I had my fitting this morning and other than it being a little cold (low 50's) and windy the overall experience was top notch. I decided to follow Stryper's approach of going in totally open-minded and really paying more attention to feel and the results instead of immediately checking the shaft / surefit specs when being handed something new. Some will likely be surprised by the driver shaft recommendation, I know I was, but it was a pretty clear winner from the session. My fitter Billy was great to work with and I'd definitely recommend him for anyone located in the northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin area.

Driver fitting (5 swing average)

Baseline - Cobra Aerojet LS - 9* - Kai'Li White 60x

Swing Speed - 109     Ball Speed - 161     Spin - ~2,650     Carry - 264Y

Ordered Spec - GT3 - 8* - Even Flow Riptide 60x

Swing Speed - 109     Ball Speed - 164     Spin - ~2,275     Carry - 276Y

Heads tried - GT2 (9* / 10*)     GT4 (9*)     GT3 (9* / 8*)

Shafts tried - GD Tour AD VF (6/7)     Tensei 1K Black (65g)     Riptide (60g)

I came very, very close to going with the GT4 9* as the feel reminded me of a modern 983E. Sound is a little more "tingy" with the GT4 than the GT3 but the feel was about as good as it gets when hitting one in the screws. The GT3's extra forgiveness and sound (more of a "thwack") is why I decided to go in that direction but the GT4 was close to being the one. The surprising part of the order was the shaft spec. I previously played a Ping G410 LST with the Even Flow Black so I'm comfortable with that profile / feel but I honestly expected to end up with the HZRDUS Black or the Tensei 1K Black. However, once we moved to the 8* head moving to a mid-launch shaft brought everything into the right window.

3-Wood fitting (3 swing average; didn't hit as many due to time)

Baseline - TSR2 - 15* - Tensei 1K Black 75x

Spin - ~3,800     Carry - 242Y

Ordered Spec - GT3 - 15* - Tensei 1K Black 75x

Spin - ~3,350     Carry - 248Y

I knew the 3-wood fitting would be easier due to how good my TSR2 spec has been. It's always been on the higher end for launch and spin but it's been ridiculously consistent so any changes / tweaks should be minimal. The shaft was already a good fit for the fairway so it really became a question of tweaking the weights in the GT2 or moving to the GT3. The GT2 is great; very similar to the TSR2 and the launch was a little better overall. However, I knew within two swings the GT3 was the better fit. The launch window and spin were much better for my game which should help with reducing the frequency of the "balloon-ball" miss.

Sounds like the clubs should arrive sometime the week of the 15th. Happy to answer any questions in the meantime.

Good stuff @AUTIGER07 - candidly, never tried the Riptide models but I appreciate you went in "blind" and let the numbers / results do the talking.  Im assuming you stopped at 3W - guessing your gapping would suggest only one FW?  Curious how my fitter will approach my bag - I start at 5I and typically carry 2 FWs, as its what I'm most comfortable / successful with at this point.  I also still come back to the 13.5 - hoping my fitter has a head to try out as I think it could be an asset to my bag (off the tee AND deck).

Driver: Titleist GT3 9 degree with Ventus TR Blue 60 Stiff

Fairways:  Titleist GT3 4W and GT2 7W with Ventus TR Blue 70 Stiff

Irons:  Cobra Forged Tec 5-PW with KBS Tour Stiff

Wedges:  Haywood Signature Wedges - 50 / 54 / 58

That's correct in terms of the 3W gapping in that it's the only fairway wood in the bag. I'd talk to your fitter about it during the session but my fitter did have a 18* head in the bin, which I think was a GT2.

GT2 was really good and in my opinion a solid continued improvement from the TSi and TSR lines. We played around with the weights but ultimately the spin profile of the GT3 / GT4 just fit my swing better.

I don’t remember the exact specs but it was 4-5 yards behind but most of that was due to the higher spin and launch.

In the lead-up to my fitting on Saturday, I wanted to get some range time with my current driver & FWs to make sure my swing is in good shape.  Well, it appears that my Driver knows something is up, and delivered a pretty great range session this afternoon (apologies for glare).

In addition, this happened in my last round over the weekend - granted I did hit a small downslope for a little kick, but this was absolutely hammered with a small baby draw.  The GT definitely has its work cut-out for it this weekend.

Speaking of, any questions that you'd like me to ask my fitter during the session?  Happy to make note of them and ask!

