Fade Bias 5 Wood?

argee1977

Recommended Posts

Looking at trying to get something a little more fade biased for my 5 wood, since putting the mini driver in the bag, the 5 wood is the only fairway wood, but it can go pretty left (and hooking) on me at times, probably the hardest in my bag to stop going left.

It's an LTDx standard 5 wood, stiff shaft, nothing changed on it and at standard, guessing it is draw bias, only option when hitting sometimes and worried when OOB is close down the left is holding the face, but that's not great for getting the required distances.

Try the LS version of the same head or send your current head out to hot melt and have some bias installed.

Playing a tour issue Cobra F7 4-5wd. I can't turn this thing over to save my life.

Playing it at 42". Big change coming from the F6 Baffler. I can hook that with ease.

If going Ping, you may want to consider "lofting up" to the next model (in this case, a 7w) and cranking that baby down into the big minus setting (can go flat from there, as well).  I've always found that their fairways sit a little closed, even in the flat setting.

Driver: Titleist TSR3; Mizuno ST200G; Nike CT2.0 (Aldila Rogue Silver)

Fairways: Titleist GT280Ping G425 7w; Ping G 5-7w; Nike CT2.0 5w (Aldila Rogue Silver)

Hybrid/Utility: Nike VFP 4i; Mizuno JPX 923 Forged 4i (AMT White X100); Mizuno ST-230 Z 4h (Ventus Black HB)

Irons: Bridgestone J36 Black Ox 5-P; Mizuno JPX923 Tour 5-P; Nike Blade 4-P (AMT White X100)

Wedges: Mizuno T24 52-56-60/Nike VR II Pro 54-58 (DG X1/S400)

Putters:  Mizuno M Craft III; Nike MC 12w

If you want 5-wood launch conditions while still being able to crank the face open, your best current bet is probably the Qi10 Tour 6-wood that Taylormade offers.  I think cranked down to 19* from the stock 21* setting you'll end up with a 4* open face on that one.

The best fade bias fairways (without having to adjust them) are Mizuno. Specifically the original STZ.

My exprience with the STZ, STZ 230 have been different. Both have been very neutral for my swing. This is also what Chris Voshall from Mizuno has shared on multiple interviews.

If there is a truly fade biased fairway wood out there, I’d be a bit surprised, since the whole world fights a slice.  But I’d guess (and it’s only that) that TM stuff is typically the most neutral to the point of being fade biased out there.

Really, it think you’re probably looking at playing around with hosel settings and shafts more than finding a truly fade biased fairway wood.

That was pre 2000 and 2000 thinking.

R&D and the resulting usage of Smart Technology and AI has definitely evolved since then and shows a drastically different shot pattern (or miss pattern in this sense).

Not sure what you are trying to say but I walk my dogs past several holes energy day and see about 95% slicers, although sometime somebody does manage a severe pull, all hitting the ball a little fat with their irons.

As I understand it fade bias is a matter of weight distribution, not face angle.

What YOU see is 0.0000000000000000000000000001% of the golfing population.

Check in with R&D at Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist, Cobra, etc.

How about Cobra LTDx LS 5 wood. I’ve played 2 rounds with it so far and it is neutral in the stock setting (12 gram weight in heel and 3 gram weight in the toe). If you flip the weights (12 gram weight in the toe) it should be fade biased. At 41.75” it is 0.75” shorter than your current 5 woods so it will play flatter. Also comes with a 75 gram shaft which may help keep you from going left.

Since you already have the Cobra LTDx 5 wood it shouldn’t be a big adjustment.

They are currently on sale for $129.

Had a try of a G430 5 wood, did well, bought one, not sure why there's so much difference between the two, but side by side testing showed that i just can't keep that LTDx on the planet compared to the G430!

Clubs are the same length 42.5”. Ping is 2.25 degrees flatter than the Cobra LTDx. That is a big difference and explains the difference in ball flight. Hope you enjoy the Ping 5 wood.

G430 7w, opened all the way up playing a touch short could be a really good option.

Hit it on the sim yesterday. Its fade biased with the weight in the toe. Goes straight for me which I usually over draw a 5 wood. The tensei white is too low launch low spin for me so im going to grab a ventus red to throw in it and test some more. Was only getting about 70ft height and 3000 spin.

Did you hit it off a tee or off the mat in your simulator? The rails on the bottom make it hard for me to get accurate spin and launch off the mat in my simulator. They are not a problem outside. I need and like the Tensei white shaft. Good luck

This is fantastic to know! I was indeed hitting it off the mat. Im gunna have to take it to the range to test before i change shaft.
