MEMBER REVIEWS: Titleist GT Driver & Fairway Wood Member Testing | See What Members Are Saying

Sunday delivery - was very excited to see this on my doorstep unannounced after church this morning!

Looks like the Driver is still showing a ship date of 10/21, but crossing fingers it comes a bit sooner.  Regardless, I have a round scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to put the 4 & 7 woods through their paces (planning to sit my driver to force a bit more tee shots with the fairways).  Sharing some unboxing photos and a short video of one of the best sounds in golf 🤣

Initial feedback -

- Interesting packing method (head was covered in light bubble wrap) but headcover was placed on other side of box.  Box was a bit beat-up, but the clubs showed no signs of damage.

- I was on the fence on a couple different grip options - I currently game Tour Velvet+4s, but I'm not sold on the +4s.  I've always been a fan of Lamkins, but the UTx cords weren't available, so I decided to go back to an old faithful (MCCs).  Glad I did, one of my favorite grips and the white / black combo is timeless.

- Glad to see the correct head settings from the factory - in the past, from other OEMs, the collar has generally been set at the default setting.  Nice touch Titleist.

- Overall, these look SHARP - really am a fan of the crown shape & color.  When I first saw the "GT" marking on the top, I was unsure if this would be distracting - it’s not and almost blends in with the shiny top.

Yea - I’ve been carrying a 3W / 7W combo for some time, so the gapping made sense for my bag.  Very excited to get these out of the course this week!

A few notes on the above data:

This was a driver-only shootout on an HD Golf Simulator, and while not Trackman, the numbers do compare favorably.

Split sessions, 5 shots each, starting with the GT3, 5 with the TSR3, then repeat for a total of 20 shots.

Distance winner from today’s battle was

the GT3, with an average increase of 6.03 yards.

Fairways were not a part of this session.

Separate results for those will be posted in the coming days.

Both drivers and fairways will be tested indoor repeatedly over the next few months.

Good stuff @bigdriveandy - I noticed you went with the TR in your fairways, so I'm curious how you made that distinction between those & the driver.  Since I game the TR currently, my fitter and I felt it was the right profile across all clubs.

Great write-up on your fitting experience!

The fitter basically described the TR as an S+ flex version of the Ventus, so he was trying to marry up my swing speed with the right performance, I think. I usually play X in driver and stiff in everything else so it was nice that the TR was a bit stiffer than I’m used to without going all the way to to Xstiff. Honestly I wanted to go even heavier in the 5 wood but Titleist doesn’t offer the 8-s TR Blue.

Last Friday I had my GT fitting at Viniterra Golf Club outside of Richmond, VA. I apologize for not sharing results sooner but  since my fitting I have volunteered for 5 days at the US Mid-Am here in Richmond, and then immediately traveled out of town for a 3 day 2-man match play event so I haven't actually sat down at a computer since my fitting.

I met with Kevin Moore, the area rep for Titleist, and the Director of Instruction at Viniterra, Josh, who was also doing fittings for members alongside Kevin.

Here was the setup for the fitting! Never seen so many premium shafts in my life. (I am not a person who gets fit for clubs often).

image.png.3c283d9c6e8866d9a727a96731928b45.png

Warmed up with about 10 8 iron shots. He had me hit a baseline of 5 drives to get a feel for my swing and asked me about my good drives and misses. Asked how long I had been playing my current driver and what I liked and disliked about it. I also want to throw in that I had not played since labor day weekend and the day before my fitting I went to hit a small bucket of balls and did not hit anything particularly well. On top of that I tweaked my back somehow and woke up barely being able to bend over without pain. So lets just say my swing was nowhere near dialed in.

