Tucking right elbow?

Wondering what you guys think of this, particularly as it pertains to keeping the swing on plane. Been working with this lately while coming out of a swing funk, and seems to be doing a lot of good. Seems when I focus on keeping my right elbow tucked on the backswing, it seems much easier to stay on plane and return the clubhead on the right swing path into the ball. Maybe I should have posted in the "Hogans Heroes" forum, as this was a big Ben Hogan thing. Impact seems much better as well. Dropping the club into the slot seems much easier if just simply keeping the right elbow tucked.

I prefer a straight back and through approach, so found tucking or folding the right arm early helped with keeping everything connected, where I had a tendency to lose it because I went too far out.

 

I'd just try not to overcook it. I got very tense trying to hold that 'tucked' feeling, and noticed naturally it will flare a bit, which helps with feeling the change of direction as you pull it closer on the downswing.

You’re talking feels, which are personal and heavily influenced by your previous motion.   I don’t get along as well with feel of tucked in BS.  I prefer the feeling that the humerus is captured not pinned down by a little tension in BS.  Motion of right elbow is heavily influenced by right hand grip.  Varying degrees of tucked in DS is fine.  This is just another component that you learn by trial if you don’t have a guide, not all components get along.  Better like this or this, education and training.

Per Porzak you want the trail elbow to be in the correct position while remaining "soft" or free of tension. 

 

For some people the idea of "tucked" probably involves some muscle tension which is not helpful. Monte has explained the concept as "moving the humerus (upper arm bone) forward." Dig into his content for more.

If it feels right, it's right.  Some people swing better tucking the trail arm - Dustin Johnson and Colin Morikawa - some people don't - Jim Furyk and Jack Nicklaus.  The key is to understand what it is going to do to the club and how to manage it.  Tucking the trail arm will create a more in to out path.  This doesn't mean you will hit a draw necessarily as there are many other factors to creating a shot shape, but it will add a draw element into your swing.  So for instance if you were hitting fades before doing this, it will likely help straighten the ball flight out.

Externally rotating the right arm and over-bending the right elbow to get that "tucked in" backswing usually leads to bad outcomes. You want to push your left arm out as far away from you as possible without locking the elbow in the backswing, think 1996/97 Tiger. As long as you get that width, it's impossible to be too flat.
