The Best Public and Private Courses in Texas per Golf Week

I always like looking at lists like this. 

 

Probably can say this about a lot of the courses on the list, but if you've never been to Lajitas, it's worth the trip. The picture of the par 3 at Lajitas brought memories. None of them particularly good, lol.

Surprised that Shady Oaks and Northwood didn’t make the list over Brook Hollow and Colonial which have no memorable holes on them and really only have famous architect names attached to them.  Trinity Forest probably doesn’t belong in the top 50 in the state

Never played Shady Oaks but I've played the other 3. For just random one-off play (one and done) I'd say Brook Hollow and Colonial have more of a wow factor. They also have the benefit of a more recent renovation. Northwood though is the more fun track for a home course.

Memorial should not be on that list.   Also, to put Slick Rock as the best course at Horseshoe Bay is just crazy.

Having a famous architect always gets you higher ratings.  And for the past several years, you are golden if it's Coore and Crenshaw.

 

C&C have at least three courses on these lists.  I've played two of them (Austin GC, and Barton Creek Cliffside) and would not put either of them on the list.

Slick Rock being on that list caught my eye as well. From all I've read over the years, it would probably be last on the list of courses at Horseshoe Bay.

You should see the raters that come out to the courses to do the rankings. They're always retired desk jockeys who have no idea what they're talking about. They play all the courses from the tips and end up not carrying it to the fairways and get mad and rate accordingly.

I couldn't agree more! Also Golf Club of Houston Tournament course has been absolutely pathetic since they took the tournament away. Neither of those compare to High Meadow Ranch, but overall, Houston public courses suck big time.

They posted their superintendent job last year for 45k. I don't know what poor soul took that bait.
