MEMBER REVIEWS: Titleist GT Driver & Fairway Wood Member Testing | See What Members Are Saying

I know nobody asked but I just actually measured and changed my swingweights last week on my GT2 driver and GT2/3 fairways.

Driver was stock at C9. Changed to a lighter grip and it went to D1. A couple of strips of lead tape took it to D3.

Fairway woods came in at D0. Changed to a lighter grip and they went to D2. Lead taped them to D3.

For reference my irons are D5 and my wedges are D6 (50,56) and D7 (60).

Mine came in at D1. I had to order some extra weights off eBay and a +6 was able to bring mine to D4.5 which is pretty close to what I like. I found that I needed to add a little head weight to get the spin numbers up a touch, plus heavier head weight typically brings more speed at the bottom.

Original rigging on my came in at D1.  As i mentioned before, I’m not really sensitive to swing weight, so I’ve felt no need to go chasing anything different.  (Fairway is at C9.5.)

Yep - this is where I'm at (D4) w/ the new weight.  I needed the extra weight for feel (I kept "losing" the head in the top of my backswing) so this has helped.  Thanks for the advice @bigdriveandy!

Been "in the lab" for the last ~8 weeks and wanted to give an update on where things stand at the moment. Since my last post in mid-March, I've been hitting the range ~2-3x per week, have played 6 9-hole rounds, and have tracked pretty much every shot with the drivers and fairway woods shown during that timeframe. Basically I've been the dork at the range who enters all of his shot info on his phone immediately after every swing. Good times.

A quick note on testing conditions. The averages shown below occurred at a range that has a TopTracer with heated bays where you hit outdoors during evening hours or when the temps drop. During the day, the grass range opens but you still have the capability of using the same TopTracer monitoring devices via your phone. It's not quite the same as a Trackman in Carlsbad with ProV1s...but it's consistent and should provide a fair review over this length of time. The data reflects ~18-20 different range sessions with temps ranging from the low 40's to low 70's, with under 50 degrees for 4 of the sessions, 50 to 65 degrees for 10, and above 65 degrees the rest. Warmer days saw ~+2-3 mph higher ballspeed than the averages shown, with colder days having the opposite effect.

Anyways, on to the update....

The GT3 is in the conversation of top 3 best fairway woods I've ever hit. It launches high but doesn't balloon, the forgiveness is above average, and it's versatile off a tee but doesn't sacrifice anything off the deck. My previous gamer (TSR2) is a fantastic fairway but it's amazing how much better Titleist made the GT lineup. The sound is better, the feel is better, and the performance is better. It is firmly in the bag at this point and the TSR2 will be used as a trade-in credit soon for the upcoming 250u driving iron. For anyone who hasn't hit one of the GT fairways, I can't recommend the lineup enough.

Driver

As mentioned during my last update, my struggle with the GT3 has been consistency and controlling the dreaded left knuckleball. 2 drives would be great, the next 3-4 would require a provisional. Basically 40% of the time, it did not work everytime ($1 to "Sex Panther"). Switching out the Riptide for a heavier CK Pro White has helped with the dispersion and feel issues. It's still not as forgiving as my previous gamer (Aerojet LS), which I attribute most of that due to my comfort level with the Cobra, but the distance gains as well as just my overall liking of it from a feel, sound, and look perspective kept me coming back to wanting to "work things out" with the GT3. In early April I was on the range with a fitting day occurring nearby, so I decided to try a G440 LST and came away impressed with it. Instead of buying one that afternoon, I waited a few days and went over to PGASS to see if the version I had tried would yield the same results. It did, so I picked one up. So for the last month I've been primarily testing the GT3 with the CK Pro shaft vs the G440 LST. After ~6 weeks of both drivers going against one another, my overall summary would be this: GT3 wins distance (both consistency and max), sound (by a wide margin), feel, and looks contests. The G440 only wins on consistency / confidence, but it's the driver that is currently in the bag for the round this afternoon and for the one on Sunday. I can step on any tee and feel like anything other than a complete idiotic attempt will still find the fairway. I can't say the same for the GT3.

Driver.jpg.5c47472f02f07b6752bdb30b720d5a6b.jpg

All that said, I actually think the GT3 might be the best driver on the market today, with the Ping and Callaway TD as close seconds. Maybe a higher lofted head with a different shaft would be the ticket for me, I don't know. But confidence is such a huge factor in this game and for whatever reason I have loads of it with the G440 and with the GT3 I'm just hoping the ball doesn't end up in someone's pool.

Great update @AUTIGER07 and appreciate the transparency. I’ve obviously chronicled my troubles with the driver as well, but chalk it up to bad swings vs tech.

Keep us posted on findings in the lab!

Quick weekend update - was able to get in 18 on Friday and 18 on Sunday and the GT3 driver is now officially out of the doghouse!

After working through a small grip tweak (its always that, right?) and adding in a small pause at the top of my backswing, I've effectively removed my left duck hook miss.  All-in-all, this driver is still performing as advertised, and I was able to most my best driving metrics year to date (longest drive was 285 and hit 13/14 fairways - all with the GT3 driver).

Given the great performance off the tee, I didn't have to hit my 3W or 7W much this weekend, but I'm still very happy with where I am with those clubs.

  • 4 weeks later...

Checking in on this thread - after a couple more rounds, I'm starting to build a lot more confidence in the driver.  Averaging 260 off the tee, but more importantly, minimizing the misses left & right.

As I stated previously, I was testing a cut down Diamana WB - the experiment was short lived as it did help minimize dispersion a bit, but I've been able to rein in the Ventus and get 10-15 more yards on average.

No further updates on the 3W / 7W combo - they are still performing admirably.

Another couple rounds - I'm starting to fall in love (again) with my GT3 driver.  While I still have the occasional mishit here and there (lets just say I get lazy and / or try to rush things), by and large, this thing is an absolute WEAPON off the tee.

No additional notes at this time, but did want to give another shoutout to @GolfWRX_Official for this opportunity.  Can't wait to continue testing these clubs over the rest of the golf season (and beyond)!