So we started the fitting - he handed me my first GT build which was a 9* GT3 with Tensei Black 1k 65 X flex. He had it in A1 setting with the weight in the middle.  Immediately hit about 3 duck hooks and he asked me to hand it back to him. He handed me back the same configuration head with a Ventus Velocore Blue 6-x. Immediately showed improvement but balls were still diving low and falling out of the sky. He switched to a 10* head and it really came alive for me. Once I adjusted to the feel and the DRASTIC difference in crown appearance from my beloved G400 Max, I was hitting these soft butter cuts that were just staying in the air forever. After each shot he relayed my ballspeed, spin and carry distance to me. To my amazement, he said I was picking up about 3-4 mph of ballspeed and about 10 yards of carry with the GT. Dispersion was still not quite where I wanted it to be (I am a 4 HCP but driving is a strength of my game so I know what ballflight and launch window I should be capable of and dispersion is probably the last thing I am willing to trade off). So he progressively started tinkering with the weight settings and the adapter settings until there was a really predictable pattern and as he said "ballspeed was protected from my toe miss" by him moving the weighting a little more out to the toe area. I ended up with a GT3 10* with the Ventus Blue 6-x. It was my first time hitting a Titleist Driver since the 910 series and my first experience ever with a Ventus velocore model. I did ask Kevin about the other exotics that he had on offer, which was basically every current model in the Tour AD lineup and every Ventus and Ventus TR (no 2024 models yet). To which he replied "there is a reason why so many pros play the Ventus, because if it works for you, there is literally nothing better." I wasn't in a position to disagree really since he basically told me that my driver numbers were as close to perfect as could reasonably be expected for someone with my HCP level.

Here is a screenshot of my best with my Ping G400 Max (smoked pull draw) vs. my best shot of the GT3 (towering roasty fade).

image.png.e70d4082d7cc1a4623bfd761e5deaaf7.pngimage.png.49603af632cf195a704288d2a9b4b367.png

We moved on to the fairway fitting next. Essentially I told him that my expectations for 3 woods are totally unreasonable given my track record with them. Ideally, the only time I use fairway metals off the tee are in situations where the shape of the hole or the landing area cuts off at less than 270 yards. But I do use fairway metals to attack par 5s in 2. So I need something versatile enough to hit off the ground and the tee, which will offer reliability and enough accuracy to hit a green from far away. I have not found a fairway wood since the ping i25 that does those things equally well. However my beloved i25 just dont have the ballspeed to keep up with anything modern, especially with contact that wanders away from center. My miss is usually thin with FW so I have to be careful and I had plenty of doubts with how the GT metals would perform. So Kevin handed me the GT3 15* with the Ventus TR blue 7-S. First shot was dead center, 255 yards, straight as an arrow with perfect trajectory. Second shot was like a carbon copy of the first except 5 yards further. Third shot was exactly as perfect as the first two. I jokingly put the club in my bag and told him we were done here, I will just keep this one. It was literally the most surreal experience I have ever had hitting a 3 wood. I understand that my knowledge of modern FW woods is rather limited because though I won a QI10 fairway wood at an outing earlier this year, I had not tried any other newer fairway woods since the Callaway Epic Speed, which I did not get along with. My 5 wood is an M5 titanium that I bought for $45 off of facebook marketplace when my i25 broke earlier this summer. I can't say too much bad about the performance but I hated the look and feel of it. We initially tried the GT3 18* next but since Kevin didn't have the actual 5 wood shaft for it, he told me to choke down on it. I hate choking down on clubs and of course the tip trimming was .5" less than standard, so the results were less awesome but still way better than my M5. Through our continued conversation I was hoping to see a bit higher ballflight from my 5 wood so he had me try the Gt2. To my surprise the GT2 shape I actually liked better than the GT3 overall. The ballflight the GT2 provided was indeed higher and straighter so I was more than satisfied with that. At this point I had probably hit close to 70-80 balls and with my back being what it was, I politely asked if there was anything else he thought would perform better but I was happy to hear that he didn't think so. In summary, here is what my order ended up looking like. image.png.2c950718debd77bd50d3ee41c47604b4.png

Overall the experience I had was second to none. Huge shout out to Kevin, Viniterra Golf Club, Jacquelyn at Titleist who worked the magic behind the scenes and most of all GolfWRX. Candidly, I am not a man of great means and would never have been able to have this experience if it weren't for GolfWRX. As I said before I have been a member for almost 2 decades and it continually amazes me how many cool opportunities, friendships, and how much I have gotten to learn through being a member here.

Great review @bigdriveandy - Good gains in ballspeed and carry yards.

Not getting a chance to try out the Ventus is probably the biggest regret I have from my fitting.

First round of Fairway battles are complete.  The order of play was 915Fd/GT3 off a tee; then 915Fd/GT3 off the deck.  Five balls with each club.

I haven’t really had the chance to do the parsing, but initially it looks like a slight edge goes toward the GT3.  It’s worth noting, too, that I’ve always played my

fairway one inch shorter than standard, but the GT3 is standard length.

