LAMINATED LOVE

Recommended Posts

They’re definitely deserving of their own place to be bragged about. I’m guilty as anyone on a persimmon bias and should game the Lam’s I  have more instead of just beating range balls with them.

Sure like the rest of you I’ve picked up sets of PINGS, H&B, WILSON STAFF and STAFF II’s.

The PING black dots (12 degree driver) might be the easiest wood wood to play. Pretty ‘unconventional’ looking to some though.

Was hitting range balls yesterday with the 4 wood for this 71 WILSON(i think)set. Not sure if it was the regular flex shaft or the cooler window style insert vs the red STAFF II insert but it felt more persimmon-ish to me. Sooner or later I’ll DIY refinish some clubs and be cool making these pretty again.

I love those Kenneth Smith laminates, a different look altogether.

I have quite  a lot of laminates and regularly play them, if I'm being honest I can't really tell the difference between them and persimmons when it comes to hitting the ball.

Neither could Hogan, so you’re in good company!

Pretty cool you posting these.

Those laminate’s are the definition of tools!!!

Funny enough I just watched a Mike Rees club repair video and he uses those aluminum ferrules to pull shafts on persimmon heads. He says that nearly all old persimmon clubs have cracks starting already and sliding one of those old aluminum ferrules on first is a trick he uses to keep from worsening cracks when pulling a shaft.

Im just starting to think of doing my own DIY work. Literally at the need to start gathering tools point. These clubs look way too nice but if you happened to have any other rougher candidates I’d be interested in getting them from you.

I really know nothing about Kennith Smith stuff other than I have and use his lorythmic swingweight scale semi often.

Was to freaked out about the Mike Rees part to notice the diagonal laminate layering. That’s really cool!

Super nice woods the Wilson Staff design and look was always a favorite. Had a couple versions of Wilsons and never could tell any difference to solid block woods. Sorry but I just never had any luck with the Wilson "window designs" inserts. Had them break and just pop out entirely. And it certainly wasn't because of my swing speed! I think I finally said forget it and if the club didn't have screws in the face I just passed on it.

Generally speaking, I do not like laminated woods mainly due to cosmetics.  I hate the alternating dark and light layers; to me they look like zebras.  I do take exception with a few models of laminates that do not have the alternating pattern.  Case in point: a Wilson Staff Tour Block 4 wood from I guess the early '80's?  This is a hand-me-down club from my brother, from his first set of golf clubs when he started playing around 1984.

Did I ever show you guys these Centurions by Steve Blitz?. 1965 Pat. for the first field adjustable weights. Brass screws and washers with lead plugs. Not easy to look at, but cool at the same time.

Really neat!  —- in a whacky techie way.

Believe you have posted these before here or elsewhere. I remember seeing a blonde set and I imagine the chances of their being multiple sets like these isn’t all that high. Have you tried them?

90 degrees legit here, went to the range. Been hitting them good overall, the 5 Zing is SO EASY to hit.  Goes about the same as my 26 degree hybrid but lower. 160, maybe 170 if It was cooler and I cranked it. But. awesome club to hit, very easy to get up in the air

The blonde Ping heads were a flop in the UK. They looked cheap compared to the classy black heads.

was it just the Ping Zing woods that were blond....or earlier? Besides, the so-called blondes look like "un-black" laminated woods.

I was gifted a Ping Eye 2 that had pink enamaled paint spilled all over it. I just used a paint remover & revarnished the bared laminate top - looks okay, who really cares - not me....it hits well, no different than it did when covered in paint or the "normal" Ping Eye 2 black wood....so what's the big deal

The Ping Blondes are confidence inspiring. Respect everyone's views but I look down and know they will fly.

I’ll admit they are funny looking compared to others. Little bit of snobbery in that statement but how they work warms you to them pretty quickly. Blondes or Brunettes pick ur flavor. Weren’t the ZING’s all blonde? Not sure if there’s a lot of difference between EYE2 and ZING woods other than more graphite shafts in ZING’s. Really seem to be LCG in all PING’s. The drivers feel almost like a billy club to me. Just a solid thump. I have a 1-3-5-7 set of EYE2 and can say the 7 is a lot for the eye to take in. Seeing the full loft of face and even the leading edge of the club is weird. Can’t figure how to hit it without pushing it right pretty badly. Maybe farther forward in stance IDK. That doesn’t make much sense either so….?

I have that same SW scale with the chart. I bought it from a shop that was closing down about 15 years ago now.
