Junior Fairway Wood Help

My junior is 10 years old, he swings his driver around 160 yards carry, looking for a fairway wood in the bag.  We currently are using a Flynn 18 degree wood but we just don't like it as much.  we had tried the Taylormade woods with junior shaft but they are a bit too heavy. 

 

Any suggestions on which Faiway wood and degree?

 

should junior this age be swinging more of a 5 Wood or 7 wood?

At that age, I think our son was using ladies fairway woods.   15 and 18 degrees

My son is very similar.  Ping Prodi G is working well.

This is an awkward stage for boys and fairway woods.  With a 160 carry, he could go either way with 5 or 7 wood.  Making sure the shaft is a match and it is the right length is paramount here--you could end up anywhere between 18-22*, and with his SS, 22* could be a better fit right now.

 

My son has moved on to the g425 18* fw and g430 22* hy (both stock Alta senior shafts) with mostly good results as his swing is now in the high 80s.

It was the same with my son.  I moved him on from the Prodi g fw and hy too early, as the shafts were too short at that time and I moved him up by that default.  The next best thing, after some digging, was the old Ping GLe fw and hy (22* and 26* just like the Prodi g, with a very similar head design and shaft flex).  These clubs were gold for about a year for him.  

 

He still carries the 26* GLe hy in favor of his set 6i (he's 11 now), and it is favorite club in his bag.  The club serves double-duty as his chipping club in certain situations as well.  HOF club in my book.  We picked up this FW and Hy duo for about $140-$150 used as a package deal on eBay, roughly the same money we picked up the Prodi g FW and HY duo up for aslo used on eBay.

Until the kid hits 82 mph ss or so, I have to say the Prodi g is really tough to beat for FW and Hy.

I posted this in another thread a few days back, but when I was buying my son's clubs everybody here raved about the Ping Prodi G FW and Hybrid...and they were right. Just awesome clubs, especially the FW. There is only one option as far as loft goes, 22 degrees, but I would honestly end the search and buy it.

EDIT:  I just realized that ladies 3-wood is same loft and mens's 5-wood.  

18 and 22 degrees respectively.

Women's GLE and GLE2 driver and woods have two lightweight shaft options and are generally the most suitable adult clubs for smaller juniors.  My daughter used GLEs (also irons) for a few months when she was 12 before going through a growth spurt.  Also consider used Japanese ladies clubs as those also tend to have lighter heads and shafts - used and prior near-new model Honma and XXIO can sometimes be found on eBay being sold by Japan-based vendors. The market for used womens clubs tends to be not as strong so I was able to get Honma woods and hybrids for US$ 65-110.

Ping Prodi G is great, but if you could also try TSi1, TSR1 in an 18 degree....  The Titleist "1" line worked very well for my son when he was 11/12..

Just gotta say that neither my son or daughter completely got on with their TSi1 18* when I tried to add it to their bags.  My son hit it very well at first, but after a three-week honeymoon period he lost all confidence in squaring it up.  Tried to give it to my daughter, she liked it less than her LTDx ladies 5w.  We changed shafts a few times, but it just never stayed in the bag.  For whatever reason, my son kept saying he preferred the lower-profile of the Ping fairways and he's in a G425 now.  The stock Alta 65 SR shaft is a pretty good fit for him.  My daughter is in a G425 as well, but she only hits it marginally better than her old LTDx.  Going back to a stock Alta 65 R in that one, should be be more consistent for her.

 

I really think it has more to do with the shaft than anything else when it comes to fairway woods... and to a lesser extent, hybrids.  I will never understand why he never hit that TSi1 well after the honeymoon period ended