So here’s how this round shook out:

I can tell anyone on the fence about trying these clubs to just quote the old Nike commercial and JUST DO IT.  Titleist was not spewing marketing speak when they said GT stood for Generational Technology.  I'd probably done 25 (at least) individual driver fittings for MANY different brands and individual models since I'd had my Epic Flash Tour Certified Driver for 2+ years and was getting tired of it spinning at 3,200 RPM for backspin and ungodly amounts side to side with anything that wasn't a perfectly flush strike.  However, despite that, nothing I tried up to the AiSmoke TD 8° with a Ventus TR Blue 6S had come close to knocking it out of the bag, and by then, I had the 1st of what would become THREE Titleist GT fittings scheduled.  The 1st was indoors at Golf Galaxy, and kind of sucked due to a lack of shaft options.  The 2nd was outdoors, and while I didn't like what the fitter tried to push me into (GT3 with 2 heavy weights and a stupid heavy TX shaft), but it did help me decide to wait and not buy the AiSmoke quite yet.

Well, as for the 3rd Titleist GT fitting...after I warmed up, I was handed the 8° GT2 with a Graphite Design Tour AD-VF 6S shaft...oh my...yeah, once he added the 11 gram weight at the back instead of the 9 gram weight, I couldn't really get my credit card out of the wallet fast enough at that point, and I'd been resisting buying anything new for the better part of 2 1/2 years and had gotten a rep around town for being ridiculously picky...and then this new fitter gets me fitted in 10 minutes. 😃

In short, in just a couple of rounds, I can see already that by the time I spend a few more weeks with this driver, I'll be the rest of the way dialed in on it, be hitting almost every fairway (or close enough that it won't really matter), and will be back on a pathway to lowering my handicap again.  I had it down to 3 and was headed lower last summer before a couple of unfortunate circumstances combined with work being stupid busy kept me from practicing or even playing much from August - December...and then it started raining, so I basically didn't play outside more than a few times again until April when I went to Phoenix for work...

Great data @stryper - curious to see how the GT shakes out once you get more used to it!.

Was able to get 18 in this afternoon - unfortunately did not have time for the range prior to my round, so I went to the first tee cold.  Since I'm still waiting on my driver, I decided to carry my new 4W & 7Ws at the top of the bag (and shelve my current driver).

All-in-all, I came away VERY impressed with both, particularly the 4W.  Based on my Arccos, I averaged 222 yards (all 4W shots), with the longest coming in at 242 yards.  Given this was my first time hitting the clubs, I was pretty impressed with these numbers, especially accuracy (8 fairways hit vs 4 left, but not OB).

Planning to get in an extended range session in the coming days with the new clubs and my Mevo.

Stay tuned!

Yeah, I think both the driver and fairway need a bit of a shakedown cruise for me to get a better feel for things.  Static data is fine, but on-course is where it counts, and I haven’t had a chance to get there yet.  I have a tournament coming up in a few days, so that should give me a pretty good idea of where we stand right now.  I’m keeping my expectations in check, but  really optimistic.

On a side note, I put my driver in the hands of a PGA teaching pro friend of mine—a Callaway staffer—and he was absolutely striping it.  Bullet shots, dead straight, cutting into a headwind.  His only “miss” was a frozen rope, maybe ten yards left of target, with no side movement at all.  Really impressive to see.

I played a walking 9 after work yesterday...no real warmup...

Our 1st course of 2 plays nasty into a north wind, which was the case yesterday.  1st hole - 275 into the fairway.  2nd hole - 275 into the fairway.  3rd hole (with the wind) - little bullet flighted shot / fairway finder on a hard dogleg 285...into the fairway.  4 is a par 3 and 5 is a short par with the fairway cut off at 240, so no driver, as is #6.  7th hole - hit driver 275 through fairway but had 85 to the green down wind.  Bounced the wedge at the pin and it spun and almost held, but the greens are like smooth concrete.  Still made par.  #8 is the 2nd par 3...bringing me to #9, where I had the most God-awful swing of the day...should have been totally OB left in someone's front yard...but I was playable and able to knock a ball around 1 tree and under another and end up in front of the green.  I didn't get up and down for par, but a bogey is better than a maybe double bogey and a likely triple bogey if I went OB on that very tight hole back into a strong headwind.  Yeah, my putting and wedge play SUCKED yesterday, but the GT2 was a beast.

First time on-course for the GT3’s.

Windy conditions at an unfamiliar venue—did not necessarily bring my best swing out early.  Still, the driver performed well, outside a couple of complete smothers.  Everything else was long (for me) and pretty much finding fairways all day.

