Wolf Creek in sim league today.  Six of seven fairways hit, little push right on the miss.  Of course I missed both greens on the par three’s, but kinda hard to blame the GT3’s for those.  🤷🏻‍♂️

anyone else's 3/4 wood feel very weird? I hit the driver and 7 wood fine, but the 3/4 wood I keep topping and the sound/feel is so hollow/weird, i wonder if my head is broken or the shaft is broken

Very interesting feedback - while my driver & fairways sound distinctly different, I really love the muted "thwunk" (no other way to spell that out 😄) of the GTs.

Based on FedEx, my weights should be arriving tomorrow - excited to put these in the driver to see if I can get some performance back.

Final sim round of the season.  A balky back and lead-side shoulder pain (not sure what’s going on there) caused some serious bad, tentative swings.  Still both driver and fairway stayed in play for a respectable outcome.  This was at Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand.

(Probably going to take a little time off now to let things settle down a bit physically.)

Totally fair - I'm also going through a couple small swing changes that have caused me to be more cognizant of position at the top of my swing.  Regardless, I'm still very happy with performance overall, and pretty confident adding a bit more heft to the head should solve my current woes.

Glad to hear you are still ecstatic with your stock setups!

Curious for the other testers, how are things going overall with your clubs?  Any big takeaways / adjustments you've had to make as you've gotten more used to the GTs (tagging @timbo08@bigdriveandy@AUTIGER07)?

Still thawing out of winter here in Chicago but the GT3 fairway is firmly locked in the bag. It’s about as good as I’ve hit in a long time and even though the forgiveness is down from the TSR2, the upside more than makes up for it.

The GT3 driver has been a different story. At this point it’s probably a confidence thing but I’ve tried 3 different shafts (fitted Riptide and a CK Pro White and Fuji 757 that I had in prior Titleist drivers) and nothing has “stuck”. I love the look of it and on a good swing the sound / feel is still top notch but for every 10 drives, 1-2 are solid and the rest are a mix between low left bullets or fanning it high right. I want to give it a good workout once spring comes in so I can give a good on-course test but if I was to play for money tomorrow the Cobra would be in the bag.

Interesting…I went back a few pages and looked at your initial fitting experience, and in terms of ball speed, spin, and carry the GT3 driver was a clear winner over your Cobra.  In the wild, however, you feel more comfortable with the Cobra.  I’m from downstate Illinois, so I’m well aware of how sh*tty this winter has been, and I’m curious where and how you have been getting your reps with the GT3?  And I wonder, too, if the GT3 might fare better with more extensive play as the weather warms up?

(Not a criticism, just throwing it out there for discussion.)

For quick reference, your initial fitting results:

In terms of "winter reps", for the times when it is really cold (< 20*), windy, or snow on the ground, there is an indoor Trackman simulator nearby that I'll hit up for practice sessions. When it is warmer or the wind is down, St. Andrews in West Chicago has a heated outdoor range with TopTracer built into each bay. The range balls are average but it's a good spot to at least see the ballflight outdoors vs smashing into a net.

The increased numbers in terms of ballspeed / distance that I saw at the fitting are still there with the GT3. For example, today I had 4-5 balls with the GT3 that were all 3-4 MPH above anything the Cobra could muster. The difference is that I could put 90% of the Cobra's drives in about a 15-20 yard area whereas the GT3 only had probably 40% in that same size area. I agree that it'll be interesting to see what happens in the Spring when the body starts to warm up a little bit.

Thanks for sharing @AUTIGER07 and appreciate the transparency.  Sounds like you are dealing with a similar set of trends that I'm experiencing currently.

Finally received my track weights late last week, so I'm curious to pop those in and play around with the additional weight to see if it helps my current driver woes.  More to come...

UPDATE to my previous testing. I found someone locally who was looking to swap a GT3 head for his GT2 so, given the struggles I was having to find consistency and the flight window I want with it I went ahead and swapped. Night and day different. GT2 is much much easier to elevate, so it spins enough for my ballflight to hold it's start line and it doesn't curve as much. Also noticeably less punishing on off center hits. I haven't played with the setup at all, just plugged my same Ventus Blue into the new head in the same adapter setting and went on my way. Only have one range session with it but it fixed all the issues I was having with the GT3 - low looks, not enough spin, and generally lower than expected ball flight.

