Any GolfMetrics users? App update looks pretty great.

Recommended Posts

So I've been a GolfMetrics user for maybe 6 years or so.  I really like the app (old version) - while the UI wasn't great, it did every thing I wanted and needed.  I could also download CSV file to further refine the analysis in some areas.

The new version was released this week after some delay and I'm a little concerned about it.  It has enhanced the UI and added GPS functionality, but I'm not sure that's what most users wanted.  I can say for myself, I just want to quickly enter the shots manually instead of dragging a marker around a screen.  Also, the current version feels almost like a beta (if that) version.  For instance, once you enter a round, if you made a mistake, you can't edit any of the shots. You can't delete rounds either.  Both could be done on the old version.  Some of the stats shown in the old version are missing in the new.  Lastly, and this is critical for me, there is no way to download a CSV or other of the raw data like you used to be able to do.  I have other nits too but not worth sharing here.  I'm crossing my fingers that there will be some timely updates to correct these issues, but after all the delay I'm a bit surprised that this seems to be a step backwards.  My take so far - pretty face, less functionality.

Edit:  I misspoke about the not editing and deleting rounds.  It is somewhat hidden at the very bottom of a Scorecard function for each round once selected which is a different approach than was used in the old app and is only available on the mobile app, not the website data viewer.  So, the functionality isn't as limited as I implied above as far as managing rounds.  Still, I'm going to keep working with support to see how they addressing the other issues.

I agree that it doesn’t feel completely finished and can be a little clunky. I am excited for all the new functionality though. Specifically, the putting which is awesome and should give insights akin to the Stack Putting app. And now that we can set our shot targets and results, I’n hoping they allow us to see scatter plots for different distances relative to our selected target.

I think part of the problem is the somewhat spotty communication from the app developer.  In addition to the videos showing the new interface, an honest description of the functionality and expectations for condition at release would have helped.  Given the delay in release, I had expected this to more of a finished product but I think it's more of a work in process. The website looks like they are trying to replicate the app, but the website is obviously still being worked as none of the help features, tutorials, etc work at all.  I did dive into the mobile app help and they mention an detailed shot export like I mentioned above (CSV, XLSX), but that doesn't appear in the app at present.

In the old app, they had approach shot proximity vs reference, and putting 1-putt and 3-putt %'s vs the reference which don't appear in the app currently.  Anyway, this app (and the old one), certainly lets you dive into your stats in a very detailed way.

I'm not sure if you had the app previously, but if so, did you notice that when they converted the database, the dates of the rounds shifted backward one day?

I don’t remember on the rounds, sorry. Used it just now for 18 for the first time, definitely a little clunky. Also, do you feel like shot values have changed? I’m surprised to see a 280yd drive in the rough is only +0.01 vs a scratch… I could’ve sworn it used to be more.

Yes, they updated the reference tables for both Pro and Scratch and added more for 80...100 shooters.  You can go in and change it back to "Scratch (Legacy)" and you'll probably see that the SG is higher. I'm assuming they updated all the tables based on all the data collected over the years.

I sent their support email a bunch of comments, so we'll see what they say.

I see, thanks. which do you think is more “accurate” between scratch and legacy?

I’m going to try and write down bugs I run into, because there were a few.

I bounce around both sides of 0, and I've always thought the Legacy Scratch was kind of generous.  I am going to assume the new Scratch is based on many more rounds and is therefore more accurate.  It would be helpful if they described how they come up with the updated tables.

I used the new app today for the first time and I would say that data entry easily takes at least twice as long as with the old app.  The only use case where I could see it being decent would be if you used the GPS location and entered it on the phone for each shot individually which I don't think many people would do.  Personally, I enter the data in between holes.  They have said the will release an update that will enable full manual entry like the old app which I think will help a lot.

They need to allow the non-GPS, no-map data entry like the old app and restore all the stats from the old app. Even then, I'm not sure I'd re-up my subscription but in its current form this is almost worthless IMO. Looks like a very early beta, basically a placeholder for the real app they have planned. I'd put the odds at 50/50 (maybe) that they ever drag this around to a fully usable replacement for the old system.

Can't say I disagree with anything here.  It kind of reminds me of a password manager called mSecure which one of it's notable features that attracted users was wifi sync where your data was synced between devices and not to the cloud which was becoming more popular.  In one major update, they decided to remove wifi sync and go exclusively cloud and the push back was pretty severe and they lost users (including me).  They eventually caved and restored the feature but the damage had been done.  In this case, there's not a ton of alternatives but there are some.  Of course, they are upping the price quite a bit on the next renewal which is ironic given the step backwards the app presents so far.

I did send a list of concerns (including all those you mentioned) to their support line a few days ago but haven't heard anything back.  It seems the app developer is in Sweden and I'm not sure what kind of arrangement Mark Brodie made with them so I have no idea the sense of urgency they are working with.  If tour pros and coaches are indeed using this app, I can't imagine they would be overly pleased at this point.

Yes, I'm very disappointed. Ive been using Golfmetrics for several years, but am finding the new app virtually unusable.

I agree with the comments above. Looks like the price has increased too (I think 🤷‍♂️).

I’m close to asking for a pro-rata refund on my remaining sub.

What are the putting stats improvements? I can’t see them.