Interested if they have the Ventus TR shafts for you to try, and if not, whatever you end up getting fit into, if it has the same characteristics as your current gamer. Good luck and enjoy!

I'm hoping they have my current shaft (TR Blue 6), as I'm a huge fan of its feel / performance, but also trying to approach this as "open minded" as possible.

So this question presented an interesting wrinkle to my own fitting process.  Not with the Ventus, but with the Tensei that I was ultimately fitted to.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I normally self-fit based on the weight, flex, torque and launch characteristics described by club and shaft OEM’s.  Consequently, when I picked up my TSR3, I went with the Tensei Blue, as is most closely matched the UST shaft that I had then had in play.  That Tensei did perform as expected, however it eventually lost in a shootout to the UST by seven or eight yards, with similar dispersion.

So it was interesting that I ended up back in the Tensei, even though my fitter, Matt, had no idea about my earlier adventure with Tensei.

And now the GT3 will get the same test the TSR3 did when it arrives.  The difference being this Tensei is approximately ten grams lighter than the other Tensei, and twenty grams lighter than the UST Elements Chrome.  So there’s a pretty big spread there, especially factoring in the head weight distribution in the GT3.  The real difference, of course, is TSR3, w/Tensei was self-fit; GT3, w/Tensei was professionally-fit.

Excited to get these together head to head for another showdown. 🏌️

There's a valid argument there's been far more advancement in shaft technology than head technology in the past handful of years so if the fittings don't include high end shafts, it's kind of doing a disservice.  After you were fitted and received your club, you'd still be wondering how it'd compare to all the premium Ventus, GD, etc shafts available out there.  Which may require a different head or loft since they typically reduce the spin and/or launch angle.

Would seem justifiable to offer the option to test premium shafts with the notion that there's a charge for the premium shafts if one were to go that route.  But at least then, they really know how a standard shaft would compare to a premium one.  Wouldn't be left wondering.

Just popping back to check in. I am so excited for my fitting - I can't believe it is still 9 days away 😭. I think @Rory4Pres has a good point. If the fitter has anything available that is exotic or premium I will ask to see if I am at least allowed to hit it and get some numbers on it so I can post comparisons for everyone following this thread.  I myself have never actually hit a Ventus of any kind nor any of the current GD Tour AD offerings (plz don't revoke my WRX card) so I would be curious to scratch that itch if it is at all possible.

Good call @bigdriveandy - I'm assuming its left to the fitter and what they have available / their fitting "process".  This will be my first Titleist-specific fitting, so I'm most curious on how Chris (my fitter) thinks about head / shaft / hosel / weight settings (assuming in that order).

I'm going to be shaft-agnostic - I LOVE the feel of my TR, but I'm not 100% sure its whats "best" for me.  And as we know, there is some blend of science (the data) and art (what does it feel like in your hands), so I'm going to leave it up to him / Titleist to help me get there.

I was listening to a Sweet Spot podcast recently on clubfitting, and the subject of premium shafts came up.  The takeaway I got was that premium "upgrade" shafts are not necessarily better than stock options, just more consistent tolerance-wise within the line.  In other words, once fit for a specific shaft, you might not get exactly what you order.  It will be close, but maybe not quite the same.  But with a premium shaft, you can be pretty sure it's going to be closer.  The question is, how close is close enough, and is it worth the extra $??? for that assurance.

Regardless, in my fitting, since I was purposely ignoring what was handed to me, I have no idea if premium shafts were ever in the mix...although there were a lot of pretty colors there that day. 😉

I absolutely think this is a money take. If you ever read any of Russ Ryden’s reviews on golf shafts he simplistically kind of philosophizes that the numbers are what they are when you measure anything objective about them. Shafts with similar numbers in terms of cpm, bend point, EI curve, weight, and torque are going to perform similar regardless of what’s painted on them. I think velocore and other technologies are “real” in the sense they provide some benefit, but it has nothing to do with being “better” from a fitting perspective. Most of my experience with high end shafts has led me to conclude that the biggest difference is feel. From what I understand it’s mostly the ratio of carbon layers to resin that affects feel. It’s more expensive to add layers of carbon than layers of glue, so in the end the premium stuff just might have higher % of graphite vs epoxy. I digress. Still, excited to see what they let me play with. I’m agnostic when it comes to brand generally, so I have no inherent biases leading up to my fitting. Adding to that, the last time I swung a titleist driver was a 910d3 so this should be quite an experience!