Some intial conclusions: I wish the titleist rep would have allowed me to hit the GT2 driver instead of talking me into GT3 straight away. For those of you spending money on a fitting, please remember to advocate for yourself and if you are curious, don't feel like you are being a pain/burden. Ask all the questions and be discerning if something feels surprising or different than you expect! I am not a titleist fitter but I have professionally been a fitter (about 15 years ago though) and I suspect if I was still fitting that I would not recommend the GT3 to golfers with significantly positive AOA. The CG is simply too far forward. One other aspect that I learned from Clay Long's instagram posts is that the GT woods measured quite open (3-4*) so it is likely that if you want your driver to play square to target you may need to use the adapter to close the face a bit. I closed the face of the driver and fairways which added a little loft to it but mainly it really helped my start lines be more accurate to where I was trying to aim.

I still cannot say enough about the GT fairways though. Some of the playing partners I have had have been shocked at the distance and accuracy of my 3 wood off the tee. A couple of holes during my last round I hit it and my Ping G430 Max driver and the driver only went about 10-15 yards farther. I am eager to see if the GT2 driver is a bit hotter than the G430 Max but from my one range session I would surmise that the ball speeds are at least as good. Between GT2 and G430 Max I wouldn't say the GT2 is automatically earth-shatteringly better right away but if the ballspeed is better I will put it in the bag as I want all the distance I can possibly get this year.

One exciting aspect is that I had not been able to play my normal ball (Bridgestone Tour BX) with the GT3 in the bag bc too low spin, but I think the GT2 will be a good match for that ball.

Interesting feedback!  Curious on your feel comment - I'm assuming you are using the same shaft setup between the two?  I've never gamed a TSi, but I haven't sensed a ton of "feel" difference between my GT and Paradym drivers.  However, on the FWs, there is a marked difference in feel, but I attribute a lot of that to shaft differences (Ventus TR Blue to Hzrdus RDX Blue).

On sound, I'm a huge fan of muted "twack" on the GTs - I've gamed a lot of woods that fall on the other side of the sound spectrum (Epic Flash being one of them) and I believe Titleist nailed this one.  But again, sound & feel are definitely super subjective here...

Having played a few rounds with GT4 I have to say I cannot quite turn it over as easily as I can with TSi4. I am used to seeing the ball move quite a bit right to left and have learned to play my course that way and with GT4 I am seeing much much less movement.

It is slightly concerning to me and maybe because I just got it so late in the season I'm not quite used to it but so far it has proved much more difficult to control. TSi4 was point and shoot and even on heel misses I was able to get the ball to move right to left. With GT my miss is snap hook or block to the right. Rarely did I block TSi4. I don't know if it is ball position or what, but I don't feel great about it right now. Will need to hit more balls with it first but am toying around with the idea of putting TSi4 back in the bag and maybe going with a GT2 or something which is so far away from what I ever thought I'd be saying. Really thought the transition was going to be smoother but so far it has certainly not been

I've never hit the TSi4, and my game is nowhere near advanced to game the GT4, but I was able to hit a couple balls with it during my fitting and found it very challenging to keep the ball in the range.  Sorry to hear you the transition isn't going well!

Quick update on my driver tweaks - I installed the heavier weight in the GT3 track last week and was able to get one range session in.  Overall, I think we are getting closer to ideal, but its going to take little getting used to with the heavier weight in the front of the head.  Regardless, when its working, its easily the longest driver I've used.  More to come...

I am for sure going to play around with the weights - what a great idea. I have Blue, Green, Black, and White. Going to also see what happens when I put it in the 2.5 model with heavy weight back to see if that helps me turn things over a little more - hope that works and I bet it will.

Another thing could be ball position - I think the sessions with GT4 ball was way too forward....

  • 2 weeks later...

At the risk of boring our followers—but keeping with my commitment as a tester—I thought I’d throw a few more numbers up here.  I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I’d be shutting things down for a bit, and I did.  I had only one windy, abbreviated range session since then, and very little time in the gym.  So, it came as no surprise that things were down a touch, but probably less so than I might have expected.  Heading into Spring/Summer now, I’m looking forward to what the GT3’s will show me on the course.  (Didn’t record my fairway swings, but they were especially satisfying.)

Thanks for sharing @stryper - looking forward to seeing you get some on-course testing shortly!

Some updates on my end - the fairways are still FIRMLY in the bag after some recent golf trips.   In fact, the 4W has become my de-facto tee shot on my short-ish / tight par 4s and become a predictable baby draw at around 220-230 yards.

On the other end, I'm still in tinkering mode with my driver - when I'm striking the ball well, its a beast.  Unfortunately, I'm still fighting some pretty hard swing issues that are preventing full confidence at this time.  Recently, I've started to choke up 1.5" on the grip to offer a bit more control / feel of the clubhead and early results are promising.  Hoping to get a couple range sessions in the coming weeks to see if things are holding true with the shaft adjustment.