I’m looking at different apps now. Have come with:

- Drawmorecircles

- Arccos app

- Roundabout

- SwingU Pro

- Bebrassie

- Decade.

Any experience / opinions?

I don't have any experience with any of the apps listed but would also suggest looking at 18Birdies and GolfPad, which I think is available on both Android and Apple.  I have used GolfPad primarily as a GPS app, but it does have shot tracking both manually and automatic (with GolfPad Tags).  I have messed with the manual shot tracking and it's similar to the new Golfmetrics app, but easier especially if you use a watch to signify shots.

Personally, I was using the old Golfmetrics app along with the CSV export, so I've resorted to using a spreadsheet on my phone to record strokes similar to the way the old app worked.

I'm still holding out hope that they get this app back on track, but with getting pelted with bad reviews on the Apple and Google Play stores which have indicated that some people have completely lost their database, I have a feeling they are in scramble mode.  I've received no response so far to my "issues" lists, but didn't 100% expect one.

$134/yr now

The previous version of Golfmetrics was $69/yr.

I liked the old version. Simple to use. Fair price.

I don't imagine sticking with the new one even if they get all the bugs out.

Just read the 'old manual entry' is coming back in October with a update to the app. No mention of price options if you scale back to old version. Can't imagine that would happen.

I don't think they will release a version of the app that replicates the older app(although I think they should).  It sounds like they will add a mode to the new app so they data can be entered in a similar way as we did before.  The latest email was an entertaining read as they really put a positive spin on everything even with all the 1 star reviews in both app stores and poor reception by users in golf forums.  I'm sure they've heard similar feedback from users.   A little humility would go at least some way to smooth over the effects of an app basically turned unusable due to an upgrade.

Unusable for me since they don't have my home course mapped, sent an email and got no response.

Is there an alternative app/website which replicates the Strokes Gained data? I just want to enter the rounds at home, not on the course as I go. Don't need any bells and whistles, just simple data entry!

The Golf Metrics developer has said that this is coming soon (would expect in next month) to the app.

I just found an app called Golfity that does pretty much what the old legacy Golfmetrics app did.  Very easy data entry and gives plenty of strokes gained data and app is free.  They have a Pro version for ~$50/year (which is half the cost of Golfmetrics now), but you may be happy with the free version.  The developer is very responsive and has made a few improvements based on my comments.   They even mentioned that they can import  the Golfmetrics CSV export so you can keep your data.  I'm now using this to record my rounds.

Hi, I'm the founder of golfity, thanks for your nice comments @jammer13!

Our app is designed for manual entry of your scores, either on the course or after it, on your phone or on the web. A good part of the app can be used for free, although we do ask for payment for some of the Pro features (we'd like to at least cover our costs).

We have imported the Golfmetrics scores for several users, using a CSV export, we can do that for you also.

We are constantly updating the app (we upload a new version almost every week) and we love hearing from our users, we like to be responsive to our users' suggestions.

Thanks!!

Hi kiani

I've just downloaded the app and it looks great......perfect replacement for the old Golfmetrics!

One question, how can I record an incomplete hole where I've picked up? I couldn't see anything obvious.

Decided to give Golfmetrics one last try as they said the old data entry option is back.

Has anyone had success?

I choose 'no map'. Asks me to create a course but I can't as 'play' button greyed out.

At this point, feel like I'm entitled to a refund. 🙂

On an upside, tried a few rounds with Golfity.

Very nice app. Does everything Golfmetrics did but slick screens and data presenation.

Still needs ability to filter by rounds, date, course, etc but feels like that is in the works.

I tried their new input system and I was able to start a round.  The Play button on my app is not greyed out, I just tried it again.   Maybe reinstall the app?

The new input system is much improved,  I will say that.  Still, given the cost and they still don't have the stats like the old version (and still don't have the CSV export which is my pet peeve), I'm probably going to stick with Golfity.

The update is terrible. It was an excellent app that I was happy to pay for. I’ve stopped using it now.

Both in-round and post round data entry are clunky and (on course) get in the way. If only they gave the option of keeping the old version - they didn’t.

So disappointed. Golfmetrics was incredibly helpful in developing my game.

Reaching out to Golfmetrics is an effort in futility......I've reached out numerous times on numerous platforms and they never respond to any message.

It's actually quite embarrassing how they have strung people along with the "New App" since last January. It was delayed by at least 6 months and it's virtually unusable. You would think the pioneer on Strokes Gained could get their sh$t together and not just take our money and ignore us.

I for one will be moving in a different direction once the golf season starts in April.

For sure.

Funny thing is I just received a response from an email I sent in October.  I had had asked about CSV export,  which was available in the previous version.  They said it is on their "roadmap".

It's like they are almost trying lose all their users.  Really strange.

Still waiting for a response to 4 emails I've sent asking them to add my home course.  I guess they just want to collect money and not offer any support.  The old app was much better, at least I could use it.

I looked at Drawmorecircles and Decade. These are targeting top juniors, college players or better. As an 18 handicap, I'd rather be measuring shots gained and such against my own peer group and then a 15, 10 etc.  Not Scratch or PGA pro.

They are just numbers at the end of the day, but it's a lot more motivating to try and hit a reachable target than an impossible one. e.g, as an 18 getting to a 15 and then striving to a 10 is possible.  Getting to a 0? Never gonna happen.
