.

140 feet (46 yards) seems pretty high.  What was the launch, spin, and descent angle?

I currently have the Ping G430 10k paired with a Ventus TR Black, its good and forgiving but the driver naturally creates so much spin, I'm losing distance on both great strikes and mishits. The Titleist GT3 created more ball speed a smaller dispersion and still carried a decent distance on mishits without going too offline. I should be picking my GT3 today as its on the delivery truck! Looking forward to playing with it.