So overall, on average, we found 8 more yards distance and, more importantly, much  tighter left to right dispersion.  We couldn’t completely get my spin numbers where we would have liked, but Matt was satisfied that that was more of a swing issue than anything about the driver setup.

Too much spin?

Yes, but again, Matt thought it was more of a swing issue, as I do have a consistent 3-4 degree out to in swing path that’s often paired with a slightly open face at impact…even the best fitted clubs can’t fix everything. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well said @stryper and its been something I've been noodling on recently in the lead-up to my fitting.  Really curious how Chris can rein in my swing faults into something that is more consistent.  Today, I'm pretty pleased with my driver from a pure distance standpoint, but I'm not entirely sure I'm there with dispersion consistency.  And while I think most of that is my swing, I'm curious if my fitter can make some adjustments to shaft / swing / hosel settings to narrow the window just a bit.

I love reading these reviews!  I use to be skeptical of fittings too and never wanted to spend the money. I am a firm believer of fittings now but it definitely matters who your fitter is. I get fit for pretty much every club I buy now. I’ll tweak swing weight and hosel settings at home but trying different heads and shafts is so much fun!!
Congrats to all the testers!

I totally agreed - even though stock shafts had similar performance, there was a certain comfortability and confidence that I had in swinging with the Ventus Blue than the stock 1K Black or other options. Looking back, I'm so glad I did because it's been the best shaft for me that I could imagine. I would've loved to try the 1K Pro White, but they didn't have that one available to try.

Really interested in following this thread. I’m a titleist guy at the top of the bag. Currently gaming a TSi3 8* with Ventus Black and 915f 3w. The driver was fitted and 3w was not, and is the next in line

to replace.

My driver swing has changed this year and I’m not hitting it as high as I use to, so I’ll be looking to try the GT in a different setup and see if there is some improvement!

Wow, today was an absolute BLAST.  Shout-out to my fitter Chris (a fellow WRXer) who provided an incredible fitting experience.  While I await Trackman data (Chris said he would send that over later), I'll give a brief summary of the fitting.

To start, I would categorize this as my first "true" fitting - I've been fitted for specific clubs in the past, but it was done in a big-box retailer and definitely more of a rushed experience.  However, Chris' fitting process was much more "methodical", which I appreciated and learned SO MUCH more than past experiences.

After arriving on site about 45 minutes early, I proceeded to warm up near the Titliest tent (Chris was doing a wedge fitting right before, so I had some good warm-up time).  Shout-out to Sung-Jae Im, who was warming up behind me - pretty cool to see one of the best this close!image.jpeg.05ca08a1bbedf1379c39a13c9161128d.jpegimage.jpeg.de9ec809665b78a3856775be4452b67a.jpeg

After warming up, we were ready to go - as others have noted, Titleist has an incredible setup for these fittings - tons of head, shaft, & weight options on-site, along with a Trackman setup for data.

As suspected, Chris had me hit a couple balls on my current gamer to get baseline figures while interviewing me on my game (typical ball flight, where the miss comes into play, typical carry distance, etc).  After establishing a baseline, he wanted to dive a bit more into my setup - my Paradym is 9 degrees (I typically fly the ball pretty high with a standard draw shape) and my thoughts on current shaft.  As discussed previously, I told Chris I'm coming into this fitting open minded, but he noted that my current setup #s were positive and he wanted to use the TR Blue as a starting point.

I'll pause on my summary for now - the Trackman data will REALLY shed some light on the progression between heads / shafts / setups, but I'll close this post with one finding: the Ventus TR Blue was far and away the BEST option for me (and we went through A LOT of options).  However, even though shaft didn't change, my selected GT setup found some incredible gains against my gamer.

More to come...

Awesome write up, something special about seeing that Titleist tent…can’t wait to hear what’s coming next!!!

It really is cool.  They come to my course once a month and i assist Jake -their fitter each time.  I am completely set with my GT setup.  But that doesn’t keep me from tinkering with different shafts and iron combos each time.  Ha

I’m already anxious for next summer’s iron release 😬

Alright, spill the beans 😂

But seriously, with how in-depth and thorough my fitting was with Chris, I’d be hard pressed to go a different route when I update my irons (which will prob be next year).

Same, between the new Ts and Srixon ZXIs, I’m pretty excited about the new irons coming out next year.

Yep. Already reached out to my Srixon rep.  I wsnt the ZXI as soon as available.  I’ll play them until the new T series or whatever it is called is released.

i have not head back yet but I don’t expect to be able to pre order until early December.  That’s what it was for the MKii
