Do you consciously squat on the downswing?

I've been struggling with the Shanks for 15 years on and off.

I can play almost hit scratch 3 years ago.  Struggling with injuries lately but besides the point.

 

One instructor had me consciously squatting to "create space" on the downswing.  

 

I haven't really practiced it but today I really decided to try it.  

It worked wonders I was hitting the middle of the Irons face over and over which I haven't done in years.

 

I really struggle with anything higher than a 7 -8 iron.  I'm good with the wedges.

 

I almost think of a Tiger Woods power squat before I start the downswing.  Creates a tiny bit of a pause as well which helps.

How do you know if you were actually "squatting" or if you weren't just feeling something that resulted in something being a bit different?

If it works as a feel it's fine. Good player's don't actually squat any significant amount though

My experience with golfers is this.

 

The center of the pelvis only lowers an inch or so.  
 

Many golfers in an effort to fore their hips, raise the pelvis early.  Feeling a “squat” or some version of that, delays their hip turn and lowers the pelvis an inch or so.

When I hear "squat" I think of bending the knees more & lowering the pelvis. It looks to me like what is actually happening is forward bend from the hips is increasing causing the upper body to lower more...
