US Amateur - Hazeltine

14 for 11 playoff this morning. Big names that missed the cut include #3 Jackson Koivun and #8 Ian Gilligan.

Surprised to see Koivun & Gillian miss cut - as well as Luke Colton. 
 

I guess it’s good to show meritocracy to have 300 players all be given a fair chance of making the cut. That being said, if the goal is to have the best 64 players do match play, is this design the best set up? 

Are the midwesterners and/or people who have more practice time and/or time to adjust to the region/course - are they at a competitive advantage vs others who are just coming off another tournament or live far away?

That's golf man.  You could say there is regional bias in every US Open, US Am or US Junior selection, but what else can they do other than move it around?  Hazeltine is not a great golf course but it serves its purpose well as a championship test.  It's at Olympic Club and then Merion in 2026.

just talked to a competitor there. he said scoring disaparity betweeen two courses was kind of jarring but chaska town course was definitely easier.

 

he said the most challenging aspect was the different green speeds among the two courses. said hazeltine was rolling at about 13.5, and chaska rolling "only" at a 11.5.  😂

For the 2025 US AM at the Olympic Club, many Norcal college kids will know the course well. I don’t think quite as many college players will have as much of an advantage & knowing Merion for 2026.

Yeah, 2 rounds at different courses is not ideal for winnowing down a huge field. Maybe the Western has the better format with only 16 getting to match play. Though they do have a cut after 2 rounds, so....?

 

Definitely leads to having some less than stellar champs over the years.
