House rental prices at tournaments

A lot or most of the pros rent houses at tournaments? I am sure it varies a lot but anyone have a clue how much that might cost? For a week? Why would someone give up their house for a week? It's not like most of those people that live on those courses need the money. Or is it enough to move the scale?

July 2024 back story for posts: I quit 20 yrs ago after left shoulder rotator cuff surgery didn't work. Tried again ten years ago, again hung it after a few months trying due to pain. Late July 2024, trying again but still enduring shoulder pain (and from other old injuries!). Rotator cuff surgery scheduled for Jan 2025. Used to be a golfaholic, got to scratch and better around age 50, love the game, aging ain't for sissies!

No idea but I did know a guy that rented out his downtown loft during NBA all star weekend for $25k. It was a cool place in a great location but not exactly some baller penthouse. We're talking 2bd 2bth and 1,500 SF.

Considering their aren't a bunch of 5 star hotels around Augusta, I image people can command quite a bit for a decent place.

to make an obscene amount of money for 7 days that can essentially pay for their mortgage that year? ... if not more? ... so they ruffle through your underwear drawer ...

Augusta is a very average place with limited rooms of any standard so homeowners can charge whatever they like

During the Open, there was a house for sale next to the 2nd tee at Troon for 1.5 million and it was rumoured to be rented out for the week for 40k

You’d probably discover that it’s real value is less than 1 million and might be rented for less than 1k

I have experience with this. Many 'with money' still do it - because it's anywhere between $7,500-9,500 tax free for only 4-5 days of use by the player. And thats for a signature event stop. I'm sure it varies by location and tournament, also other states might have differences in the 'tax free' aspect.

Most players week to week are in hotels or airbnbs

The % of players renting a house (like your description of people leaving their home) for the week is like 10%, at most

Have a friend I worked with whose husbands family lives in Augusta. They rented their house out every year and used the money to fly all the grandkids (5 or so) to Disney for the week. I dont know what she charged for the week but I do know it covered the plane and park tickets for everyone, hotels, and food.

Out of the fire and into the frying pan...

One of the best thing about my kids growing up is never to have to visit a theme park again...and, no, if I ever have grandkids I won't go, though I will foot the tab.

My buddy that lives on Rivera was offered 6 figures by a very prominent player for the week of The Genesis. He turned it down.

I know Rivera well, played it all the time, still visit occasionally to play with friends.  Used to have a house with a view near the course.  I was approached rather often to rent it out for big money but declined; too much adjustment on our part...

@playit Depending on the location, size and sophistication of the house, bring 5-6 figure deep pockets... LOL

Oh yes, most pro golfers struggle. The ones we see often on tv are the ones renting the big houses.

Most golfers trying to make the pga tour struggle.  Once there you are good.

155 players in the pga tour have earned 500k or better this year, and 100 have earned over a million.  That’s not counting endorsements.  This has drastically changed in the last 10 years.

A long time ago I was a corporate guest at The Masters for one day/night. This was around 2000 or so. I remember it was the last year Arnie played as a competitor.

The house we stayed in was a nice rancher. Each bedroom was available and they'd also put roll-away beds in one of the family rooms. I think 6-8 guys stayed overnight there. I slept in some little girl's pink bedroom. Our hosts had dinner and breakfast catered in. It was a few miles from the golf course in a typical neighborhood.

The process for getting passes was interesting.

There's a neighborhood of small ranchers across the road from the main Magnolia Lane gate of AN. We were sent to a specific address where we were told to park in the front yard. Inside the little house it was set up more like a business than a home. There was minimal furniture and the carpet was that green indoor/outdoor stuff. They had a little hospitality set up with snacks and a big TV and that was about it.  It seemed like the house was owned for this purpose specifically and no one lived there year-round.

We had to leave our car keys and credit cards with the host in order to take the passes. We were given a window to use them and a very specific time to return them.

The whole experience felt sort of like the town of Augusta had been vacated by its residents and handed over to the tournament guests and hospitality industry for the week. I'm guessing a lot of people make a good portion of their income that week.

Sadly for us it rained heavily all afternoon Friday and through the night. By the time we got to town play had been suspended on Friday and scheduled to wrap up Saturday morning. Our Friday passes ended up being good for about 2-3 hours on Saturday before we had to return them to be used by the Saturday guests.

My sister rented her place out during a major sporting event and made enough in one week to cover a few months of his mortgage. Especially in areas where hotels are limited, the demand is so high that owners can name their price, and people will pay. For some, it’s not just about the money but also the connections that come with renting to high-profile guests.

I'd also add, prob not every tournament but probably the Masters/majors, the town where you live turns into a vacation spot for a week, might be better to rent your house, take some money and go somewhere.

Came here to add this. I know some folks who live in the private community surrounding the course, and they bug out come tournament time. The house rental pays for their vacation.
