Recommended Custom Putter Work - Phantom X9.2

Hello forums,

 

I was hoping you could help me with a decision that I've been trying to make. I was looking to get some custom putter work done on a Phantom X9 that would require quite a bit of work to build Scotty that was garnering some popularity on tour: Justin Thomas, Tom Kim, Hideki Matsuyama.

 

The build would require:

1. Shaping and rounding out the edges
2. Refinish to a chocolate/slate color
3. Weld a plumbers neck
4. *OPTIONAL* Remove old sight lines and mill new ones

 

Any and all recommendations would be much appreciated!

I would say norcal but hes the most expensive of the bunch. Maybe BOS golf or the other guy I forget his name right now but he does a lot of iron logo removal/welding and sanding/shaping. You can also try Ray @ East Coast Custom Putters I've never had him turn down a project but his communication and timelines are not the best at times.

 

The biggest issue is going to be the softening of the main topline as I'm almost certain these are different heads and/or were batched in the CNC different from the stock heads. If it's to be done by hand thats a lot of material to take off and a CNC+hand sand combo is a lot of labor work.

 

You're going to be in for the price of the putter plus at least $550-850 IME

I have a project out to Flanigan.  It is not done, so no idea on the results.  I wanted some factory milling removed (words and symbols) and a new neck.  I sent an email and dude asked me to call him and we talked before he committed.

Am I missing something here? That reshaping looks like 15 minutes on a bench grinder to me.

I've reached out to Norcal and Flanigan, both of which I've had work done fabulously, ultimately deciding on Norcal.

 

I reached out to them via Instagram and explained what I wanted and they sent me an invoice explaining they can do it. With the putter design being so intricate and new, I had concerns if they knew exactly what was required and decided to call them to explain to them.

 

The women I spoke with was incredibly polite and upon pulling up my invoice, she said, "Oh so you just want a 9.2" and was very familiar with the putter circulating online. She was beyond helpful and reassured me that the softening of the putter lines was one of the easier steps in the project and that multiple people had already commissioned the putter. This put my mind at ease.

 

Many places don't advertise the reshaping/altering of putter heads but I'm sure many places "can" do it. My concerns were also whether or not the softening was done by a belt grinder or CNC milled. However, upon looking at the designs of Justin Thomas' and Hoge/Matsuyama, all the faces are slightly different in shape so I'm under the impression that it was all done by hand. This again eases my concern.

 

I'm sure we'll see many custom made SC 9.2s out there on custom putter social media accounts and I'm certain that with more orders flooding in, it would only continue to get better.

A quick update. This isn't the one they did for me but Norcal Putters did a fantastic job with this. Weld looks amazing and its a torched gold finished. The softening looks unreal.

It's new like a few months old, don't think many know outside the pure degenerates.

I think it makes sense to me that for a simple anser shape, most fully milled putter heads will perform pretty much similarly, but for a more complex shape like this one, is there no reason to think that there may be performance differences between this (lajosi) vs. a reputable brand that has been at it with lots of r&d for years? (genuine question!)

What R&D do you think is involved?  I’d argue slightly changing dimensions on an anser head has a bigger impact than on many mallets (possible to get an all steel anser to have a MOI greater than many mallets on the market).  Every cad program out there will calculate MOI in every plane and total.  No need to actually make a putter prior to knowing how it’ll perform.  

 

Problem with most mallets is that they have a pretty big aim bias that shifts focus away from the face.  Most large manufacturers don’t understand the relationship shape, offset, alignment lines, etc play on aim bias.  They are going for something that looks cool and probably has more time with the marketing department than engineers.