Fairway wood was a pleasant surprise, too.  I was initially reluctant to pull it on the first couple of long approaches, favoring my TSR3 hybrid and accepting a few less yards as a result.  But a few holes into it, max distance became an imperative, so I pulled the cover off the GT3 and gave it a rip.  It was a beautiful, controlled flight, and that shot was repeated several other times throughout the round.  Super easy to launch off the deck.

Again, the course was unfamiliar to me, with lots of blind shots, so the comfort level was never really there.  But after the first couple of holes, it was nice knowing the top end of the bag was on point, and I did not miss the security that I’d grown accustomed to with my TSR3 driver and 915Fd fairway.

So I’m still in the “getting to know you” phase with the GT3’s, but really enjoying the honeymoon period.

Sim league starts next week, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they perform without the vagaries of bad bounces, variable winds, and  winter/leaf rules to deal with, just straight forward ball striking.  Hit it and see where it lands…figuratively speaking, of course.

More impressions to follow. 😉

One thought - you could possibly put lead tape of 10g under the grip to get the weight up, and then swing weight match?

Things have been a little slow here the last few days, so I thought I’d provide another update.  Took the TSR3 and GT3 inside again for a comparison, using the same basic methodology as before—alternating rounds of five shots starting with the TSR3, then the GT3, then repeat again for a total of twenty shots captured.  Of note, this session took place on a different HDGolf simulator at my club.  For whatever reason, this sim seems to record clubhead speeds 3-5mph slower than the other, which shows up in today’s numbers.

First up, TSR3:

Conclusion:

As you can see, in terms of distance, ball speed, launch angle and spin, there was not a whole lot of difference between the two clubs today.  So, while no clear winner was determined, the GT3 did lag behind in the final round by a couple of yards.

So even though I would love to give glowing reports on awesome distance gains, as I promised in my initial posts, my reviews would be unbiased.  And I will, of course, continue my laborious 😉 research, perhaps trying different methodologies as they occur to me.

And finally some bonus coverage, apart from raw numbers.  At the end of the day, I decided to switch from data capture to more of a shot making approach.  In this case, each round was only four shots, starting again with the TSR3.  That shootout looked like this:

The four shots with the TSR3 did stray a bit farther right of center, while the GT3 stayed a bit more on line.  And all eight shots would have been more than acceptable on course.  But here the edge does go ro GT3.  🤷🏻‍♂️

Great stuff as always @stryper - appreciate your transparency on the approach.  And while there doesn't seem to be a big difference in carry / speed (which is a bit surprising), I'd argue the dispersion numbers are promising.  I'd be very curious over time if your "misses" with the GT3 stray a bit less than the TSR3 - this is what the figure above would seemingly indicate.

On my side, I received confirmation that my GT3 driver has finally shipped and will arrive this weekend!!!  I've been traveling this week, but I hope to continue testing both it & the fairways next week at the range and through my MLM2.  Stay tuned!

I demo'd these a couple of times, and while i did think they were a fantastic offering, i am a HUGE fan of the TSR line. I actually preferred the feel of my current TSR2 and didn't really see much difference in the numbers.

I might grab a GT2 fairway just because my TSR2 is a + model which is a bit more limited in it's versatility.

I am pretty much optimal with my TSR2 driver. And i just found that such a great release also

Dispersion was specifically addressed during my fitting, and I could see the window narrowing with the different adjustments Matt was making.  Of course, this was outdoor, so I was really only watching ball flight, while he was monitoring that and everything else that day.  As mentioned before, he had noted a small-ish increase in distance and we both ended the day satisfied with the outcome.  I didn’t ask at the time, but it’s possible that my own prior self-fitting was in the ballpark, distance-wise, and I really only needed some tweaking for dispersion.

And I think it should go without saying that the TSR3 is an awesome driver.  In no way does that fact take anything away from the GT3…to the contrary, it actually makes the GT3’s task even harder, makes any gains from there that

much more impressive.  Misses will always happen; minimizing those is no mean feat.

Sim league starts today.  So while not outside on a “real” course, this will mark the GT3s’ first exposure to a somewhat competitive environment—the fairway will also see action, as today’s course does have some longer par 5’s, where will likely be needed.

More results to follow!

Okay, first sim round is in.  9 holes, 7 drivers, 5 fairways hit.  (The misses were negligible and still in play). Distances were within the range of what I’ve been seeing in my shoot outs.  Ball flight was either straight or baby fade throughout the round.  In fact, my playing partner commented toward the end, I could watch that (flight) all day long.  😉

Here’s the scorecard:
