LIV Golf UK by JCB - July 26-28

This week is the LIV event at JCB.  JCB built and operates it's own club, which has been spotlighted by a few YT golfers over the past couple years since it was built.  Pretty nice course from the look of it, with a signature Par 3 hole 17.

• The JCB is the brainchild of Lord Anthony Bamford (son of Joseph Cyril Bamford) who is the chairman at the construction company started by his father, where the club gets its name

• Designed by Robin Hiseman of European Golf Design, the course opened for play in 2018 and made Golf Monthly’s list of the 10 Most Exclusive Golf Clubs in the UK

• The course routing utilizes a variety of landscapes, including open farmland, stately parkland, woodlands and spectacular lake lands

• Holes 1 and 3 utilize the Uttoxeter Canal, while holes 5, 11 and 12 play along the Alders Brook

• The island green 17th is the longest par 3 on the course at 244 yards

• The 506-yard 6th plays as a par 5 for members but will be a par 4 for LIV Golf UK

• Holes 2 (337 yards) and 12 (303) are both potentially drivable par 4s

• Creeping Bent grass is on the greens with a projected green speed of 11

Sergio and Rahm are sure polar opposites.  Sergio is hit or miss, Rahm is steady.

I’ve loved watching Shiels play this course.  I could just watch these pros play 17 all day.  Should be a fun tournament.

Agreed.  And I didn't realize until seeing the map that the tee boxes for 18 are actually on the island the 17th green is on.  Had to find another photo of it, and sure enough:

Ah, this is good news.  I always thought that grouping team members together would be a better viewing experience.  Maybe they’ll collaborate a bit, or make some jokes, or generally fire each other up.  You know, team stuff.

The London events were always very well attended, last year in particular.  It came right after the announcement of the "proposed merger" and suddenly going to a LIV event wasn't as frowned upon.  A bunch of the UK Youtubers ended up attending.  I'm not sure if JCB is easy to get to though, or out in the boonies.

Out in the Boonies? The course is close to the M6 motorway and accessible for the entire Midlands, North West and North Wales. I know it's hard for some people to grasp, but England exists outside of London and the Open rota courses.

AK would get absolutely dusted in a Monday Q. He'd struggle to make the cut at a KFT event. At this point he'd probably struggle to be on the traveling squad of a decent Div 1 program.

Very entertaining round today, good course, good play and fun for those attending. We all know LIV is never going to be like the PGAT but why can't people just enjoy some good entertainment without the fuss?LIV is good value and fun for those who can see it in person, I've been twice in different cities and enjoyed it just like the PGAT events I go to and some majors I have attended. Just entertain me at any event is all I ask.

Because that "good" entertainment came at the expense of the PGAT. Is it that hard to understand? 

 

The Genesis, API, The Players, Memorial simply aren't as interesting/exciting because Rahm, Bryson, Brooks, etc aren't there competing. A LIV win will never be that meaningful because the champion didn't have to go through Scottie, Xander, or Rory. 

 

We have more golf but less quality. We've further elevated the importance of majors over everything else. Not because the majors have actually improved in any way, simply because everything else has gotten a little worse.   

 

I'm happy that people from Adelaide and Nashville got to see some elite players in person. Hope you really enjoyed it. But that local boost has come at the expense of the wider golfing audience. Why exactly should that be cheered? 

 

There are reasonable conversations to be had about visiting golf starved areas and showcasing non-US venues but diluting the the top end of the talent pool and diminishing the quality of every non-major event was a pretty stupid way of accomplishing that goal.

It's not hard to understand at all and I agree with what you said. I wish it was back like it was but for now it is what it is, and if people want to have a good time, LIV events can offer that too. Not LIV a fanboy or PGAT hater, just saying you can have good experience if that is what someone wishes to spend their money on.

I harbor no grudge for fans that want to see pro golf LIV and enjoy the spectacle. Spend your money on what makes you happy. I harbor no ill will to the players that simply took the bag and wanted an easier schedule. 

 

What I do take issue with is LIV players and LIV fanbois whining about OWGR and major eligibility. They choose to play weak field minor league golf. They prioritized money over status. Stop crying about being excluded from the Masters and having to qualify into the Opens and count your money in peace. Nobody cares.

And yet you don’t complain about the negative impact that the PGAT has had on many tours around the world for years

The PGAT accomplished that over decades by growing demand, building a better product, and attracting talent. The European Tour lost talent because fans, broadcasters, and sponsors failed to compete, not because the PGAT cut Nick Faldo a check for $200M.
