Broadcast mentioned yesterday that the greens were stimped at like 9.5 this week, compared to the 12.5ish that the LPGA averages. There were a crap ton of putts left short all tournament. I’m sure it’s hard to adjust, especially when the pressure is on.

So many top level professional athletes that can’t make the “in game” adjustment… Perplexing to say the least. Fitting that the one that was able to do it won.

Yes, they were slower than the norm for the LPGA, but c'mon. I played two different courses last week - one (a public course) that was probably stimping 8, and one (a private course who's members like quick greens) at around 10. Takes me all of four or five holes to adjust to a green - and I'm just a duffer. Adjusting to green conditions is pretty much pro golf 101, isn't it?

So really, the fact that they were slower than usual really isn't (in my mind) an excuse. If you are playing the freaking 72nd hole and you still haven't adjusted to green speed ... well I just don't know what to think.

How can you possibly leave that short, when you have to hole it to force a play-off.

At least give yourself a chance.Hopeless/

We've all done it.

Even in a scramble, putting last, guys still leave it short.

When you're used to putting a certain way, (especially(?)) when the pressure's on, you have to let yourself trust it. If you don't and "make sure you reach the hole", you're not going to make the same stroke. It's a conundrum. 73b80a_e8a86f5f975a415d934045bef90864a6~

And then there's others of us who just can't bear to see the ball rolling past the hole - don't ask me how I know. (Thanks :classic_sad:

Actually, given all the golf I've watched, especially this year (it seems), far more putts are missed because of too little speed, rather than too much.

My friend, when one is used to playing 12-stimp greens and one goes to 9.5-stimp greens the difference is extremely noticeable, even to the pros. Sometimes you just can't believe how much harder you have to hit a putt.

Had a guy in our club who played a lot on country club greens. When he played at our dump on Sundays, he just couldn't reach the hole.

Not to mention the rain most of the day today. Oops.

They all did except Lydia seemed to have the best speed control. No one else seemed able to accommodate the slower greens.

Yeah, Nellie on the road hole.

Nellie coughed it up on the par-5 14th.

Not sure about the strategy on her 2nd shot that left her in the right rough.

Looked like enough fairway to her left - and from there a pretty simple short-ish SW/LW. Instead, there it goes, flying over the green.

And then she compounds the mistake by not getting her chip at least onto the green. Next chip long, doesn't make the 5-footer, and a double instead of a good look at birdie.

Sheesh, those are things WE do, not World's #1.

What was she and the caddie thinking on the 3rd shot on 15 ???? flyer brings double into play, short was the miss and it look like they never considered it would fly ?

The 2nd shot on 14 was the big mistake imo. She’s got all the room in the world left of the green and blew it right. That should’ve been a par at worst from where she was

That's the weird thing about golf...even the best players in the world hit bad shots and make double bogeys.  we just do it more often than nelly does.

Sorry - just not buying it. The average LPGA tourney stimp is 11.5 - 12. And it is not uncommon under really wet conditions to get down to 10.5 or even 10. These people aren't always playing on sheets of glass for goodness sake.

But there's a bigger picture. The average tournament stimp is 11.5 - 12. But consider this, before anyone even makes a pro tour they've already played well over a thousand rounds of golf, on a huge variety of courses. Probably hit tens of thousands of practice putts on all manner of greens. The pros obsessively practice putting - do you think every practice green stimps 12?

No - IMO it was not the green speed. Ko won because she beat Vu mentally, plain and simple. On 18, with the ultimate pressure on (final hole, at a major, at the Old Course), the Lyds absolutely nailed her wedge, and rolled her putt in center cup. Vu hit a really mediocre wedge, and then hit a very tentative putt that she left over a foot short. Vu didn't lose because of a stimpmeter. She lost because of nerves.

Just my opinion.

Morgan mentioned how Nelly was trying to hold off on that 3W to keep the ball from going left. Right rough wasn't the play. Maybe bad stuff far left, but I didn't really see it. Maybe play a cut every now and then instead of that rope hook all the time.

Also needs to get back to being more aggressive with the putter like earlier in the year. Her meditation mantra should be "Two feet past, two feet past...".

I was waiting for Nelly's meltdown come holes 13-16, and it came.  Even events she won this year, some of them had to go to playoffs because she threw the lead away on holes 13-16.  Just seems to be her bug-a-boo.

That was a tough finish in terms of cheering on a favorite, because I liked everyone on the leaderboard.  Great win for Lydia!

Master club fitter Tux was helping me build some Mizunos while we watched.  He's a big fan of Ko.
