Scottie Scheffler Facts

Factually not true when you look at how/when NFL contracts extensions including bonuses are paid out in cash annually.  Goff and Love are being paid $80.6 and $79 million this year respectively in 2024.  Since the time of the post, Prescott's new contract will pay him $81.25M in 2024.  Lamar Jackson was paid $80M in 2023.

If you don't want to look at how cash is being paid, and just on contract value or average value per year of service, Ohtani's contract is 10 years and $700M.  I understand Scheffler might surpass that with PIP, but the $62.3M referenced in the original post is still less than $70M.

I knew I should have included a footnote for the finance nerds.

No NFL AAV to date is higher than Scheffler. Even the NBA supermax is a few years away.

Ohtani is getting $2M this year and is being paid over decades. Present value is less than $50M.

I for one can’t understand why anyone gets so worked up about Scheffler either way, positive or negative.  He’s clearly the best golfer in the world at the moment but he’s as bland as a pair of tan slacks.  I don’t feel love or hate watching him, just boredom.  Seems like a nice guy though.

So, watching the best golf in the world is boring…unless what?  What would you like him to do to excite you?

Well nothing any male golfer could do would excite me, but it might be cool if he had a bit of a personality?

Is just watching someone hit good shots ‘exciting’? Is it really exciting to see a white ball fly through the air and land near a hole over and over and over for hours?  I mean, I hit good shots fairly often myself and I wouldn’t call it exciting.  Is the fact that Scheffler is doing it with a seven iron from 210 into a firm green and I’m doing it with a 6 iron from 165 into a soft green really enough of a difference to make watching his ball flight ‘exciting’?  Would it be exciting to you to watch a robot his those shots over and over and over?  Golf without personalities attached is boring.

I’m not a hater by any means; he’s the best golfer out there.  But he’s bland as melba toast.  I find it funny that people rip Cantlay for his lack of personality, but then give Scheffler a pass.  At least he doesn’t do that creepy tongue thing that Cantlay does.

I read that he won with 91% of the vote.

Like we've been saying for months now his season was clearly better than Xander's. A 7 win  season including the Players and the Masters + Olympic Gold.

From my own research it's the greatest non-Tiger season since Jack Nicklaus. Just pure insanity.

Xander had a great year but as an apples to apples comparison, Scottie's blows Xander's out of the water.

I’d at least listen to someone making an argument for Vijay, Tom Watson, or Trevino 71.

But the vote should have been unanimous this year. A vote for Xander is essentially saying the PGA is worth more than the Players plus five other wins.

Vijays's 2004 was outstanding sure, but top to bottom it's not quite there. And 9 wins out of 29 is not as impressive as 8/20 (including the Olympics) and almost all of them being high tier wins.

Miller's 8 win season in 1974 was fantastic but no majors.

Tom Watson had 7 wins and a major in 1980 in 23 events. It's probably the best of the bunch but Scheffler still tops it.

Nick Price in 1994 but he was a lot more inconsistent with 5 MCs in 19 events. Still, 2 majors 6 wins total.

Trevino in 1971 is definitely up there but it's before the Jack years I was referring to. Jack's best season was clearly 1972 2 majors plus 5 other wins. It's also the only time he won back-to-back majors and nearly won 3 in a row at the British where Trevino beat him by a single stroke. Man was Trevino on a heater I truly believe he would have an even better record if not for the freak lightning incident.

--------------

Even the great Tiger Woods only has a couple seasons which are clearly better than Scottie this season in 2000 and 2006.

You're damn right I was in the minority, yes.  9.3% to be exact.

I am also the same guy that said Johnson's win at the fake Masters in November of 2020 should have an * in the record books.

Same 2024 season with a "full field" of talent, Scheffler gets as many wins - highly unlikely.

Scheffler's season: *

Scheffler's POY: *

All fair points, although I think Vijay should be applauded for teeing it up 32(!) OWGR events in 2004, with just one MC... back when full fields were the norm.

It will be interesting to see how this period of a diminished PGA Tour is viewed 10-20 years from now.

The field sizes are definitely sad nowadays and only getting worse. Mid season I said Vijay was still ahead of Scottie but that was when he had 6 wins, not 8. And the fact that Scottie destroyed his competition in almost all of those small field events still has to be commended. I'm comfortable with ranking it above a few 2 major seasons because of those two huge wins plus everything else. Nobody has to agree of course.

The best recent non-Tiger season with 2 majors was Jordan Spieth's 2015: 5 wins including the Masters and the US Open and 4 other 2nd place finishes. The guy was on fire. None of the other 2 major seasons are close until you reach that Nick Price 1994 season.

In fact if you want to see, here's a nice list which mentions all of them:

Diminished? Because a couple top players are playing LIV?  If anything it’s tougher now than in VJ’s era because the top foreign players essentially all play the PGA Tour full time now.

I'm not fan of LIV, but I don't think it is a stretch to say it has taken about  20% of the Tour's strength.

Rahm, Koepka, and Dechambeau are 3 of the very best players in the game.

Smith and Niemann probably top 25.

Gooch, Reed, and maybe a few others top 50.

DJ was the best player in golf for quite a while. Seems to have slipped quite a bit last year, but talent like that...

In 2004 the top foreign players were Vijay, Ernie, Goosen, Sergio, and Harrington.

Vijay played the PGA Tour almost exclusively. Ernie, Goosen, and Sergio played full PGA Tour schedules but also played the Euro Tour (not dissimilar to Rory today).

Harrington was mostly Euro at that time, but he still played 5 regular PGA Tour events + 3 WGCs.

There were occasional skips, but nearly everyone who was eligible (regardless of tour) played the Players and the WGCs.

How is shooting -9 in the final round boring?

Winning never gets boring and winning like Tiger never gets old.  2025 should be quite interesting.

Two basketball games are going on.  One has teams comprised of Anthony Edwards clones, the other Nikola Jokic clones.  You can only watch one game.  Which do you watch?  The super athletic, animated guys who jump out of the gym, or the lumbering oafs who have a four inch vertical, move slower than tar on a cool day, and have never seen a set shot they didn’t love?  Jokic is the best, but do you really want to watch 10 of him play basketball over AEs?

Winning can be incredibly boring.  The New Jersey Devils built a dynasty with the left wing lock, and Tampa Bay followed that with the even more boring, but very effective, 1-3-1 that they rode to the top of the NHL.
