Fujikura Axiom Breakage - HELP!!

JTK37

Recommended Posts

I had the same issue with Fujikura Pro iron shafts. I broke one per year, right at the hosel, like clockwork. It's why I moved away from them....I couldn't trust them with any swings, honestly.

Really sorry to hear that Axiom seems to suffer the same issue.

I had a set of Fujikura Pro irons that were pulled 3 times and used in 3 different sets of heads over 2 years. Never had a problem.

Whoever built the OP's clubs has no clue about what they are doing.

I’ve had Axioms since they were released. They were pulled from my New Level 902OS, then installed in a set of PXG Gen4 P irons, then pulled again and installed in a set of PXG Gen4 XP irons and have not had one shaft failure.

From looking at how much material was ground off on the broken shafts,  I would expect all of the original build will likely break.   I would at least demand an extended warranty on breakage.   Hopefully whoever built the first ones aren’t involved in replacements.  Over a year on mine with no issue other the great performance

Welp that didn’t last long. THREE shots. This is the 8-iron which was previously replaced.

Before going further I will say I’ve been very happy with Callaway’s responsiveness and exchanging of the clubs- providing brand new replacement rather than repairing. But, at this point it’s clear that they haven’t investigated the issue or corrected it. It’s Friday and I just want to relax, I’ll call them about this one probably Wednesday after their call volume decreases.

There are two things I’m seeing. First pics are the finish of the ferrule- it’s sloppy,  not in the way it was turned, but in the epoxy that’s there. Maybe nit picking but I’ve got these under a microscope at this point. Second is the break and the prep of the tip. I’m now certain the builder is removing waaaaayyy too much material and that’s why they keep breaking and splintering. This just reinforced the initial thoughts.

If anyone sees differently feel free to throw your ideas out there

Already been said earlier, but the person/people prepping these shafts is going overboard.  They're unnecessarily removing part of the shaft in the prep process, damaging shaft integrity.  No wonder they're breaking.

They should not be removing any material anywhere near the ferrule. And there should not be a step where the prep starts. The builder is a hack, that knows nothing about building clubs.

When I’ve been able to hit them I LOVE them. Feel is excellent, but the ball flight is even better. Just extremely consistent- probably more so than my usual DGX100s, and waaay less punishing on a little thin miss.

I really want to get this addressed so I can stick with them. It’s not the shafts that are the issue

Hope Callaway can figure it out. Maybe they can order a taper set from Fujikura, or worst case have them drive down the road to Fujikura and have Andrew build them for you…..

It’s mind boggling to me that they haven’t figured this out. This is, without a shadow of a doubt, an issue with how they’re being built. I’ve been watching this thread from the sidelines, and I can’t believe they still keep removing so much material.

Agreed, I mean at what point do they figure out that their installation process is wrong, OR figure out they can just order taper tip sets. 🤦‍♂️

I am kinda bummed that I saw this thread when I did. I know the shafts are fine and this is a build error but the round I played with my Axioms the day after reading this thread mentally effected me lol. I was scared to take a divot. A range session afterwards purposely being steeper than usual got that unwarranted fear out of my head.

After this happening to OP's clubs after being replaced multiple times, I can't believe @Fujikura Golf hasn't reached out to Callaway regarding how they are building with these shafts. Also what doesn't make sense to me is I'm sure they don't do this for other Parallel shafts they build with so why are they doing this with the Axioms.

Fujikura and UST prep their taper tip shafts the same way. The prep isn't abnormal for what most manufacturers and builders do. If there's a tip weight there, that's likely what caused the break. The tip weight creates the pinch point. Brass doesn't flex as easy as graphite.

It's 100% abnormal, and is 100% the cause of the breakage.

And there's no tip weight, you can see excess epoxy in the center.

That’s not correct. Essentially what the assembler at Callaway did was to sand the shaft to make it a unitized .355 shaft by removing WAY too much material that creates a stress point at the hosel since the shaft has no taper. That is not the process that Fujikura, UST, and reputable club builders use to prep shafts.

My taper tip axioms came unprepped meaning there was no sanding or material removed. This is a build issue where the builder has removed way to much.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just had a Paradym AI Smoke 7 iron break at the hosel. Callaway built the set six weeks ago so there was limited mileage on the club. While they are going to replace, the Axiom 125 is backordered and not expected in until mid-September. That's disappointing as is the prospect I'll have other shafts from the set also break based on the information within this thread.

THIS. The countersinking is so important. A lot of the shelves OEMs leave in hosels are sharp enough to just snap the graphite at the right impact angle.

The other thing to note is Callaway's use of tip weights. I am positive if you look at the piece of shaft inside of the hosel, the tip weight is either flush or near flush where it would be the point where the shaft breaks. That plus the sharp hosel shelves create the perfect combo to snap shafts.

Curious what you use to countersink the hosels?  Thanks!

Sorry, but I NEVER sand graphite shafts. Scrape them carefully with a sharp blade. Countersink the hosel WELL. I've been installing graphite shafts since '87 and have NEVER had one break at the hosel. I practice off mats almost predominately cause that's just about all you find in New England. To have an OEM set break so much is simply poor prep and install procedure. End of story!

Crazy that they sanded so much off to create that obvious 'step' in the graphite.  I hope Callaway gets their stuff together and has their builders watch this video by @McGolf where he's working with Axiom (go to 4:20 mark) -

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread but I have to think its strictly because of how much material they took off

I would never recommend anyone “coning” the shaft. You’re taking off way more material than you need to. You can easily taper these uniformly to fit just fine without the cone.
