Footjoy Premier Shoes - causing pain

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I know we all have different feet but I could use some advice here. I bought some new FJ premiers a few months ago, they fit fine when laced up. 1st round I had awful blisters - fair enough I thought as they need to break in.

I am now a dozen or so rounds in and i'm still getting blisters on my heels, and my feet ache like mad. I have another pair of footjoys (can't mind the exact type but they are full waterproof) in the same size and I don't get any pain at all. They aren't the premiers.

I have never owned inserts so don't know where to start... but i'm fairly sure they are needed! Does anyone have any idea on good inserts to get? (UK).

I am worried that the shoe won't be deep enough if I put in some inserts, I just feel like I need somethings spongy to take away some of the impact.

Premiers are obviously one of the most popular shoe on tour, so I must be missing something here...

They're the wrong size for you, probably too big if you have blisters.

i find them to be terribly narrow. While i've never experienced blisters wearing mine i cannot wear anything FJ anymore without them being wide.... selection is a bit more limited on wide unfortunately.

How long have you had them? If it’s less than a month, call Footjoy customer service and they should make it right. They completely miss the last and sizing on the Premiers. They fit 1/2 size big and almost 1 full width more narrow.

I suspect they have an insert you can remove and put in an orthotic, like Superfeet or Sole.  Proper support is far more important than “spongy”.

They seem to fit a bit different for me depending on the style -field, tarlow, packard, etc

zero issue with Field, Wilcox, Packard but the first and only pair of Tarlow killed my feet. Not sure if it was the fit of that design or just that pair.  Tried wearing them multiple times and they just won’t break in.

called and discussed with Footjoy Customer Service and they were great and took great care of me.

Footjoys don’t fit me at all anymore.  Too narrow and the arch is too far forward.  They kill my feet.  I love the look so every few years I try again, but it’s the same story.  Our club pro got a brand new pair of Premiers from me the last time I went through it.  The shape of Footjoys classic shoes (like the Premier, Packard, etc. ) footbed is different than almost any other golf shoe.  I held them up to my current pick, the Adidas Tour360 24 and the footbeds are noticeably different shapes.  If your foot shape doesn’t correspond to Footjoy’s shape, it doesn’t matter if you get the right size, go wide, or whatever.  They just ain’t gonna fit right.

What socks do you use? My friend work in running shoes business and he always say to people that you need the right socks.

socks are not going to fix the issue with the premieres. They're entirely too narrow. The wide fit now is basically a D width of old footjoys

FJ has some pretty cool shoe fitting tools... for those that have access.   They can laser scan feet and recommend models and size.   It's mainly about finding the last that works best for one's foot.

I wouldn't be surprised if, especially in the premieres, they do custom fit the pros.   I recall one of their guys mentioning, for example, that JT wears different sizes on each foot.

I measure 15 narrow on a Brannock device. All my Nike running shoes are 15 regular. Most other shoes (most Allen Edmonds) are 15 regular. Adidas Gazelles are 14 regular for a snug fit. Occasionally I’ll fit into a 13 regular in some random shoe.  I have a very flat, low volume foot.  FJ Packard Premiere are the only shoes that fits me, volume wise.

On FJ’s website, you’d think I’d need either a 13 narrow or 14 narrow. I ordered every size.

14 (all widths) were way too long.

13 regular were entirely too small.
13 WIDE fit in the end, but initially felt too small in places and were too narrow!  I almost returned them.

Then I bought a shoe stretcher.  Never heard of such a thing but they work brilliantly to widen shoes and punch out hotspots (like your big toe, etc).  Now they are the best fitting pair of shoes I own. (If I wear them with Bombas Golf socks, so naturally I replaced all my socks…)

I’ve also used the device to make several other shoes fit better. The nice wooden Foot Fitter ones on Amazon work well for about $50.

Where does one go to access these footjoy fitting tools?

Sorry, no idea.

Over the years I've read/seen/heard a number of spots with the FJ folks that talk about them.   One of their main assertions is that the vast majority of us are wearing the wrong size (usually too large).   They've often spoken about their fitting programs and capabilities and hit at rolling them out to the public, but I've never been aware of an actual opportunity to take advantage of it.   IIRC, the last iteration was called FitLab.

Might be best to reach out to FJ directly.   Could be something that's only available at their MA and CA facilities (similar to their tour level fittings).

Did it take a few rounds to break in?

I finally ordered a pair of the fields in 10.5 wide. They felt fine for the first 13 holes of walking, right out of the box and then my pinky toes hurt like crazy.

Back to this - I have given up on the Premiers - planning to sell them on as they are still in mint condition.

I run them a half size down and in wide, which solved my major issues, however I think there are better options out there for the price point. The inside liner on mine deteriorated pretty quickly and I cycle three pairs.

I prefer the look of FJ shoes, but am transitioning to Ecco for better comfort. I just purchased a pair of Ecco Biom Tour in white on a black Friday deal for under $100 which was a no brainer. Not the best looking shoe, but man are they comfortable and I don’t need to purchase wide sizing. I want to try the H4 or H3 as well.

I have a different problem.... I went .5 size down and wide.

Walking around the store, felt great. Walking the first 8-9 holes, feel fine. Then I start feeling pressure on my pinky toe, especially on the top.... to the point that I need to change shoes. I walked 18 holes with them, pinky toes hurt pretty bad. Walked another 9 and felt the same pressure after 9.

Not really sure if they will break in, it feels like the crease from walking, hits the top of my pinky toe.

Anyone else have this issue?

Yes, my Tour Alphas gave me the exact same pinch. Toes were almost purple... the change in fitment has ruined the shoes for me. I cannot wear them.

Dang it... obviously you gave a few rounds to break in and it just never happened?

Not surprising, going a half size down, your toes are closer to the toe of the shoe and there’s less vertical room there.

I'd say at least a dozen rounds.. then I switched back to Ecco. It's the new shape of the shoe.. When i compared to my old TourX, it was glaringly obvious to me that they narrowed the entire design.

Been curious about those and other Ecco's might have to take a chance since not many FJ models appeal to me now except for the HyperFlex.
