Black Course Single

Can singles show up early on a weekend and get out on Bethpage Black? I've been looking at the online system for a while and there are never any openings.  Thanks,

Yes. A lot of singles get out this way. You just have to be flexible..

Contrary to popular belief there are always holes in the tee sheet especially afternoons in the dog days of summer. Walking only discourages a lot of golfers... That is one tough walk in the heat but you can get on.

As a single you should be fine. I wouldn't get your hopes up for a 4 ball, but singles I've only ever been once and there weren't any available. Otherwise you're normally going to be fine. If you get there at 9am, you'd be unlucky not to be going before noon I think. There have been times when I've got there and there's a spot in 40 minutes.

Thanks for your replies. I'll be there on 9/21 and 9/22. I'm hoping to get one on the Black and one on the Red. Fingers crossed.

I got lucky and snagged a single spot online the night before and played it this summer.  When I was there it seemed like they had several singles available as the starter asked if I wanted to go out earlier.  Seems like it's not uncommon for day of no shows.  Played it a couple times about a decade ago, I forgot how good it was!  Green were a bit slow but true.

Here's my Bethpage 2024 trip report.

 

I got to Bethpage at 3 am on Saturday and was in parking spot 80, the place was packed.  My ticket was 465 (I think the first ticket was 300).  By the time they called 400, Black was sold out.  As my number was called, one spot on Black opened. I raced to the window but was beaten by a guy with a three-step head start. My consolation prize was Red at 11 am.  The Red layout is great, however, the conditions are meh. Slow greens, rocks on the bunkers, and burtout fairways and tee boxes.  All the par threes played 150ish, I wish they spread them between 130 and 180, but that's a nitpick.   I understand it's a muni and will never get the love and affection that The Black receives, but one can dream.  My three playing partners were good guys, we had a fun time.   

 

On my way out Saturday afternoon, a dozen cars were already lined up for Sunday.  I went to Brooklyn for family dinner and bolted back to Bethpage as soon as we finished. This time space 23 at 11 pm.  The old local parked next to me said I had no chance to get on Black, but there were plenty of spots when I got to the Window and I got out in the second group. The Black is awesome, it's a treat. However, I was exhausted, the wind was howling, and I never found my game.  I would love to play it with a secured tee time and a good night's sleep.  Maybe the next time.    

 

If you are a golf addict, and I certainly am, you really should take the pilgrimage to Bethpage once.  Don't worry about your score, embrace the experience.

First timers arriving to Bethpage Friday evening and hoping to get a tee time as a two-some for Saturday. Do you think 7 or 8pm is early enough to park and camp out to snag a tee time? Weather forecast is looking really nice so I'm getting nervous after reading the previous post.

No worries, you'll get out. If I were to guess you'd end up getting a tee time before noon. Being a twosome helps a lot. Tee times at Bethpage (all courses) are extremely difficult to get and some folks (generally seniors) are there camping out for the Red course because they want to get out early and need to take a cart.

Black course is closed on Mondays.

Lucky to just be a NY resident and have the ability for early access to the tee sheets before out-of-state players.

 

Played Red / Black back to back days around 4th of July weekend and was such a great experience but I definitely want to try and get out early season when its not 98 degrees!!!

Toying with the idea of trying to get up to BPSP this summer in July to stay and play for a few days. Found this website with some interesting tidbits for the upcoming season.  Notably:

 

• They're going to keep the rough mowed down (a tad) all summer long in advance of the RC.
• Black, Green, and Yellow close August 18th; Blue & Red close in mid-September.
• From July 7th to August 17th, no more tee times on BPB.  Walk ups only, and last tee time of the day will be 12:30pm.

 

Not sure how this impacts accessibility of the walk-up model for getting on BPB.  As an out-of-towner, my obvious concern is that it may be a little more competitive than usual this summer.  My plan was to try to use the walk up process for 3-4 days in a row (would plan to target a string of weekdays rather than a weekend) and see what I could get; ideally, I'd love to play all 5 courses, but I wonder what this is going to do for people's chances of getting on the Black, specifically.

By summer, it might be front 9 only.

 

I heard red 1st fairway also has grabbed for hospitality tent.

 

By the time you get here, things might look quite different.

Yeah, much of this is hinted at in the link I posted. It is what it is. Bethpage isn’t going to host a major tourney every year, and I’m close enough that I could see myself coming back, for sure.

Crazy how much greener it was Sunday. My only complaint is the lack of anyone taking the time to rake the bunkers after playing out of them. Pls be better people!

They weren't a single, but had a buddy play it earlier this week. They got there at 12:30 the day before and were 3rd in line