It’s been an interesting evolution with my 3w.  Played it confidently on longer approaches all winter in the sim, but hadn’t had much experience with it off the tee.  So when I did tee it up it was always a bit awkward, especially with the setup.  Lately, however, as I’ve had more time to work it out on the range (inside and out) it’s become remarkably easy to hit.  Basically set myself up like driver—tee is lower, of course—and swing away.  Then I get a nice launch and a piercing ball flight, with very good distance that slots in perfectly between my GT3 driver and TSR3 hybrids.  And with that, my top of the bag is more set than it’s ever been.

Yep - it can be awkward at first if you don't hit a lot of tee balls with a 3W.  Again, I use mine in specific circumstances (narrow fairway, hard turning dog-legs), but its a great off the tee club.

After a couple dedicated practice sessions, I think the GT3 is starting to find its place in the bag again.  I believe it boils down to a combination of swing adjustments and upping the track weight a bit that has allowed me to better sync my timing and path.  Over the last couple sessions - my dispersion is getting a bit more "normal" and distance is starting to creep back up again.

Will provide some data from upcoming sessions as I've (hopefully) come out of a little driver funk - feel free to ask any other questions on the test!

One additional update to provide - in the spirit of tinkering (this is GolfWRX right?), I’m throwing a new driver shaft into the testing mix. A buddy is lending me a cut down (44”) Diamana WB 63X for this test.

Will this lead to good results?  Possibly 🤔 But at least I’ll document this new wrinkle to the review here - excited to try out!

Ok, quick update on today's round - as I've noted before, the driver is coming back into its good graces as I've incorporated a couple specific swing changes that are yielding good results.   Prior to the round, I flipped back and forth between the Ventus & WB, ultimately going with the WB.  Given its shorter length, I feel a bit more in control on tee shots even though I'm probably sacrificing a couple yards.

Good morning and happy Saturday GolfWRX!  Providing some updates from some recent rounds this week - let’s just say the GTs are still performing as intended / expected.  I don’t say this enough but thanks again to @GolfWRX_Official and Titleist for the opportunity. Onto the updates…

Driver - I’m still in tinkering phase, but I’m trying to find some good results with a couple small modifications.  The biggest change is the track weight - I’ve increased the weight 4 grams (my fitter, Chris, recommended I don’t increase too much). It’s helped give me a bit more feel in the head at transition and slow down my tempo a little bit (to avoid the quick hands). I’m still going back and forth between the original Ventus TR Blue and the Diamana WB, as I’m finding a little bit more success with the WB (probably due to the 1.5” shorter length). I still prefer the feel of the Ventus, so I may just cut it down and go that route.  Distance wise, I’m still happy with the results (averaging ~245 carry), but would like to get a bit more control in dispersion. More to come as I continue testing on the range.

Fairways - Still incredibly happy with both the 4W and 7W. As I’ve chronicled recently, I’ve started to use my 4W a good amount off the tee when the fairway is tight. Off turf, both clubs continue to be great assets into long par 5s.

For those considering the GTs, do it. Even though I’ve had issues with driver, I’d guess 99.9% is swing related, as good swings are very much rewarded.

More to come!

@ChrisATL, any idea where you are on GT swing weights with the various shafts?  I swapped from TSR2 to GT2 and was completely chasing the right feel, multiple shafts/weights, before bailing and going back to TSR2.  I agree with your assessment that GT is superior in sound/feel, I just had problem with getting the right weighting.  I will say, I think TSR2 is one of their best ever and I've had Titleist drivers since the 905 series.

That’s a great question and something I’ve never actually investigated. There was a pretty big difference between it and my paradym, but I’ve never looked at swing weights.

Nice update BTW, and think we have similar preferences. Just food for thought, I think GT is a fantastic product but I'm super sensitive to weight/length/feel and never really found it with a GT2. Optimal for me is 45", D4ish swing weight and white board/low low shaft profile. Current gamer is TSR2, 45", D4 swing weight with Ventus Black 6S Velocore+.  Been really good last 4-5 months.

I know nobody asked but I just actually measured and changed my swingweights last week on my GT2 driver and GT2/3 fairways.

Driver was stock at C9. Changed to a lighter grip and it went to D1. A couple of strips of lead tape took it to D3.

Fairway woods came in at D0. Changed to a lighter grip and they went to D2. Lead taped them to D3.

For reference my irons are D5 and my wedges are D6 (50,56) and D7 (60).

I hear you - that's sort of what I have, in the GT2 10* with a Ventus blue+ 6X - playing 45" at D4.5, tipped 1/2". It's just about the perfect combo of lowish spin and forgiveness.
