Putting path feels

I think I remember seeing somewhere on here about tiger woods feeling a draw with his putter, but aside from that I couldn’t really find anything else with searches…

 

is it a thing to feel inside out draw with putting? I know my bad full swings I can get wipey trying to hold the club face which in fact makes things even worse where I push the club open or have to snap close it, I seem to have improved face control trying to draw my putts (feel), and wanted to double check if such a thing exists

If you cut across the putt 5 degrees with an open face, but then you  try to feel 5 degrees inside with a closed face……maybe it makes you straight…..or straighter….so everything is measured against current context.

 

Having said that, about 90 percent of the tour pros I measure have slight inside paths and generate tiny amounts of draw spin on their putts—usually 5-15 rpm draw spin.

That’s interesting… what launch monitor are you using? Is that enough side spin to make a line on the ball wobble?

Quintic. Probably not much line jiggle. Remember: it rounds per Minute, and the ground straightens it out in under 20 inches, and after that, everyone on earth has the same exact roll.

Had to do a little math: at 5 mph (typical initial ball speed of a 15-ft putt), 15 rpm of sidespin would result in the ball rotating 90° in 7.3 feet if friction from the putting surface is ignored. With a typical 10% (1.5 feet) of skid before the ball starts rolling, the ball will rotate sideways by about 18.5° before it’s rubbed off by forward roll, which seems like enough to cause a noticeable wobble in the line on a ball.

 

When looking for ball speeds, I found this article from Quintic that’s got some good info. Here’s what is says about side spin:

 

Side spin

Just like any other club in the bag, the ball can come off the putter face with hook-spin or cut-spin. Anything below +or- 10 rpm doesn't have an effect on where the ball ends up. 10-20 rpm is usually OK, but anything above that and you can see how the ball bounces and deviates from the intended path.

 

The task is then to see what is causing that sidespin: whether it's swing path, face alignment, or perhaps a faulty set-up or lie angle that makes the toe sit above the ground affecting the weight distribution at impact.

 

It's all very well saying that if a particular spin is consistent it doesn't matter. But if you've got a cut-spin stroke then you'll have to read a putt with a left-to-right break differently to one with a right-to-left break. Do you want that variability in your game?

Good stuff. If I remember, I’ll get my iPad out and video a putt with quintic and a stripe and see if I can get around 15 rpm, and we’ll see what it looks like just for fun. I’ll pm you the vid.

Face Angle is only really thing that matters in terms of start line ... it is 92% of the equation for ball flight with a putter

 

That being said, having a consistent swing path will lead to better centerness of hit 

 

Hit putts with just your right hand (for right handed golfer) and it will help train a better in to in path ... there is no such thing as straight back straight through 

 

If your path is too in to in ... hit putts with just your left hand and it will neutral out your path more
